  • Jeronimo Strike Sinks Wanderers in Adelaide

    blameturner

A 69th minute goal by Argentinian Import Jeronimo Neumann in front of 8,950 fans has given Adelaide their jeronimor2wsw2012.jpgsecond win of the season in the Wanderers first defeat to A-League opposition.

The Wanderers proved yet again they will be competitive and will not be the whipping boys of the A-League. The Wanderers squandered numerous chances including a cross going past the face of goal, with nobody able to put a boot on it. Marquee star Ono had a few chances, taking the ball 10 metres before ultimately putting the ball over the bar.

Mateo Poljak came within inches of scoring the Wanderers first A-League goal with a 25 yard shot parried by Eugene Galekovic, before bouncing onto the line and regathered. Wanderers chances were rare and few but there were a few highlights in the midfield, with some good touches and passing by Mooy and Ono, who have been touted as a strong midfield combination.

A few bad passes however highlighted how quickly the squad had been put together, and the chemistry that had yet to form.

A Nikolai Topor-Stanley foul in the box led to a penalty being awarded by the match official Brenton Howard, in charge of his first A-League match, in the 65th minute. The resulting penalty kick by Jeronimo was expertly saved by Ante Covic bringing delight to the travelling RBB fans and those watching at home.

Expert defending shut down any Wanderers attack and only 4 minutes later, Adelaide's counter put the Wanderers on the back foot. Iain Ramsey expertly held up the ball before laying it off to Jeronimo who put the ball past rushing Covic.

A 79th minute substitution brought Elrich onto the park, which saw a change in the mentality on the pitch, with a very attacking Wanderers pushing forward in the final 10 minutes.

With only a few minutes remaining Haliti was on the end of an Elrich cross, which he put straight into the arms of Galekovic.

Coach Tony Popovic agreed there were some positives but still leaves Adelaide disappointed.

“There were positives, we had some good passages but unfortunately we didn’t have the end product tonight,†Popovic said. “We leave here with our heads held high but we are disappointed to a degree.â€

“Our defence has been solid, but we conceded a soft goal tonight and at the other end our final ball let us down.

“Adelaide are a good side, they are match hardened and you can tell in the way that they are playing currently.â€

The Western Sydney Wanderers have a week to prepare for their inaugural Sydney Derby at Parramatta Stadium on the 20th of October.

Our strikers really need to step up their game and start putting away the chances. I'm not convinced Kresinger is the player to be putting away 12+ goals this season for us, he's a hard worker but lacks the finishing quality IMO. Good luck to him, hopefully he can get on the scoresheet against Sydney FC next week

In regards to Kresinger whats more important for me is that he that he offers something to the team at the least. For all his running and hard work he has been pretty damn ineffective and poor. And i think that not only does he have to improve but popa would have to adjust things a little to get the best out of him.

Otherwise after 2 games its clear were going to play a compact counter-attacking style, where id be more inclined and interested to see how Kubi would go at striker at some point. He played there for the majority of his time in nswpl and has a great touch and movement for young player. He may not exactly be ready yet, but a player of his mould would have more benefits for our current style.

But to be honest, id prefer a more patient possession style with the 4231 we play at times. In the second half we certainly saw better football and time with the ball but it suit the likes of Mooy, Ono, Hersi and Kresinger if we had more regard for possession. Still very early days though!

    I generally agree Deedee.

I'm assuming Popa does want to play more of a possession game so he'll persevere with Dino.

Regardless, it would be good to see a pacy front three at some stage, at least when chasing a game

if we play with bridge and haliti as our wide men, Kresinger is useless.

they are the kind of wingers who want to tuck in and shoot, coz they don't have the pace to get around their man and whip in a cross. Kresinger isn't going to make an runs in behind the line and outpace the defenders.

if we get some pace out wide, and wingers who hug the paint (kubi for example), who will run at his defender and get in a cross, that's when Kresinger will be at his best. nodding home a cross.

kubi didnt get a run on friday night did he? Someone give me a good reason why he wouldn't be used more often, the dude is a machine and will cause trouble for even the best defenders in the league.

Dino's impressed me, for a big boy he works bloody hard. He's playing more of a target man role, and hasnt been getting much service from his wide players

I'd like to see Kubi come off the bench at the 60 minute mark next sat, i can see him causing some real trouble to east syds defence.

Wouldn't mind Joey Gibbs getting a start over Bridge, for mine bridge has been useless. hasnt offered much at all.

Regardless of the result, i thought wsw played well. Dominated the midfield with shinji, mooy and poljak and besides the goal were very solid in defence.

With some better quality crosses into the box, Kresinger will be the target man. Poor cross after poor cross is going to get us no where, it's a shame as we look great coming out from the back and into the midfield. We're able to turn posession over quite well, we just lack in the final third and far from clinical, sort of resembles watching the Socceroos at times.

Players that need to be on the pitch any given match are Ono, Mooy, Poljak, Appiah-Kubi & Elrich, I would say these are our 5 key players.

To the people bagging Kresinger, this is the problem. He is never going to outpace a defender and I would think that was obvious before he was signed. He's a good target and from what I have seen has a good touch and knows where his teammates are on the field (kept his defender off for Haliti's header vs AU, pass for Haliti's chance vs CCM).

The team is playing very well and if Popa can keep tweaking the lineup and sprinking the magic dust, the season should be very enjoyable. Hey, we only just lost on the weekend to a team who almost made the semis of the ACL (yeah ok, minus their best player).

He travelled to Adelaide as part of a 19 man squad.

Popa probably chose to protect our attacking weapons who may have been hacked down by Radelaide's hard nosed defenders.

Fair call Taurus. I did see you post something like that in another thread, after I had written that one. That being said, you cant go wrapping them in cotton wool.

We are not bagging any players personally. Just an honest assessment of each of the players weaknesses and strengths in our set up. Dino at the moment does not really work in our team as we are a counter attacking team (unless Popa decides to change this). We need speed, and players who will run onto balls and into holes. This creates space for guys like Ono and Mooy to also be more dangerous in attack.

Kresinger is better suited to someone like Perth Glory. And Bridge for me is better as a substitute. Although maybe at some stages in the season Kresinger will come in handy being in the starting line up. But at the moment we are one of the most predictable team in the competition. And that's only after two rounds.

There are definitely people on here writing negative comments about Kresinger. I call this "bagging" and a little unfair IMHO, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Having said that, I agree with most of your points re: Kresinger. The reason for this, however, is the way the wingers play (see Pup's original post) and the point I was trying to make was that our wingers should play wider and allow him to be a target CF. I'm sure he wasn't recruited for his pace :shout:

Look, I'll still go to every game I possibly can. And support the club financially. Even if they are down the bottom of the table. But sometimes you have to call it how you see it. And at the moment I think Popa has to tweak some things in attack.

I personally hope Kresinger rips and tears into their defence this week. Because that is what we need of him. Yes, I know he wasn't recruited for his pace. I am just questioning how we are playing him. That's all.

A few times Ono or Mooy has put in a through ball and big Dino is too slow to latch onto it and create a chance for himself (getting outrun by a CB). He is very much a target man to hold the ball up, and by playing counter attacking with defence splitting passes, he is not the right man for that position. If we played 2 up front, then have someone like Bridge or even Taj alongside him for that quick through ball.

either the two wide men need to change or the number 9 needs to change. not bothered which - just creating genuine chances would be nice.

adelaide attacked with pace and purpose and that made all the difference.
