Actually I got it wrong. We could be 6 points behind Melbourne City. We could be 3 points behind even if we win next week.

We have a bye and our 2nd hardest game of the season coming up. SFC also have a bye. City have Wellington today, then the Mariners then the Roar. They could be on 16 points.

And then they play us the week before their bye.

Lol...

But I honestly don't see the need for people to repress expression of what they think/feel about where we're at.

If people can't say what they think/feel here...well, where can they?

Yeah there were times he had it and was looking to play it on to someone and I was thinking “here we go!” but the pass just went astray or a defender got a toe in or something.

But his insertion in the team also seems to have stagnated Duke and Yeboah a bit. Like they are uncertain how to move around a big guy up front. Probably not used to playing with one. And it IS more difficult. If you have a 9 who will come into channels, then other players can move into the spaces he leaves. If not, the options for the wide guys are lessened. Duke in particular suits drifting in to the striker role and then back out again.

It seems we also really need a central midfielder (or two) who is naturally attacking. Some players will play the ball in to a forward and automatically look to make a run beyond, some instinctively play it in and sit. We definitely need a Muller who clearly has an attacking mentality. Baccus and Schwegler don’t, and Grozos might as well not have been on the park yesterday. I think he was hiding a bit.

And yeah Roar stifled us well. We were trying to break them down but constantly finding the wrong option.

BUT at the same time if the big guy’s main job is to finish then he needs to do better than the soft headers and scuffed shots that we have been getting.

good post.

once you have a player like AM you are committing to playing around him. lots of the best passing teams have a big guy in the middle and he isn't there as a target man - he is there as a means to hold possession to give others time to move into space. Dino isn't 5% of the player that AM is but he fulfilled a similar role. get the ball to feet - hold the big centre back on his back to allow time for others to move into space. I'd like to see him drop a bit deeper and be more involved in the build up a bit more and do this but grozos was in this space and very static so AM basically stood next to their centreback and watched the game. Not really what you want from your marquee striker.

In another of your posts btron you said that atm we are a tough gutsy team but lacking an identity in our attacking approach (or words to that effect - am heavily paraphrasing). I would agree with this assessment. We have established a sound defensive structure + a good keeper which means we shouldn't give up many goals which will keep us in most games - need to sort out how we want to play and how the pieces fit together. am hopeful that muller will be the answer to a lot of these questions. in the meantime we will need to keep grinding out results like this.

mourinho's chelsea won a heap of silverware using a pretty similar formula. staunch defence, great keeper, big striker, a flair player and a bit of pace around him = lots of 1-0's, pretty unappealing football at times but plenty of trophies.

Oh god no

The problem I always had with Mourinho's Chelsea is that they shouldn't have needed to play like that when they could afford all the best attacking players in the world!

I guess in a salary cap league it is more understandable. But I hope not.

TLDR

I bet there's a few glass half empty viewpoints amongst the post game offerings in here thus far.

Irrespective of how we rate the individual performances of our players yesterday, I wouldn't put too much energy into analysing the performance in isolation as we were coming off an emotional Derby win & most of the squad were flat or lacking game time in recent months.

The conditions didn't lend themselves to good football yesterday & our front four in particular were managing training loads or had niggles & we're all underdone. We lacked movement & failed to create space for our playmakers in the final 3rd. When Muller came on he provided the penetration that had been lacking. He's quality

Btw, it was still hot & humid a 10am this morning when our NYL put 5 past Canberra at our academy fields this morning. Adam with a hatrick within 30 mins.

Plenty of our AL youngsters got 70+ minutes. Good hitout for a few lads who have been training a lot, but, not playing many games

Lineup looks like 3-4-1-2 Trew-Adam Vasiliou Cordier-Jordan-Sawalha-Russell Al Taay-Percevski-Pelekanos Suman

Would have loved Adam to come on against the Roar.

Looked at the NYL draw, our boys have bye in Round 1

  1. I was really doubting McGowan during pre-season but, since shifting to a back four, he has been terrific in defence as well has his distribution.

  2. Any word on Schwegler's injury?

  3. It was hot and humid.... that is a real advantage for a team like Brisbane who are acclimatised to it.

Jurman and Schwegler aren't likely to play next week. Schwegler seems to have the worse injury, hopefully he'll be better after our bye.

They have another trial v's a local NPL2 opponent next Sat morning, so for those not travelling to Geelong, it's an opportunity to get their WSW fix by watching our 2002's & later play against u20's, whom they may play against during the 2020 NPL2 season.

It is the A League they have to get over CCM and Nix yet.   I challenge anyone who before the season started would not have been happy with 10 points looking at our first 4 rounds.

Quoted from the FBTL site:

Quote

The former Newcastle Jets man says there is a real team spirit in the dressing room where everyone puts a shift in on both ends of the pitch, best seen by the blocked shots of Kwame Yeboah and Alexander Meier.

“That’s a desire to not lose, that’s a perfect formula for any team," he said. "If you can’t score at least you can defend well and the fact that Yeboah blocked a shot was pretty much going in and he’s a winger, and Meier as well.

Where last we didn't see that at all last season, defense, resilience and a fighting attitude.

I believe we will get there soon, we seen glimpses against Victory.

Seem to recall a club from western Sydney winning the ACL with that kind of attitude.

Course people were bitching about how they capitulated against Ulsan Hyundai in the rain and pyro back then too...

To suggest that the post-game discussion turned into a washer women convention would be an insult to all washer women.

Top of the table, unbeaten, two clean sheets despite injury worries, best start into the season in our history, all five import and two marquee spots filled - but that is not enough.

MB said in the presser that football is not a "Wunschkonzert", meaning a "request show" - that's something people don't seem to compute. Thank goodness that we don't have an ownership model where the members actually have a say. These experts would have the club sunk in now time.

I thought "our" referee was sh!t, Wellington were absolutely robbed.

Back on subject, it would be awesome to have our top 11 on the field all at the one time but as one comes in another goes out.

But tread carefully if you are going to say something to him.

Good luck!

Before the derby I was waiting for my son who was on that inflatable football thing they have set up on the basketball court behind the east stand. Down from me was an Asian lady with a young toddler in a push chair and I think might have been waiting for an older kid also. Near her was a guy stood having a cigarette, no WSW or ESFC colours, but with a group of other blokes, might have been waiting for kids also.

I was watching my son really, I did smell the ciggie smoke and wasn't really looking when I heard the lady approach the man and say "would you mind moving further down that way with your cigarette", the response was disgusting and made me look. He went right up to her face and said "why don't you mind your own ******* business you ******* ****, get ****ed", what a low life. I would have stepped in, he backed off and walked around to the other end of the game things, he caught me giving him the eye, he kept on walking thankfully. I smiled at the lady and asked if she was ok, she seemed ok and thanked me anyway for asking....

******* scum..

That reminds me of the night I was at the Leeds match. My son and I were down in that area as well. We were doing a lap of the stadium, to try and soak up some of the atmosphere of our first game back at the stadium as we had some time to kill.

We were walking beside 3 lads wearing Leeds gear. One of them decided to clear his throat and then dropped a massive golly on the pavers right in front of where we were walking. As you said - ******* scum.

Young Wanderboy was astounded, but found it funny that they couldn't give a ****. Of course, no one from Teeside or Tyneside would ever do such a thing!

Indeed....mind attending football since 1985 and never seen a women given some hassle like that...some inappropriate chants  that would be out of place now yes...but not that kind of reaction, lowest of the low.

Sorry Burgerman this is not just aimed at you, but there is a constant theme of "we are top of the table, what more do people want?" going round.

If that is the case we might as well close down the forum, just post the table each week!

Nothing is truer in sport than the fact that you can't stand still. You stop to admire your handiwork, you are going backwards. People are just pointing out the things we need to improve else we will get overtaken.

The coach himself, in three of the four games, has said we did not play well.

Good post.

From what I've read, there has generally been reasonably constructive criticism. And, IMO it has been warranted. We might well be top of the table (well not now anyway) but we have ridden our luck big time. Good luck to us. It's been a great ride to win games that we would normally lose. It has been astounding that we remain undefeated after 4 rounds. There wouldn't be ONE Wanderers fan who would be unhappy with our position on the table.

But, if posters feel the need to elaborate on certain aspects of our game that they are disappointed with, they should be able to do so freely without the consequence of personal abuse. They are, just opinions after all. As you said, Babbel has said 3 weeks out of 4 that we did not play well, and there needs to be improvement and he believes we will. This forum gives us all the opportunity to discuss those issues that we see may need improvement, and share our opinions on how this may come about. Really, it's nothing more than that. Yes some will disagree with others. Big deal.

It's when the personal abuse starts flowing that it descends into chaos. It's MY opinion that those that personally abuse others are intolerant of others opinions, they aren't willing to rationally discuss other's opinions and become defensive and therefore go down the line of abuse, which ultimately weakens their own arguments.

Fair dinkum, I've seen the way the Parra LU forum has behaved over the last decade or so with the Eels lack of success. I'd hate for this forum, which is generally humorous, friendly and intelligent, to descend into that.
