Last ANZ Derby Drawn

Recommended Posts

The last Sydney Derby of the Wanderers nomadic three year existence away from Parramatta ended in a 1-1 draw with a goal in each half.

In front of a 21,000 strong crowd, Sydney FC opened the scoring 7 minutes in. When Alexander Baumjohann and Keanu Baccus made a mess of possession in midfield, Anthony Caceres released Alex Brosque who fired a low left footed shot from the edge of the area past Vedran Janjetovic.

With the Wanderers looking the better of the two sides after half-time, the Wanderers equalised in the 57th minute. Baumjohann stepped up to take a free kick just outside the edge of the area after a Brandon O'Neill foul. Off a short run he blasted at the parted wall and it took a deflection off Adam LeFondre and beat Andrew Redmayne in goal.

Around the hour mark Baumjohann found Oriol Riera with a looping cross, the marquee striker rose for an uncontested header from point blank range but only nodded the ball onto the base of the post and away from goal.

Deep into stoppage time Giancarlo Gallifuoco delivered an outstanding cross into the middle of the area for Abraham Majok but the striker's touch took the ball over the bar, and he may have been offside in any case. The final action came from LeFondre as he curled a wonderful strike towards the top far corner only to have it tipped around the post by Janjetovic. The draw means that Perth Glory have one hand on the Premiers plate going into their match against Newcastle tomorrow,

The Wanderers play Central Coast Mariners on Saturday 20 April in Gosford.

Babel...trying to justify subbing ABJ off....wasn't convincing.

I thought the “lack of conviction” was just his command of the English language.

ABJ was great, and Bridgey’s touch was s bit rusty, but I thought Bridge showed how poor the vision our players is. He got into great spots about 5 or 6 times and they just don’t see the pass.

You know.......I think considering the quality of the team we have this year, maybe Babbel has pulled them together ok.....a bit of tweaking with some quality players and maybe Babbel can do something next season.

Totally agree.

We were the better team - granted they were backing up - and our team is full of kids and bit part players with a couple of good uns. Get some quality in there and we’ll be amongst it again.

Galifuocco and Duke were great tonight. If Galifuocco played every game like that, he'd be a mainstay. Show us 3 games of that, please.

Bloody hell Baumjohann is unfit. By the 55th minute he was barely getting out of the defensive line after set pieces and kept lagging behind the ball on brake. at 32 he aint getting any fitter. Bye Bye

.Yep.Best effort so far. Duke is a machine.

Fmd what's with all the media love fest of ABJ..

Yes, he creates chances but he doesn't score and is injury prone.

He's always cooked after 60min, and lazy on defence.

In terms of our track record in recruiting a #9.. We should offer Ori a contract next season..

Unless Lederer opens up his wallet for a Torres/Drogba/Zlatanesque 30+ year old striker. We'll recruit another Piovacarri.

Riera is a safe signing.

Our midfield both defensively and on the attack was at time a fooking shambles for almost the entire first half. The lack of controlled possession, the miscommunication and miss-hit passes, the lack of energy and situational awareness was shocking. Time and time again the lads were caught napping or out-hustled by a smurf unit that looked far more fit, focused, passionate.

Then, whilst they didn't rectify every mistake and every lackadaisical run or pass, they did lift enough to make the match far more even. We probably had the better of ESFC for maybe 5-10 mins in the first half and most of the second. We did look far more fragile than we needed to be, however if there was going to be a winner it probably should've been us. Biscuits obviously killed a sitter, and he is so frustrating because of his form (up and down like a whore's panties) . Vedran had his usual mixed bag of shite & amazeballs, and as has been said already Duke was always on the job.

Aside from our win against the smurfs back in 2016/17 tonight was probably the best derby we've had at the Olympic Stadium. Now we have only one more t go then we can spend at least 2 more seasons laughing at those karnts in the east as they whinge and whine about being Alan Jones' buggered boys.

Well we started off dodgy, couple of yellows and soft goal, could VJ got a hand to it? going by the last minute save YES he could have !

But we kind of ground our way back into it and half time came, and the general consensus at the ground we were in it, keep grinding away, then they came out hard at us in the opening minutes and hit the post, bit of a wake up call, couple of typical derby handbags and then the crowd started believing.

Shouted so much my voice has gone, i don't know how the RBB do it all game long - kudos.

But really enjoyed the last 20 mins was sure we were going to win it, biscuit hitting the bloody post Jesus he wasn't going to get a better chance than that all night!, Roly and Majok at the end and VJ pulling one off at the death, came away entertained and hopeful for next season, but at the same time gutted, we were in with a great shout of finally beating them tonight and let it slip, but even so Cove & RBB going for it, Easter fireworks and 22,000 crowd best atmosphere all season there tonight, as i say came away entertained and a bit of a buzz at the end of a football match, good night.

You'd think people who've watched football for 30+ years wouldn't be so impressed by a mediocre non-tracking back attacking mid who keeps giving the ball away.

The panel on foxsports and the media interviewing babble always ask why ABJ keeps getting subbed and how he's creating chances..

But you're right! They fail to see his defensive liability all they see is his creativity that rarely gets converted.

WSW wanted to hurt the Smurfs, and they did just that. The Smurf machine Corica inherited from Arnie is hard to beat. They have one chance and score, and then grind out results.

Really don't know what to make of Llorente. The way he currently plays he is almost an asset.

Riera had to bury that chance.

Mahazi and GG proved that they are HAL-grade players.

Treejack lacks intensity over 90 minutes. There's at least one player on the market MB worked with who can do as well as ABJ in that position, but for an entire game.

That’s one of the best nights in the RBB for a while. Was rocking! I enjoy the smaller congregation cause everyone actually sings.

Is there any reason why Eye of the Tiger was blaring loudly during the moments applause for the power chair lads who passed away? Seemed incredibly insensitive and I thought completely spoilt the moment...

Also, can someone take the mic off that wanker who just screams every 30 seconds before the game... then he started asking if there were any Sydney fans ‘in the house’. STFU mate

Treejack was hacked mercilessly by the Smurfs and Evans did nothing about it.

Yet again, Brosque doesn't get a card for dissent. The A-league referees make it hard for the grassroots refs when they fail to show that they enforce the laws of the Game. Didn't see the elbow on Roly but in most circumstances an an elbow yo the head is a yellow card. Plus the danger two-footed tackle in the second half should have red.

But the Smurfs are the darlings of the FFA, what else should I expect.
