  • Suncorp Surface Overshadows Draw

    mack

Dimas Delgado's free kick rubbed out a Corey Brown opener to see the Brisbane Roar & Western Sydney Wanderers share a point each on a dreadful playing surface in Brisbane tonight.

The first half was marred by the utterly dreadful pitch offered up by Suncorp stadium. Following yet another idiotically booked concert, the pitch was split between areas of new turf that hadn't had time to stitch together, and pockmarked dead grass holed beyond what would be considered acceptable in semi-pro football let alone a top flight competition.

Brisbane Roar took the lead shortly after the second half resumption through fullback Corey Brown. Thomas Broich was allowed to step back onto his left foot and he delivered a cross into the path of the onrushing Brown, who had been let run at goal by a ball watching Jumpei Kusukami smashed the ball home with his left foot to open the scoring. Jerrad Tyson, who had an otherwise sterling game, would be somewhat disappointed at having let the goal come at his near post, albeit one that was so powerful that it might not have been stoppable at all.

Tony Popovic rung the changes on the hour mark, pushing Brendon Santalab, Kearyn Baccus & Nico Martinez on in search of an equaliser. It finally came in the 68th minute, as Dimas defied his previous form on the dead ball. Santalab had been cut down on the edge of the area, Dimas the Captain stepped up for the free kick, hitting it over the wall and baffling Michael Theo in the Roar goal with the shot across the face of goal.

Neither team could find a winner, and the point for the visitors was marred by a late straight red card to Santalab, after getting in a tangle with known diver Jade North, and the assistant referee decided it was worth a red card for Santalab.

With Lachlan Scott ineffective as the starting striker, and Kerem Bulut having apparently already left the country, it will leave Tony Popovic with an interesting choice up front for the Wanderers next match.

As i said a few weeks ago Jumpei is cooked and not in Romeo's class. He is up there with Borda and Bruno as the three musketeers of terrible visa picks. Oops they all play for us :(

there is maybe a bit more :P i dont think we performed great but i am happy with the point, Tyson looked nervous but made some great saves, Santa's red makes things even more difficult and Jumpei has lost the initial impact i think so far

Borda did ok, Jumpei is was crap every second touch was a tackle

You watching the same game? He was dog ****. He was lucky aspro neville and clisby covered his arse.

I don't think any one of them was worse than the other. I thought Tyson had a good game. Clisby needs to watch the wide men a bit more. Brisbane started getting us on the wings.

I remembered when people were mocking romeo. Remember the time he would go pass a player then kept going before he loses the ball?

All of the sudden people are coming out of the wood work saying how great he was.

We had him for 2 years and he only performed well in the few months for us.

Btw tyson is still the shizz.

how dare you give Clisby some constructive criticism he is perfect and my saviour

Castelen could be woeful or awesome, but every time he got the ball it looked like something was going to happen. Jumpei offers nothing. Lightweight and ineffective. You get what you pay for.

Clisby's going ok. I think that left back position has always been our Achilles heel. There were a few signs early in the second half where they were getting in behind us and cutting the ball back.

    Probably not

I couldn't remember him doing anything particularly crap, as opposed to Jumpei who seemed to lose the ball with every touch

Now I think about it the bit where he totally lost McClaren with the ball over the top was a bit crap

Out of 5 imports only 2 are worthwhile and 1 of them we knew that from last year

Castelan at his worst is about the same as Jumpei at his best.

Jumpei at best is a few great step overs with little end product

Castelan would do that and we would be frustrated as we knew he could do better

at his best he would tear the back out of his opposition fullback

Happened twice and we were very lucky we didn't get punished. He lacks pace but more importantly he lack leadership.

NTS is slow but he is solid and he tracked his players better then borda.

    I am just frustrated.

Bright side is we have martinez. Fingers crossed we sign him for another year.

Jumpei needs to stop dribbling so much and start passing the ball and combining with other players. He looks terrible when he over dribbles. He's not that good, but he's not that bad either.

It is the tale of two draws. Last week, we should have won and done so convincingly. We didn't and it hurts. This week we outplayed a good team, snatched an equaliser and might have got a winner. Jumpei is so much better than Romeo, but he needs to stop trying to beat a whole team before passing. Personally for mine, we played football, showed ticker, and got the draw. My world looks more postive after this week.

Why was Martinez not starting? Was there a reason or was it just the old any player who shows promise needs to be put in their place Popa tactics?

I hear that both Martinez and Santa didn't pull up the best after the Auckland trip, so what with the short turn around I guess he played safe.

    He really isn't

Was not impressed with Scott tonight. Very lazy in defense and he let Nichols do all the pressing. If that was his brief from Popa, so be it, but it didn't look good as far as this mug punter was concerned.

I can't recall Jumpei actually completing a pass (maybe Opta stats will prove me wrong), and his mazy runs looked threatening only once or twice in the whole match.

Clisby looked good, and is proving to be an able replacement for Jamo.

I couldn't see the Santa incident from where I was sitting, so I'll have to wait until I can see the replays.

How good is Lang Park as a stadium. Shame that even at the pointy end of the table there doesn't seem to be any fans around to fill it.

Credit to the whole team who came over to the fans tonight.

Unfortunately Jumpei's second touch is a tackle on many occasions. I'm not sure how much room for improvement he has with this and other aspects of his game

The send off is a disgrace I'm not one to bag the refs there is enough people to cover this but yeah north body checked him

Everyone would take a draw before the game

    Solid point 2017 hopefully

    Brings out first home Win!

Me: are you ******* blind?? How the **** isn't that a penalty???Oh that's right, cockhead KGJ is in charge. I should be greatful we even got the free kick from that dumb ass

The boy: calm down dad, it's in a good spot.

    Me: ****!!!

    Wife: language

    [sits down again]

Me: we're so **** at a deadball! Might as well just give them the goal kick now and get on with it. Free kick or penalty, it would that Dimas anyhow

The boy: isn't that a naughty word?

Me: Dimas, not dumb a r s e. Let Nico take it! He can't do any worse

[Dimas hits what can only be described as the best free kick in the history of ever]

    Me: I don't ******* believe it!!! :woah:

Wife: he had a look and put that exactly where he wanted it to go

Me: first time for everything. :woah:

A point away against the second placed who are unbeaten in 10 at home. That's a decent result no matter how bad our form has been.

    Santa :unknw:

    • Best shown by a chance Toure had when an Indonesian player had fallen over, he had a simple ball about 10 meters that would have put one of our attackers clean through for a one on one. He over-hit it and ruined the chance. Also falling for the same old Asian team diving & time wasting, by giving away stupid fouls to let them fall over and sit on the ground for minutes. 11 minutes stoppage time is probably half what it deserved.
    • Yet again, a failure of pace and power football over technically skilled football in on display in the Olyroos vs Indonesia.  We need to develop skills over pace at all levels
    • Milanovic & Brook should have been on the next flight home at half-time.
