Dimas Delgado's free kick rubbed out a Corey Brown opener to see the Brisbane Roar & Western Sydney Wanderers share a point each on a dreadful playing surface in Brisbane tonight.
The first half was marred by the utterly dreadful pitch offered up by Suncorp stadium. Following yet another idiotically booked concert, the pitch was split between areas of new turf that hadn't had time to stitch together, and pockmarked dead grass holed beyond what would be considered acceptable in semi-pro football let alone a top flight competition.
Brisbane Roar took the lead shortly after the second half resumption through fullback Corey Brown. Thomas Broich was allowed to step back onto his left foot and he delivered a cross into the path of the onrushing Brown, who had been let run at goal by a ball watching Jumpei Kusukami smashed the ball home with his left foot to open the scoring. Jerrad Tyson, who had an otherwise sterling game, would be somewhat disappointed at having let the goal come at his near post, albeit one that was so powerful that it might not have been stoppable at all.
Tony Popovic rung the changes on the hour mark, pushing Brendon Santalab, Kearyn Baccus & Nico Martinez on in search of an equaliser. It finally came in the 68th minute, as Dimas defied his previous form on the dead ball. Santalab had been cut down on the edge of the area, Dimas the Captain stepped up for the free kick, hitting it over the wall and baffling Michael Theo in the Roar goal with the shot across the face of goal.
Neither team could find a winner, and the point for the visitors was marred by a late straight red card to Santalab, after getting in a tangle with known diver Jade North, and the assistant referee decided it was worth a red card for Santalab.
With Lachlan Scott ineffective as the starting striker, and Kerem Bulut having apparently already left the country, it will leave Tony Popovic with an interesting choice up front for the Wanderers next match.
