  • Bridge Blows Jets Away As Western Sydney Wander Into 2nd

    blameturner

A stunning solo goal from Mark Bridge was the eventual match winner for Western Sydney, as Youssouf Hersi also put himself on the scoresheet just before half-time. Ruben Zadkovich scored a late consolation goal but the three points went the Wanderers way.

The Wanderers came into the regional round with the chance to take outright second spot on the table, and took their chance with both hands going five games unbeaten - the first side in the A-League this season to do so.

The Wanderers, in a match which they were not at their best, managed to take their chances, giving them a narrow 2-1 win over the Newcastle Jets.

Western Sydney opened the match strongly, creating numerous chances which were squandered. Youssouf Hersi had the best chance early on, with his shot going straight to Mark Birighitti, who was a strong figure in the Newcastle goal.

Aaron Mooy and Mateo Poljak both went close from long range, however still the sides remained locked at 0-0.

Newcastle dominated large patches of possession and looked to challenge the Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic, who was largely aided by his strong defensive line, which was still missing Captain Michael Beauchamp. Vice-Captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley however took the role to his own, and made a number of key blocks and interceptions.

Just seconds before half-time, Youssouf Hersi broke the dead-lock, with his deflected shot flying over the stationary defenders, who could do nothing but watch. Hersi and Ono peeled away to celebrate with the vibrant RBB, as Campbelltown Stadium erupted.

Newcastle came out of the half-time break with a larger sense of urgency, pressing higher and taking the game to the Wanderers defence. The Jets however failed to make possession turn into goals, with no real chances occurring for either side till the final third of the match.

With Hersi and Ono both replaced, the Wanderers have the Polenz to thank, with an excellent ball to Mark Bridge, who out muscled Josh Mitchell to power the ball in the back of Birighitti's net, from a tight angle.

Ruben Zadkovich scored a rocket from outside the area in stoppage time, however it wasn't enough for the Jets to takeoff and launch a comeback.

Goalkeeper Ante Covic received a yellow card in the dying moments of the match for delaying the restart of play, after copping abuse from both Emile Heskey and Ryan Griffiths, the latter lucky not to receive a straight red for striking Covic in the heated exchange. Popovic said it was important his team continued their good form at the business end of the season. The Wanderers trail leaders Central Coast by four points.

The Wanderers next match is against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park, Melbourne, on Saturday the 9th of February at 7:45pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

I just wonder where that used to be when he played for both us AND newy. Oh well. Thanks for the win lads, well deserved.

I think it's the coach. Tony's got them fitter than any team and if they don't perform there on the bench, so he has to try. He is still the same old Bridge, missing sitters, but his work rate is much better than ever before. And also a few goals this year, getting closer to double digits. Never thought i'd say that about him before the season.

Was I the only one who thought the crowd estimation was a bit low.... That looked like way more than 10,000 to me....

Why would want to start a fight with Ante "Wonderwall" Covic?

Covic could beat the **** out of both of them. Dudes a beast.

awesome night as always! Another fine performance and trouble free night in the stands.

Marching on the road was great, all the cars to see and take it in.

Took a few noobs to the game as it was local for a few friends (easy to get them there)

comments 3 different mates made to me at half time after I convinced them to sit in RBB

'this isn't a football this is a festival'

'make sure you get me to Parramatta every home game from now'

'who could ever go to an NRL game against after this'

For me this is what I will take from the night. WSW would have won over a lot of new fans tonight and once again the RBB plays a big part in that...

The other moment was Covic taking on the big bear Heskey and cock slapper's brother - Covic has to be the hardest farker in the A-league. If only mus**** was playing next weekend he could put the twat in his face.

for me biggest game of the season so far in Melbourne, can't wait!

Was a weird night for me. It was a lot closer to home than parra is, but:

    - my car **** itself two minutes from the car park, so went to the pub for 10 mins before NRMA came and I had to leave

    - Went back to the pub and didn't get in cos it was 'full'

    - saw people getting smashed by cops for no apparent reason other than general banter

    - received silent treatment from seccies at the pub after the game as to why we weren't being let into the pub

    - KFC was ****

    - Someone stole all my hub caps

Not complaining, it was just a weird night! Great to get the win. We've now beaten everyone in the comp except Central Coast. The way I see it, provided we keep winning, that game against CCM in a few weeks time will basically determine who comes first this season. If we win next week against Victory, it will be MASSIVE for the table positions.

We're 17 points ahead of Brisbane (7th) as well. They would have to win every game for the rest of the season, and we would have to basically lose all of our games (maybe draw 1 or 2) to be out of the finals. Although I think Brissie still have to play tomorrow, so if they beat ESFC then they do get a bit closer and make the original statistic a bit redundant and less exciting

Agreed. My comrades and I were surprised to say the least. Given the stated capacity is 20 000, I don't want to know where they'd fit in that extra 10,000. Easy 13-14 000' tonight

I agree the security at the pub and the game including the cops were over the top today.

i think the seated capacity is much less than 20k which is why it looked heaps over 10k, considering they closed off one of the hills.

Stoked to have won tickets to the Perth game at the pub beforehand.

That was heaps of fun, great to get the 3 points.

    Great game.

Mark Bridge's goal was an amazing individual effort to weave and wrestle through the defenders.

Absolutely exhausted with all the singing and chanting.. not to mention the drive to and from Canberra.

Great to see us inch closer to CCM......

When zadkovich got the ball before his goal, am I the only one who thought 'better send someone to the car park to get the ball'. I think covic will have wanted to do better with that one.

The only Internet cafe I could find here in Bangkok was in a posh coffee shop in a nice shopping centre! I got asked seven different times to be quiet because I was screaming "yellow ticket *****, shoot *****, ONOOOOOO, HERSIIIIIIIII, YEEAAAAHHHHH x2".

One of the big pluses of my holiday ending in Melbourne is that I get back into the football!!!!

Really? so you want the police to come and line up infront of the RBB every game when we do nothing wrong? the fence collapse was no body's fault, every game they are in front of us lining up, if they are doing it for "public safety" then why arent they doing it in other parts of the stadium? that is INCLUDING the away supporters end? i get it taht we threw flares and bottles, but we have shown that we have behaved, I dont really like to see them spying on us with their binoculars and or lining up in front of us and waiting for us to do something, and oh yeah i seen them watching us with the binoculars yesterday, they thought they were hiding but they really werent, i see them do the same at Parra stadium as well.

Why do we have to be treated like criminals? we have shown that we have behaved and no flares or smoke bombs have been used or thrown since the ban, whilst the other teams such as Sydney FC and Victory in their derby both used smoke bombs and in the Melbourne derby not only did they use smoke bombs, they also caused damaged to the seating areas and yet WE are the ones still being watched.....

I'll reiterate - The Police I am happy for you to mock.

I thought you were referring to the security guards and the stadium staff attempting to fix the fence to stop us from surging again..

EDIT: I agree with the other sentiments regarding police in your statement

Great game, Jets were good as well for some parts, they play a little like us to some degree.

Like some the crowd was way off the announced.

The official size of the stadium indicates that there are 13,000 seats. There was no way we had too many empty seats, I could guess maybe 500 at most. This means we would have had at least 12,500 minimum. Someone really made a mistake in counting. Both my ticket and my daughters did not scan when we went in and the attendant only tore a part off. I would say thyat they did not get to count all of them.

They only count the scanned tickets, i know many people who's tickets were not scanned so they would not have been counted, hence the mistake in the count, also most of the empty seats came about due to people wanting to seat on the hill behind the goals, there was also a large number of people who were standing behind the wall directly behind the RBB and not in their seats...
