What are you getting at?

That anthems are of dubious value/all bullshi.t /dangerous anyway...

Or...what does it matter if an anthem isn't meaningful...just sing it...

Or...??

I just think it's an odd thing that people get worked up about. Like, why is it important there's an old word that isn't used much in there (but is still understood?)

I don't care about the anthem at all myself, either way; I think we have just about the right amount of deference to it here haha.

But i don't think the update girt bits hold water. "Kids don't understand it"... so.... tell them? Like, from an educational perspective it's an odd thing don't you think? You wouldn't say "we better cross out all the "thous" in this shitty old play, the kids won't understand it". We just say "it's an old fashioned way of saying your".

Fair enough.

I really don't care about the "girt" bit. I basically would like the whole thing replaced.

It definitely WAS important to get rid of the "young"  tho. That idea was totally inappropriate.

PS I agree with your judgement about the amount of deference to the anthem here....fwiw.

Step in the right direction.

Historic change to Advance Australia Fair, Australia's national anthem, in the 'spirit of unity'

This is stupid

Jingoistic tokenism, trademark from Scotty from Marketing

We are one is already implied by use of the collective “we” and the first two words of the anthem “Australians all”, not to mention “us” two words later

“Australia’s sons” to “Australians all” actually made sense. This one is dumb.

The NSW Premier during the press conference today appealed to the other Premiers to consult with her before closing a border with NSW.

Looks like her lock-step with "Scotty from Marketing" has made her unpopular with the other Premiers.

Speaking of changing the anthem, this came up on my TikTok feed the other day. It’s brilliant IMO.

It retains the essence of the anthem through the tune, but then has updated lyrics to better reflect a more inclusive society and acknowledges our indigenous history and The Dreaming. Please have a listen (even though it’s a TikTok!).

I liked what I heard of that Jess (wouldn't let me listen all the way through).

Better than what we have now imho.

Disturbing, especially if you are in the Hughes electorate....before the last election his party was about to dump him but Morrison stepped in..... Captains pick.

Yet again we see Scott Morrison and Josh Frydenberg lying about helping those who have ripped off by the banks. They are the enablers of thieves which makes them the worst possible part of society.

Their motto should be profits-for-our-financial-backers-before-people.

Didn’t they vote against a royal commission into banking like 26 times? I’m not surprised at all

.....and don't forget this little beauty........"Westpac has agreed to pay the largest fine in Australian corporate history — a $1.3 billion civil penalty for more than 23 million breaches of anti-money laundering laws."

The question of who went to jail.....?.....No one.......says it all.

Maybe this thread will get a bit more attention now that the Trump circus has left town?

A good opinion piece frim Laura Tingle.

Her phrase"...bordering in gibberish" from Scotty from marketing is a highlight here.

Can Biden's calls for unity spark a tone shift in Australia's 'pretty ordinary' politics?
