That's really the crux of it, isn't it? It's wanting some sort of ownership or agency of it.

But here's the thing, let's get out of the medical field and take some other "facts"-based field. Have a read of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galois_theory

How many of the words on that page can you understand? For instance, they use the word "field" in the first sentence but it refers to the mathematical notion of 'field'.

I'd wager you and other members of the public would truly understand around 5% of that article.

Then, someone makes a slick Youtube video to try and explain Galois theory in layman's terms so that you can "understand" it too.

If you, armed with that Youtube video, tried to strike up a conversation with a university professor on the subject, you'd be lost after the first few seconds for sure.

If you wanted to actually understand the topic, here's the mathematical prerequisites for an Australian university:

  • Year 12 mathematics
  • First year tertiary mathematics (vector spaces)
  • Second year tertiary mathematics (linear abstract algebra)
  • Third year tertiary mathematics (abstract algebra)

After you do all of the above, now you can study Galois theory properly. I'd wager 0.1% of the population at most have touched the topic and studied it in depth.

Now faced with a shiny Youtube video or a researcher in the field, the member of the public is advised to listen to the actual expert.

Science and in this case, mathematics, is not about opinions. It doesn't care about your feelings. This is not Year 12 English.

Good perspective, Unlimited. Good post.

Trust me, I'm very aware of the old saying that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I am.

At the same time, via our health experts, govt and their minions in the media, we have absolutely no information, no message about anything, other than, be afraid, no...be terrified...deadly Delta is on the rampage, there is nothing you can do to save yourself, your family, your community, except get vaccinated.

Happy to be corrected on this.

Such benign language!

Why use the term "protein piece", instead of the "spike protein"?

That's what it is...the spike protein of the Wuhan virus.

Why "teach" the cells in your body to manufacture the spike protein...and then eliminate it? Why??

Squirt in dead whole virus cells if you like, as vaccines have always done, and get my body to trigger an immune response.

No problem with that.

I'm  really not keen on taking in something to train my cells to produce a virus spike protein, just to have my immune system then attack it and eliminate it.

Really Wendy, I thought you were better than this? This language has racial undertones and I'm disappointed you're using this term instead of the proper scientific and colloquial terms.

The reason they started to research mRNA technology was to make vaccine development more efficient and simpler. Growing large amounts of a virus, sufficiently weakening it and/or extracting critical parts of it takes a lot of time. With mRNA technology, they only require the mRNA/DNA sequencing of the virus in order to produce them. This technology could be used to create a vaccine for any infectious disease simply by inserting the right mRNA sequence for that disease. They're already talking about mRNA being used against some types of cancer, HIV/AIDS, Cystic Fibrosis. It's an incredible piece of science that they've been working on for 30 years.

Why do we now do keyhole surgery for many health problems instead of invasive exploratory surgery like we have done for decades? It's because our technology has progressed and has become more efficient and advanced.

Just like @FCB said, why did we even bother leaving Africa if we weren't going to ever progress as a species.

I got as far there as being called a racist.

Dear God!

I spend my days at school with international students, the majority of them Chinese kids. 2 are from Wuhan.

You'd be very welcome to ask them if I'm a racist.

FFS.

The fact is, the vaccines have een made to have people react to the spike protein of the original virus, the wild virus, the virus identified in Wuhan...whatever you want to call it.

But you know best in all matters, I'm sure.

Yep...a waste of time attempting a discussion here.

I'll leave you to your self congratulatory wisdom in all things Covid related.

Jess, we need to be careful to not get so politically correct that we police language too harshly.

I would agree that the messaging has been atrocious. Why isn’t there a concerted effort to educate the public? Something that creates a sense of shared knowledge. I always wonder who does health promotion in our country. And who does the public relations. Anyone seen Jacinta  in NZ? She gets on and streams a conversation to people. She treats people with respect and brings them on her thinking journey about this virus. If only the media weren’t based on sensationalising everything , they could play a role in having an informed and engaged community.

Having said that though, Wendy, there really is nothing you can do at this stage to save yourself with enough certainty except vaccination. All the other stuff that ensures a healthy immune system is what most people do here naturally. It’s not enough.

Jess didn't call you a racist Wendy.

She said describing the virus has racial undertones. It does. That's what Trump and co were calling it specifically for that purpose. I don't want to speak for Jess, but for me,  your use of that term doesn't say anything about you other than highlight a little bit about where some of the stuff you have been reading is coming from.

You can call it being PC if you like, but language matters, a great deal - not just with something like that, but also with other phrases and words that get used around this topic. Eg., censorship, apartheid, dictatorship.... those words communicate that certain things are happening that aren't, but the more they get used, the more people view what's happening that way - and the more the real meaning of those words gets devalued.

Could be wrong but I think the Spanish Flu may have originated in USA but due to war time censorship publicity was subdued and because Spain was neutral it appeared in its newspapers. The German Measles (Rubella) was named because it was being studied by German scientists.

Now, to avoid racial undertones Covid and its variants are named after the Greek alphabet.

Haha , I thought you were blaming the Trumpster. I know he's getting on a bit but didn't think he was hundreds of years old ! What you are going on about is PC bullshyte.

I seem to recall flu epidemics over the years being frequently prefixed by the country of origin. Absolutely nothing racist about it , just a convenient tag for differentiation.

I'm wading in here very carefully, I certainly wouldn't like to describe anyone on here as a racist. However agree with marron language matters.

Apart from anything else using that term, really does come across as a MAGA hat wearing "stop the steal"

mmmm..

I think this misses the point a lot. I don't think either @CaptainJess or @Unlimited or for that matter me are claiming a knowledge of all things COVID far from it.

But the dismissal of such bodies CDC and institutions (most major Unis) evidence and views on the vaccine, would to me suggest "knowing best .. and a wisdom in all things covid" or it not "all" things a I know more than the muggles and the CDC, and the Unis, and ATAGI ... ... ...

Like I say in some ways I admire the cool alt-right kids confidence in their abilities that they such passionately believe in knowing better then structures such as unis and the CDC, or on other subjects the IPCC, but I don't share it. I outsource to those bodies, their systems and smart mofos

Congratulations! The first it's PC gone mad post for ages, I've missed them. Go on call him woke why you are at it, or maybe a snowflake...

Context dude, context.. your god's use of Wuhan Flu, was often accompanied by other terms like Kung Flu etc. You and I both know he was seeking to pin this on china and he's exploiting peoples prejudices. Not BTW that I think for a second wendy was but if you use those terms you are on thin ice.

As for the hundreds of years, there are lots of non-PC terms that we (or at least people who aren't ignorant aresholes) don't use any more, that's progress.

I'm quite happy to blame the Trumpster for insisting on calling it the China Virus and the Wuhan virus when there is now an established nomenclature for these things (unlike in the past).

Every word people use has a context and meaning is established from that context. That's reality. You can call noting that PC bullshyte but it doesn't change it. When someone uses the term "Wuhan virus", the associations are very clear. You can choose to ignore those, and other "PC Bullshyte" things if you want, but, just like in the past when certain words were not socially acceptable, there are words today that have the same deal. Nothing's changed except what those words are.

Well spoken comrade from the Socialist Peoples Republic of Marrickville (?) What a clown.

As for pinning this on China , seeing you are so smart well can you enlighten me where it started comrade Bellend.

Some linguistics youtuber I was watching was saying frontal branial analysis has shown that alt-right types are not actually capable of understanding what context is, and literally don't see explanations when presented with them. They just see a blank page. Interesting stuff, 100% FACT.

Also recently saw a good series of videos on alt-right tactics used in debate and in presenting info, really fascinating and lots of stuff exhibited in these politics threads these days, I'll have to see if I can find them.

What’s this? I briefly step out to empty a bottle of red wine with very little help, and when I come back, what do I notice? WW3 has broken out, apparently.

Last time I looked, religious beliefs and natural science were yet to be reconciled. The Earth is still flat at the centre of universe, with the sun circling around us all, according to sun, apparently. Now there’s a conspiracy theory, if I’ve ever heard one. And the battle rages on! The vaccine vs ivermectin debate doesn’t even come close, yet has the same flavour, and it is of great importance. Make or brake stuff. Apparently.

How to solve this issue, on a football forum, of all places? It takes someone of great wisdom to cut through all this crap, and I think I’ve found him. The key message come after 35 second. See below.

But what do I know? I am convinced that those who belief in scriptures and Newtonian stuff are equally screwed. Being a believer in Quantum physics makes me vastly superior to most here. Which basically means that I am right. It’s a cross I am prepared to carry. To me, that’s a belief system as good as any. And if I find YouTube videos to prove my point I’ll post them, and no doubt that will convince all of you. Eventually.

Now, where did I put my chill pills? Did anyone say KFC?

You and comrade Bellend are really big on context. But you forgot to leave a space between "con" and " text". There is plenty of con in your text.
