Time To Go Babbel After 2-0 Loss To Nix

Recommended Posts

The tenure of Wanderers coach Markus Babbel must come to an end after another dismal loss, this time to Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand this afternoon.

The big news from Wellington was the dropping of Wanderers marquee striker Alex Meier. Wellington bought in Jaushua Sotirio as a replacement for the injured David Ball. Both teams used the cool & windy conditions to push up their energy levels after weeks of sapping games in high temperatures on the Australian continent. Wellington were the better in the opening stages, their best chance in the first 15 minutes coming from a long range strike by star midfielder Ulises Davilia blasted onto the base of the post. The Wanderers responded going to the other end, Pirmin Schwegler on his return from suspension getting a lucky deflection that threatened to loop over the keepers head only to go just wide of the goal.

The early warning from Davilia wasn't heeded by the Wanderers defence and he took full advantage to open the scoring for Wellington. The Nix worked the ball around on the right flank, Sotirio and Gary Hooper combining to open the space for Davilia, the Mexican had the freedom of the pitch to size up the left footed strike, with no midfielders in sight Dylan McGowan attempted to close down the shot but his pathetic attempt to get in the line of the ball did nothing to stop it blazing along the turf into the bottom corner.

It took until the 37th minute before the Wanderers managed another decent look at goal. It was an audacious long range effort from Mitch Duke, wind assisted it rocketed high and to the right of the Wellington goal. He followed up two minutes later with another shot after cutting onto his right foot, this one fell easily into the arms of Marinovic in the Wellington goal. The game devolved into a scrappy mess heading into the break and neither side could change the 1-0 scoreline before half-time.

The second half opened the the excitement of Wellington breaking through on goal only for the linesman to rule the player offside after they missed their shot. An hour in Kwame Yeboah had a shout for a penalty turned down after he was pulled down in the box by a Wellington defender, the VAR declined to intervene.

Liberato Cacace hammered the final nail in the coffin of the match and perhaps the tenure of Wanderers coach Markus Babbel in the 87th minute. A simple passing movement put Cacace on the left flank with the entire Wanderers defence in front of him, and the speedy winger took them all on. The blazed past Tate Russel and left Ziegler for dead, in front of them stood McGowan who capped off one of the worst games for a Wanderers defender since Aritz Borda played for the club, as he stood like a statue and gave Cacace the green light to cut in on his right foot and fire a strike towards the near post that did just enough to beat Matt Jurman's cover defence and Daniel Lopar's right foot did nothing more than lift the ball into the back of the net.

Wellington's win pushed their unbeaten run to 9 games and sent them into the top 4, while for the Wanderers they remain stuck in 8th place with just 1 win from their last 10 games and only 4 wins for the entire season.

With no reinforcements apparently incoming during the transfer window, and a home game against 4th place Perth coming up it doesn't seem likely that Markus Babbel can turn around the team. With one failed season under his belt and another in progress, he has had more than enough time to find a solution. Yet he has not. Babbel's 25% win rate (just 10 wins in 40 games) puts him in the category of such failures as Mehmet Durakovic, Rado Vidosic and Paul Okon. It is more than time for a change. Not only for the manager Babbel, but the team ownership including Paul Lederer need to closely examine the ongoing position of Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas, who has lead the club to failure after abysmal failure since 2016. It is not good enough and something must change and change drastically.

The Wanderers face Perth Glory at the Western Sydney Stadium on Sunday January 19 with kickoff at 6:30PM.

Does anyone else hate our defence make opposition fullbacks look like Lionel Messi?

This week with Cacace just breezing past 4 defenders was disgusting to watch

Was waiting for someone to Kevin Muscat him but instead I got flashbacks to Adeleke-Ibini in the derby

Was it just me or was the camera work super bad that game? There were times where they were jerking the camera to follow the ball? Or they had zoomed in too much? I don’t know,

Nah just the wanderers performance burning my eyes

Disappointing to see no improvement over the past 2 months.

Some players make an effort (eg: Duke), but most lack top skills and quality (eg: Yeboah).  Muller shows flashes of brilliance, but is not consistent and the others being poor around him doesn't help.

From the youngsters, Sullivan seemed to give us a spark when he came on.  Grozos continues to look hesitant any time the ball goes near him (I've never understood the hype around him).  Russell didn't have a great game, he got ripped by Cacace for the 2nd goal.

I was in the Babbel in camp, but after this, as far as I'm concerned, he can go. Just not sure who is available that would be better?

Officially Babbel Out

He has absolutely no answers. There are many managers out there who can come in. Some with pedigree some without pedigree.

You have Sven Goran Eriksson who literally applied to get the Jets job. Or we could go for Ernie Merick. Or we could go for Pappas or NPL manager.

Some of these players (Yeboah, Ziegler, Mcgowan, Meier etc) need to be released ASAP. Absolutely shocking especially Yeboah. He makes me want to punch the wall repeatedly.

As well as this, re-sign players such as Nick Sullivan (this kid is absolutely class), Schwegler, Lopar (undecided tbh), Muller (he claims he is on a 2 year deal un several interviews), Jurman and Duke.

And then sign players around those players.

Its become beyond embarrassing and I genuinely think a lot of our fans will defect to Macarthur.

Also gonna leave this here #JTOUT .

3 games into the season looking down the ladder from up top and thinking how easy is this, WTF HAS HAPPENED?

what an implosion, what a fall from grace, Babbel and the squad have been given time and the expectation this is the blip that happens, she'll come good soon, but no coming good happening!

Just feels a continuation of the last 4 years, very very disappointing, if Babbel stays or goes couldn't give a stuff now, season is over, players are losing their confidence as a group big time now, IF form suddenly turned around it would be absolutely dumbfounding, cannot see it happening though.

there is plenty of criticism that can be leveled at JT/Lederer & co but I don't think you can lay this season's failures at their feet. they coughed up big $ for a big name coach and multiple bundesliga players as well as a couple of fringe or former socceroos - what more could they realistically have done?

the failure is squarely on babbel and the players - in terms of reputation and on paper ability this is one of the best squads we have had - probably on a par with the alberto/andreu adelaide GF team.

Babbel has been an abject failure in molding these players into anything resembling a coherent, competent and organised team - he owns this and I suspect he is about to pay the price.

That first half will be the end, it was really bad and Bozza captured the frustration and first half performance pretty well. As a manager you cannot put a team out and survive in your job with that level of performance, it just isn't sustainable. Players did not looked like they cared first half, that is on Babbel. He must have given them the rocket at half time, too little too late,

Totally agree, if there is one thing that can be blamed on JT/Lederer is that they picked the coaching staff apart from that they gave them all the opportunities to succeed.

It’s taken me until now to decide, but I’m now ‘Babbel Out’.

there has been no improvement since he took over last season, in fact we seem to have regressed.

Agreed. Players look to be getting worse. Most were excited by Yeboahs start last season.

Seems to be no plan, not strategy, just shuffle the pack each week and cross the fingers.

Not sure about the JT out rhetoric. He’s an exec, a suit. He isn’t playing up front for us. He backed the coach (who came with decent pedigree) with plenty of $, they brought in players who looked on paper to be some of the best in the comp. It turns out the coach can’t coach and the players aren’t what their reputation suggested they were. So bring in a good coach and find out if the problem is Babbel or the players.

My blame of them is for the three years of when we to move to parra it will be all fixed, end of S4 we had made a grand final had a good squad and an amazing fans we pissed that away and that not all on spotless, that’s on going with a CCM squad in season 5 we haven’t managed to turn any of it round since either onfield or off

Would prefer we give it to Haliti, with Heff and Beauchamp to come in too when the W-league finishes.

The season is a write off anyway, bring in some people who understand the mentality required for this club. We've got nothing to lose now.

Give these guys the interim gig and find a proper replacement for the off season.

Agree with this. It is now up to the management to work which players we resigned, the likes of Lopar, Duke, Jurman, Muller and Schwegler who are of contract after this season before other teams step in namely Macarthur. Regardless of who the coach is players need to be resigned now for stability more than anything.

I’ll probably calm down later but who deserves to be resigned?

This is what makes it really strange and confusing. Yeboah was good last season and this season he is bad. Same can be said to most of the new players they all had a great resume...Jurman, Meier, Muller, McGowan.......good players don't just become bad overnight .
