Squad Development 2019/20 Part 1

Okazaki - 100 odd BL games and 100 odd PL games. That should fix it. MB knows him from the BL. This would put the mind of those at rest who thought of RoD as too old and too small.

Ribery won't come because we get him, but because he wants to. Stadium, training facility, standard of the league - all that will mean very little. What matters most is what the priorities of the Ribery family are. The kids lived most of their lives in Munich - Qatar and UAE with their restrictions would come as a shock.

MB is genuinely impressed by the lifestyle in Sydney, he loves it here. If he explains to Ribery family that there is a thing called the toaster, that you can watch the fireworks from there, that you can walk up to the Manly Ferry, and head over to the beach in 20 minutes, that should make an impression on the kids.

Bayern is a family club at heart. MB has been saying in the German media that he works with "top guys" at WSW. This will matter to Ribery who is used to the club having his back (and at times he needed it too!).

It seems impossible that he'd join WSW, he just seem too big. But I thought the same about Babbel. If we ever had a chance to score a really big name, then this is it. So let's just see what happens.

While all this Ribery and Okazaki talk is exciting, I'm keen to start hearing rumours of defenders we're looking at.

Unnecessary luxuries.

If we sign a couple of decent attacking options together with Duke & Yeboah, we may even get away with Hamill & Elrich as squaddies

We have to wait until next week, that's when he will visit the training centre, also where he and his family will be staying.

When does Marcus go on his European vacation?  This might realistically be when we could expect some developments to take place.

By the way, does anyone know the German term for gaffer/manager?

He is already there talking to players.

Surely a Sunday arvo with some stynes, pork knuckle and the kids running around barefoot at the Concordia club near Tempe station should seal this deal.

The salary cap is going up by $137k for next year apparently once the new CBA is confirmed. The $200k loyalty cap exemption might be removed as well (funny how that happens the moment SFC & MVFC start retiring the players that they were using them on). No idea if the homegrown $200k for U23 players is going away as well or not.

Any word on an increase in foreign players?

I'm not sure if that even comes under the CBA. It could simply be part of the regulations of the league as decided by the FFA.

It does. The number of foreign players per team was agreed between the PFA, clubs and FFA in the CBA to ensure that Australian footballers form the majority of each team.

Is that in addition to the FFA decision/policy on foreign player numbers? With the CBA effectively just imposing a maximum within which the FFA can make changes?

I think a raid on  the Adelaide United squad is justified. Don't worry whether they're under contract or not.

Start with Paul Izzo, Isaias and continue from there.

He looked very unfortunate against Perth last night. He could/should (?) have saved the first and third goal. Which is the reason why Perth in the final, and Adelaide isn't.

I think you're being a bit harsh on Izzo as far as the third goal is concerned.  He's a better, steadier option than Vedran without a doubt, which is what we need.

There's also plenty of good mentality among their players as well which has been missing at the Wanderers.

Based on this season's performance, you'd be hard pressed to find a No 1 GK who is less steady than Vedran. Izzo would probably be an upgrade, but that's not enough. The question is if he is a GK who stands as tall (as Ante did), and wins you the big and tight games. Based on last night, the answer is "no". A better GK would have saved at least one of the three goals Adelaide conceded.
