Armageddon Thread

I had reason to go to the International Terminal at Sydney airport yesterday evening.

Talk about surreal, eerie and just very sad.

There were 3 flights scheduled for the night.

When I got there with a student flying home to China, there were about 10 other people waiting for check in counters to open (ALL were totally deserted) and a handful of security staff were standing around aimlessly (including 2 cops who cruised past us with huge weapons clutched to their chests).

After an hour or so...people for two of the flights started arriving and queuing.

People in hazmat suits who were maybe cleaning staff??? came and went...but 2 people in such gear also queued up, and appeared to be passengers (didn't have all the headgear on tho).

EVERYONE had on masks, of course...travellers, airline staff and security.

Leaving through Arrivals,  we could see a few buses at a distance waiting to escort passengers to quarantine  hotels,  and a dozen cop cars...but totally, totally empty taxi ranks and car parks.

A different world...it felt post apocalyptic.

It really did.

Here or Mental Health thread?

Maybe here...or both?

Collective pessimism is bad for our health. But here's how you can temper it

There are several threads on this forum where this applies.

To say I'm dismayed by the comments, attitude, pessimism, criticising* by many contributors on this forum is a huge understatement.

* I guess this contribution by me adds to that.

The total deaths worldwide reached 1 million today with the last 250k taking 46 days which is the quickest and 1 day less than the previous 250k.  The bugger isn't giving up.  Just when cases in India start to dip Europe is on the rise again but the Americas are still the worst hit at the moment.  When will it end?  When will a viable vaccine arrive?

How lucky are we to be in Australia at the moment and for the next 6 months  / summer.

Having talked to my parents yesterday in the UK they certainly wish they were here. The weather is getting cold, the nights dark and face 6 months of restrictions that will likely only get harder...feel for them...I would not want to be facing that.

Here's hoping we can keep nums low here and enjoy the summer. Envy of the world along with NZ.

If you have aged relatives here / relatives in aged care the worry goes on of course.

Got a text from my friend in Madrid...who is seriously depressed and very anxious. She says the talk is more lockdown are coming  in Madrid, and that political divisions are getting more pronounced. It's already ugly in certain suburbs, with unrest in the streets.

She got out about a month ago to Ibiza, where she spent a lot if her time growing up, and where she has friends. She is trying to go back, but they may be locked down...or at least are likely to be not letting people in.

It sounds disastrous...from her perspective.

Just heartbreaking...and yes, we are very fortunate.

La Nina declared this week, I think I saw.

This time last year we'd had a fire in the mountains and places up the coast were going up already.

Was out at Lithgow today, geez it's ******* depressing seeing the bald hills around it and coming back across the top to Bell it was still more of the same. Just dead in parts. :(

Spain's daily infection numbers are worse than their first wave. Over 10k just once then compared to several this time and the high numbers continuing for more days this time too. On a per capita basis, they are worse than the USA. But, as seems to be the case in many other countries, the number of deaths is much lower this time around.

Similar story in France too.

Israel seems to be in real strife though. There has already been violent protests about restrictions.  And now their daily infections are ~9k. Per capita this equates to about 1k per million of population which would be 330k a day in the USA!

Will we see a miracle cure.....? Bleach....Antiseptic.....?.....hydroxychloroquine.....?

Call me cynical but after the shyteshow which was the debate and Trump behind massively I am very sceptical.

Yeah my first thought as well.

Is the next debate still going to be on?
