  • Bridge Blasts Wanderers To First Home Win Against Imploding Heart

    mack

A first half Mark Bridge goal and a second half own goal to Melbourne Heart defender Patrick Gerhardt was enough to give the Wanderers their first ever home win.

Bridge got on the end of some tidy work by Joey Gibbs, who flicked the ball backward after receiving a great pass from Aaron Mooy. Bridge ran onto the ball and took a side footed shot from just outside the area as his first touch. Bolton got a foot to the ball but that only mean it flicked up slightly as the path took it into the net. The second half goal came after Hersi broke down the right hand side and crossed it along the floor into the middle. Liberian international Patrick Gerhardt got in a tangle with himself, trying to flick the ball with the outside of his foot sending it crashing into the back of the net. Josip Tadic scored a well taken volley to pull the visitors back to 2-1 but neither side were able to impact the score sheet again.

In front of Australian National Team boss Holger Osiek, the first chance of the game fell to Garcia who dragged his long shot well right. A series of fiery encounters had Poljak and Simon Colosimo reprimanded for fouling, with Colosimo coming in from behind and collecting Ono as well as the ball. Polenz was caught from behind and cut down by Hoffman who was inexplicably allowed to continue with the ball despite a clear lunging foul. Ono came flying through on a tackle in retaliation, collecting Hoffman in the legs and earning himself a yellow card. Hoffman spent some time on the canvas receiving treatment.

The first chance for the Wanderers came as a result of a blatant foul by Gerhardt. Despite lashing out with his foot and cutting down Adam D'Apuzzo the Heart central defender was not cautioned. The foul was around 25 yards from goal and just off centre to the left. Ono and Mooy stood over the ball with Mooy taking on the responsibility. His shot cleared the wall but never had the spin to allow it to dip on target and it drifted harmlessly out for a goal kick.

A run of fouls were committed by the Heart players, Behich tripped Polenz, Colosimo elbowed Hersi in the head despite winning a header and Josip Tadic tripped Aaron Mooy. Tadic threatened after getting in behind the Wanderers defence but couldn't do anything with the chance. Gerhardt fouled Joey Gibbs and Mooy took a quick free kick to Shinji Ono, who was unable to control properly inside the area with the ball spilling from his feet and out for a goal kick. Hersi had a shot on the edge of the penalty box blocked by Behich on 22 minutes.

Josip Tadic finally won the first Melbourne Heart yellow card of the night in the 27th minute. Beauchamp stepped out and dribbled past the Heart striker who cut down the Wanderers captain without getting anywhere near the ball. Perhaps a soft yellow, but again, perhaps the referee finally ran out of patience with the Heart player and their persistent fouling. This allowed the Wanderers possession and they swiftly switched the point of the attack to the opposite flank. Bridge dribbled inside the Heart half and offloaded to Mooy. Mooy strode forward and unleashed a killer ball to Joey Gibbs. The young striker made an important touch with the ball falling slightly behind him, setting it up for Bridge to run onto the ball to finish the move he started with the first pass to Mooy. The first goal at home, just like the first ever goal in the Brisbane Roar away match being scored by ex-Sydney FC striker Mark Bridge.

Josip Tadic managed to win a dubious corner for his low wide shot and the poor decision nearly cost the Wanderers. Mate Dugandzic had a golden chance to equalise almost instantly, off a short corner the Wanderers cleared the ball out of the box but only as far as Mitchinson. He lofted the ball toward the back post, Dugandzic had drifted in from his wide position and as the ball floated over the head of the Wanderers defence it fell to him on the volley. He got his foot to the ball but scooped it high.

With 10 minutes left in the first half Aaron Mooy controlled a looping ball well with his first touch and unleashed a volley with the second. Colosimo attempted a desperate block and the ball flew out of danger. Poljak had the last real chance of the half, being released by Ono and the left back galloped through the centre of the pitch, with the crowd willing him to shoot he pulled the trigger but his body position wasn't great and the resulting finish was poor.

The Wanderers only needed 30 seconds from the resumption of play to create the first chance of the second half. Hersi made room for a cross and whipped the ball in, Gibbs won it in the air but his header lacked power. A 5 minute period without chances ensued, until Hersi jinked and shaped to cross twice before finally delivering a ball along the turf. Ono received the ball, Ono flicked the ball up into the air and performed an acrobatic bicycle kick, Bolton was well placed and the shot lacked power as the Japanese international stretched out as he fired at goal.

It wasn't long before the Wanderers fans had another goal to celebrate. Poljak rode a challenge, the referee played advantage and he played an exquisite diagonal ball out to Hersi on the wing. With Gibbs threatening at the back post, Patrick Gerhardt intercepted the ground level cross from Hersi. Gerhardt's positioning was superb, but instead of clearing the ball behind easily, he got himself in a right tangle and ended up flicking the ball past his stranded keeper to score an own goal at the 51st minute mark. Joey Gibbs had a shot blocked during a corner scramble, it fell to Bridge and the ball went skyward and out.

At two goals down the Heart finally started to ramp up their play, Behich sent a free kick straight at the wall after Topor-Stanley conceded the foul blocking Tadic who was making a run behind. When Tadic crossed after Topor-Stanley failed to clear the ball, it eventually ran back across the goal mouth to the Heart left sided attack. They delivered a cross back where the ball initially came from, Tadic was left unmarked and he volleyed the ball home to score his first ever A-League goal.

Garcia nearly equalised only a minute after the 57th minute strike from Tadic, Dugandzic beat his marker and whipped the ball into the near post. Garcia got free of his marker with a near-post run but only managed to hit the post. Aaron Mooy won the worst shot of the match award with his 61st minute shot which curled out not just for a goal kick by for a throw-in. A Heart throw-in deep inside the Wanderers half caused a mix up between Beauchamp and Covic, the captain expecting his keeper to claim a throw in as it ran toward the goal. Neither did however, and it let Tadic take a swing around Beauchamp's body. If any contact was made it was slight and the ball ran into the safety of Covic's hands.

    heartlossr5ws300.jpg
Joey Gibbs was given an extremely soft yellow for a high foot as Gerhardt dived to head the ball clear. Mooy's long shot had some power but was directed straight at Clint Bolton who dove down low to make the save. Ono had another tough chance, a side footed volley from a Hersi cross, but the resultant shot was low powered, Ono hitting the turf in frustration perhaps slipping at the vital moment.

When only 20 minutes remained on the clock Simon Colosimo was issued a yellow for some pushing in the box at a Heart free kick. An incorrectly awarded corner to the Heart saw Garcia rise above his marker Polenz but there was no direction on the header. Another horrible decision gave the Heart another corner when Gerhardt deflected a Dugandzic shot out, luckily for the Wanderers nothing came of the resulting corner.

Substitute Labinot Haliti came on and provided an immediate impact, running onto a Gibbs flick-on. The left winger pushed into the box and crossed it toward Gibbs and Hersi who were both making near post runs, neither could make solid contact and the ball ran out. A huge penalty shout was turned down when Gibbs was barged into by Colosimo as the Wanderers went up for a header but the referee was not interested one iota. Adam D'Apuzzo became the latest victim of the referee after his 77th minute holding foul on Dugandzic. Polenz had the best long range shot of the night, Aaron Mooy completely bamboozled Garcia and shifted the ball wide for Polenz. The right back knocked the ball out in front of him, and with no Heart defenders closing him down he connected with a fierce drive that barely missed collecting the cross bar.

With time running out and still a goal down the Heart started to pour forward in greater numbers. Matt Thompson collected the scraps from a free kick and his shot was blocked by Topor-Stanley. Tadic got on the end of a high ball but he was facing the wrong way and couldn't do anything with the chance. Mateo Polenz was the last Wanderers to go into the note-book as he received a yellow card for collecting his opponent with a elbow. Macallister knocked down a long throw for Behich whose first touch put it back into the path of the big substitute striker, the shot not troubling Ante Covic at all.

Labinot Halti was scythed down by Sam Mitchinson after he and Hersi created some great combination play. It was the 7th yellow card of the contest. The Wanderers managed to contain the Heart during injury time, a Topor-Stanley foul in a dangerous position came to nought for the Heart. After playing 5 minutes of injury time Garcia tripped Mark Bridge and before the free kick could be taken the final whistle was blown, giving the Wanderers their first ever win at home and propelling them to 4th on the league ladder albeit with the rest of the teams to play their matches over the weekend. Western Sydney could stay in their current high of 4th, but could also drop as low as 8th depending on results.

The Wanderers next match is against the Newcastle Jets at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday the 10th of November at 5:30pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

    Tonight was fantastic.

I took 3 newbies, 2 of their sons and my 2 nephews to the game. They all had an absolute ball.

The RBB were at their best tonight. From my vantage point, the numbers are swelling although the most active members are always toward the centre. The crowd around me started to pick up on a few of the chants and I did notice that the ground announcer started things off before the match, which was a good start. We'll get there I reckon. Unfortunately, we had a lot of missing members tonight, but given that it was Friday night, it is somewhat understandable

The Poznan looked fantastic and nearly everyone in the bay seemed to participate. My mates couldn't believe what was going on down there. Looks like we have a couple of new members come the weekend.

Kudos to the club with the run on the field initiative, the kids obviously could of stayed out there all night (big and small).

Great match to start our home sheet, but pity about it being a Friday. I work in Canberra during the week, so there was no way of getting up in time for the match. :sorry:

The RBB still brought the house down though - loud, westie and proud! And the football contniues to improve. Bring on the biplanes...

Friday, v Heart is probably one of our worst home fixtures. 8K is still a good turn out and will build up from that.

such a good night man, the march was awesome once again, the atmosphere within the RBB especially after the first goal was just nuts (I hugged so many randoms). There was a row of about 5 or 6 kids who couldnt have been much older than about 16 in the row behind us, including one of them who was a girl who wasnt standing on a seat, she was standing on the ground right behind mack and couldnt see a ****en thing, but all of them were singing the whole game (including the girl), and I could tell there were some chants they didnt know the words to but all of them were giving it a fair go, so if those kids read this - about second row from the front on the right side of bay 56 - massive kudos to you guys.

Yea, they were there before the RBB arrived, they kinda **** themselves when we all walked in, but credit to them they stayed and gave it a go, the guys of the group were definitely involved in the who do we sing for chants!!!

From where I was sitting, the RBB looked and sounded fantastic. They almost filled all of the 3 bays, and on the edges of the outside bays (55 and 57) everyone was standing. I could not see any "sitters" in those 3 bays. How good is that?? New flags?? Wonderful. And I joined the march for the first time - awesome!!!

And the game?? Ha, ha, ha - we won at home. I'm over the moon! Mooy and Ono are working well together. Our front third was just the best I have seen them. I think we have learned to finish - lol! Hersi - I don't know what he is fueled on, but he is fast - a weetbix kid?? Beauchamp and NTS also were great. Actually, there were no weak links last night. They all played well. I hope Dino stays "injured".

What a game! Had an absokute awsome time capped by a win.

Sat with my mates jus behind the cpc and it was awsome fun, lost my voice.

RBB was even bigger!! Just keeps growing its great to see! My only thought is that alot of the guys standing on the outsides dont seem to get into at all. Are these guys just newbies? Would be complete once these guys sing amd move in unity with the rest!!!

The game, great performance!! Up until 2-0 we didnt press as much which opened up some space for heart but soon after we fixed this. Gibb had a few heading chanes but he will get there soon, his general play just offers the whole team so much.

And Hersi!! I said tr guy would just keep improving and now hes already a crowd favourite! Loved his ovation when he went off.

Love watching Mooy and Ono worl thier stuff! My money worth right there regardless of a win.

Whole team did well considering the ref was a bias piece of ****!!

    WANDERERS!!!

I felt sorry for the poor girl, because Benched and then some other dude were in her way as well... but one of those guys should have jumped down and let her up lol.

The RBB was a sight coming down church st. I came out of one of the convenience stores and looked down the street and all you could see was red and black.

haha, to be honest, I was too drunk to take note. I do remember her though. Her mates should have made room for her.

I think NTS had a bit of an off night with a few uncharacteristic mistakes and Hersi was slow to get going but made up for it in the second half. How long until players are missing due to yellow cards though?

It wasn't the first time NTS has made the same defensive error, badly misjudging the roll of the ball as he hopes it will go out for a goal kick, and lets someone from the opposition get in front of him. We've conceded a goal and had our woodwork hit twice because of that exact error now. Popa needs to sort that out.

You are right, he has done that from the first round. The guys behind me pay out on him every time he touches the ball with sarcastic calls like "quality defending there gentlemen". His positioning seems to be a bit off as far as shielding the ball out is concerned. He tries to block the player's path when he is too far from the ball.

good observations and agree NTS needs his positioning and decision making sorted. Beauchamp i feel had a much better game, NTS and beauchamp may very well become the best CB pairing in the a-league, if not already. Can't wait =D

still think the only thing that will hurt our defence this season is pace. organisation they're fine. but adelaide showed other teams how to hurt us. halloran pushed d'appuzzo all game up in brisbane too...

aside from that, agree with what most have said, there wasn't a stand out poor player. happy days.

I highly support Shinji Ono's tackle. Shows passion and aggression, but he is not a dirty player.

Mooy and Ono are startign to play some good football going forward, Hersi was fantastic in the 2nd half well done to Pops were looking like a really tough team to break down and now were more fluid going forward as well.

Hersi cracked a smile when he heard it.

I have no problem with Ono's tackle. It was a payback tackle after Polenz was hacked and the ref let it go.

I also noticed Shinji smack the ground with his hand after he missed that volley right in front of us.

These 2 things are good signs. They tell us that he is passionate for the team and he wants to do well. He isn't here for a picnic.
