mack
The Western Sydney Wanderers have played a cracking second half to take a magnificent 2-1 win against Melbourne Victory tonight. The Wanderers opened the scoring with a 25 yard wonderstrike from Keanu Baccus, doubled their lead with a wonderful long range effort from Alex Meier and held on for the win after Victory pulled a goal back with a Ola Toivonen penalty. Western Sydney had the best of the first half despite going into the break level. The home side had the first major chance of the game in the 20th minute as Andrew Nabbout broke down the right hand flank, managed to get enough room to fire in a shot that Daniel Wilmering deflected towards the near post requiring a good save from Daniel Lopar to knock it out for a corner. There was a touch of controversy midway through the half, Alex King pulling up the Victory defence for an illegal challenge just outside the area, blowing his whistle right as Alex Meier turned and unleashed a volley from 20 yards out that had Lawrence Thomas beaten completely, banging off the crossbar and into the goal, ruled out because the referee hadn't played advantage. The game sparked into life in the second half, shortly after the break neat interplay from the Wanderers gave Sullivan a chance to chip a ball over the Victory defence for Mo Adam who played a cut-back in the direction the ball had come from for a charging Baccus and the midfielder fired in a first time missile past the full length dive of Thomas in the Victory goal. The curling strike found the top corner and he wheeled away in a deserved celebration. Alex Meier capitalised on the excellent work of Mitch Duke who forced a massive error between Thomas & fullback Roux, they nearly collided and Thomas' failed clearance bobbled to Meier, 25 yards out from goal with no-one but a solitary outfielder on the line to beat, Meier's class showed as he lobbed Thomas and placed it well enough to get past Donachie on the line. Melbourne came back fighting despite being two down and they drew level after receiving a lucky penalty for a Dylan McGowan handball as he tried to challenge for a header. Toivonen calmly slotted the well struck penalty past Lopar despite his dive going the right way. Melbourne hammered and pressed for an equaliser until the dying seconds but they couldn't get past the stout Wanderers defence. The win was the first time in the A-League that the Wanderers had picked up 6 points from the first 2 games and it puts them three clear at the top of the table pending the other games in the round. The Wanderers next game is against Sydney FC at the Western Sydney Stadium at 7:30PM on Saturday October 26. View full article Paul01, sonar, HillsWanderer and 10 others 13 Link to comment

Popular Post THEWANDERERSPOST
I LOVE THIS CLUB! What a win boys, really held out and fought to the end. Credit to Sullivan, imo he proved many people wrong today. Meier was class. And lets just say Baccus only scores bangers and is by far the better Baccus, its facts. First win away against Victory in ages, this one will be cherished for a long time I reckon. Bring on SFC and C'mon you Wanderers Carns, EmMac, Zelinsky and 13 others 16 Link to comment

echidna
Great goals by Baccus and Meier and a most spirited performance. Schwegler's control, passing and tigerish tackling and general coordination of play were excellent. While there were occasional mistakes, it was a terrific away win. The Derby should sell out in the next 48 hours. There is every likelihood that it will be played between teams 1 and 2 on the table! COYW! Prydzopolis, alexd, wendybr and 6 others 9 Link to comment

Matto97
6 long years to beat them in their own backyard, feels so sweet. Butthole was clenched the entire last 20 mins as it was just wave after wave off attack but the boys were incredible with the last ditch defence and workrate. Mcgowan still worries me, unlucky with the penalty but shouldn't be flailing his arms in the box like that then comes rushing out of the defensive line later on and gets beaten like a traffic cone, he was pretty good besides that but I hope he gets better as Markus has entrusted him with the vice captaincy and I think captains should lead by example. Other then that everyone else played a blinder and can't wait for the smurfs next week. First time since 2015/16 I feel like we can beat them. Popular Post ManfredSchaefer
So many positives to take away from this win, and we are definitely a far different beast than we were at any time in our three seasons in the SOP wilderness. Babbel got the tactical structures & starting XI spot on with no real reason to second guess him. Considering the limitations he was under vis-a-vis injured players and those who are underdone it was about as good as it gets. As I said in the earlier thread, starting Mo & Meier was very astute, and everyone else did their job for the entire 90+ minutes. Perhaps the best aspect of tonight is we saw a squad on the pitch that can and will get better, thanks in no small part to the benefits accrued through some great signings and the presence of a significant cadre of young tyros. When you have Lopar at the back Schwegler in the mids & Meier way up front there is a solid, experienced spine that is backed up with local lads like Dukey, Georgievski, Jurman and McGowan who can all put in the hard yards. The kids like Baccus, Wilmering, Sullivan and Mo are coming on in leaps and bounds, and with Tass, Cordier, Grozos etc to push for places the squad has depth and breadth. With no injuries and all the 'underdone' players bar Yeboah getting time on the pitch there are the bennies of more match fitness work for all, and you would like to think that this can only improve. Defensively we were stretched at times, but generally speaking we had the answers. If I was to point at one worry it'd have to be McGowan. His handball was a pen, as much as we'd like to say it wasn't, and he was a little at sea at times, especially against Kamsoba (who is a real talent). The best thing is when we are stretched or look vulnerable Lopar is there to do everything that Vedran can only dream of. The win must also do wonders for the mentality of the squad, and they should have every reason to feel that they can do the smurfs next week. One thing is for sure...beating Victory tonight will give our home support a huge push. One of the best wins the club has ever had, and almost certainly the best since we left ye olde Wanderland. But did you not notice how hard we fought in defence, and how we still tried to play our game when we had possession? I don't think it's a worry at all. Tonight's performance, after what we showed last week, was a vast improvement. We have players still gelling with the team. We have players still building their fitness. We have players who haven't even started yet, either from the lineup or the bench. And, then there is double dot Muller still to come in. We are seriously going to give this league a shake this season. Our major strength this season is going to be the kids, who, last year, when Marcus arrived, he had no time for and complained incessantly about how many of them he had to use. In the meantime, he has raised their quality to a more than credible level. FFS, who would have thought an 18 y o Wilmering would be performing to this level so quickly this season? Not to mention the others. We have an amazing amount of experience and quality at the high end of the squad. We have a quality 2nd squad of depth with the youth. The east would crave to have our depth. Smoggy, Horus, ptwsw and 10 others 13 Link to comment
