Sotirio Secures 1st WSW Win In 2019

@Wendy,

Teach, you were wondering why MB publicly had a go at the team after the Jets game. He answered that question in the press conference last night.

https://www.a-league.com.au/video/full-press-conference-markus-babbel-15

Thanks mate!

But nothing I heard him say there makes me want to retract my earlier thoughts or comments.

He was more or less saying (from how I interpreted his words) that the team was shattered after the last game (as of course, they would have been, even  WITHOUT his demoralising words - stating that they wouldn't care) ...."their heads had dropped" ...and he made it sound like they actually wanted to give up for the rest of the season.

THAT'S exactly what I would have thought their reaction would have been.

And THEN, he said, they TALKED....numerous times THEY SAT DOWN AND TALKED...and he helped the players to understand why he did what he did.

It sounds to me that by talking to them, they built bridges....after a gulf has developed between him and the players....which is hardly surprising.

And that's plainly what he needs to do more.

Not sure that many here would have seen last night's performance as that praiseworthy really.....but he complimented and praised his team...said he was proud of them, for their "discipline and structure" etc etc.

And THAT'S what the manager needs to do  - to show belief in his players (and not only after a win)...rather than DISbelief at how bad they are - which is what he did the previous week.

Anyway...I doubt I'm on the same page as most of you here on this issue, but if he is learning about how to get the best from his (A League level) players....that's a step in the right direction for us all really.

:):)

What did Vedran do that everyone was talking about? Couldn’t make the game last night

Played proper.

When in doubt put the out.

Didn't do anything stupid

the ball was running out of play while bobbling a bit, so Vedran being Vedran, he decided to do step overs before it went out for a goal kick

Maybe they were doing that...or maybe they weren't just throwing their boys under a bus (and copping criticism for doing so).

It will be interesting to see whether Babbel takes the more supportive approach when the team doesn't win in the future...or whether he goes down the same path as after the Jets game (and to a lesser extent after numerous other games) and slaps his players down publicly.

I'm hoping for the former.

I think we are overstating the effects of his press conferences. Hammil has had 3 different managers 4 if you include fox and he still makes exactly the same stupid mistakes he always has. Llorente still stands of his man, Vedran has always had brain explosions etc

He also then gave a sarcastic clap to the crowd when he was applauded for letting a ball go. He’s really not helping himself.

All he needs to do is shut up, and play footy the crowd will come back round soon enough

as for the view that somehow the crowd abuse is worse due to Babbel.

We have always had players that our crowd has got on the back off. Even when redmayne has a decent game every goal was his fault and the nobhead who used to sit behind us would constantly guve the King **** even be scored. Yep it’s worse at the moment but that’s simply because we are losing, weirdly people are happier when we win

thinking about it the good thing about our crowd falling away is that the nobheads near of us who spoke loudly in the mistaken belief that they were some sort of clever Sam, Ed and Santo football comedians, rather than a pair of tedious bellends haven’t been seen or heard this year

Rather play at Spotless than ANZ. We have lost only two games there.

Sarcastic cheers should be reserved for opposition players, it's demoralising. Anyone that does it to our own is a bit dumb.

It’s almost tragic how rubbish the view is from spotless because the choice and quality of the food outlets and bars are unbelievable.

Vedran has always been a bit of a tool let’s be honest. He’s been saved by the fact that he hasn’t played too badly up to this point

Whether Babbel highlights the positive or states the obvious doesn't change what is an iota. Inept players don't come good because a coach loves them back to life with kind words. I honestly hope we get the wooden spoon so we can have first draft pick next season.

I don't get why Spotless is immune from the "GEMA GROUP OWNS EVERYTHING" that seems to infest every other stadium in the country. Every other stadium I've been to has the same old hat, generic garbage at every single concession stand just like the old Parramatta. The only place that seems close to what Spotless had, is that the SFS main stand has a few different fast food shops in it.

It's not going to be any different at the new stadium I imagine.

They deserved it. The performance they put in against the Jets was disgusting. Babbel could've had them park the bus and we would've lost by just as many. This isn't preschool, they are grown men who should be able to be judged as such.

For the most part I don't think that the terrible performances are due to a lack of confidence but more due to lack of care amongst the older players. The younger players have generally stood up and shown great confidence given the challenge that's confronted them.

Oh and good on Roly. He's been a shining light in an otherwise dire season.

Yes they deserved it.....loud and clear...in the dressing room. ;)

What's clear to me in this debate...with voices like yours, BoyfromTheWest, DU, (my friend) Wanderboy, and others, is that there is a very fundamental difference in how we see leadership, and how leaders motivate those they guide.

I don't think either side is going to change their views....and that's OK.

I think the problem is they've been hearing it in the dressing room but not responded.

On the difference of opinion I totally agree. Im just happy to be able to discuss these issues with people who care as much as I do about our team.

You would think that allowing various franchises to open within a stadium would provide a decent revenue stream from the licensing fees alone

I don't have a problem with Vedrans reaction. We know he's a smartass, always has been. He's doing his best, just terribly out of form.

If people are gonna be smartasses to him, I'm happy he gave it back. Having said that, I didn't see an issue with his reaction. If it was me I would've delivered a big 'up yours'

I agree, I really don't think he did much wrong. I also thought he was in control and commanded the defence quite well.

On holiday so watched the game on TV

There was a beautiful camera shot after Sotirio scored the second: Babbel was smiling - a genuine, happy smile. It zoomed out and then you could see him genuinely happy for the team while Sotirio and the others were celebrating in the foreground.

Babbel may slag them in public when they lose but I do believe him when he says he likes the team.

Hopefully this is the catalyst for the rest of our season
