  • The A-League Is Shut Down

    mack

The A-League has been shut down as a result of Australia wide lockdowns & border closures.

A week and a half after the A-League went behind closed doors, the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has forced Governments across the world to issue severe public restrictions on public gatherings, which have lead to suspensions of all levels of sport, which now includes the A-League. Multiple States have closed their borders and asked all but essential services to shut down, with the situation in New Zealand also playing a role with the Wellington Phoenix potentially stuck in Australia for 6 months if they had remained here beyond this week.

The A-League had attempted to go on, including playing games behind closed doors and planning to complete the season in Sydney alone. These games and plans appear all for nought, as the rapid spread forced the closure of the league despite attempts by Fox Sports to threaten to cancel the A-League broadcast deal should it occur. No reopening date has been set due to the rapidly changing situation.

If the closure goes on long enough to see the season ended as it currently stands, there may be a 7 month wait before the top flight of Australian football begins again in this coming October.

So, JP in or out? Personally I think he was OK, but would like to think we could do better. And as I've previously stated, if he gets the gig it should only be for a season. Fairly obvious the club will go local this time, so the list is pretty small.

honestly i would give him another season, we had matches under him where we looked like complete garbage but most matches we looked alright

Let’s say we have a scenario we are looking for another manager, one that’s already in a job. How we do that when leagues will be running past May 31 (current end of 19/20 season) & the European season will go beyond June 30? Bad time to be looking for a new manager or thinking of changing.

When we will finish of A-League, when that happens then I think we should discuss JP in or out. For me he has shown more than Babbel, shown he can get the boys up for the derby but outside that, I’m not quite sure :unknw:

    R. I. P A-league

I don't think it's RIP but i think it's going to look very diifferent for possibly the next few years.

Losing FOX will be a blow but one I personally don't mind, given my disdain of anything Rupert Murdoch is involved with.

I'm sure someone like Optus for instance will step up  to replace them with probably a big haircut in revenue for the foreseeable future. The majority of clubs might to go with the type of budget the Mariners are operating on or even less.

Maybe squads of 20 on close to minimum mandated wage, if that's the price that needs to be paid so be it, probably means that there will be very few if any foreign players involved in the squads.

As long as there's a competition of some sort I will still support it.

Feel free to tell me I'm talking  a load of bollocks.

I'm not going to say you are talking a load of bollox because it's as valid an opinion/assessment as anyone else's. Maybe Optus will step in but they will need to outsource the production. Maybe Fox will come back with a reduced deal? Will Macarthur pull out? Will Western Utd's boutique stadium ever get built? Will there be an overseas interest?

They may do what the EPL is doing and just postpone the games. We may be finishing this season later this year and start the next season as 2021-22

People are assuming they'll use the suspension as a reason to cancel the broadcast contract.

It’s what the league (run by the A-league clubs) is assuming

I bet you'se are all glad we have a functioning academy now!

That's where the majority of our squad may be coming from for the foreseeable future.

We should have played out the rest of the season on FIFA19 with the actual players playing their virtual selves....

    Otherwise #voidtheseason

At least we weren’t beaten by the smurfs when footbal.... sorry I mean, the season, ended.

My first thought was surely the FFA would have some sort of force majeure clause in their contract, but then I remembered this is the same FFA who chose Western United as an expansion team to get extra Fox tv money but got screwed because they weren't Melbourne enough.

I don't think we void the season we have that much of an off season there is some flexibility. Plus earlier this year there was discussion about moving the season to winter. Not saying they should but A-league has such a big off season there is flexibility to play with. Of course assuming A-league still running because the clubs are gonna take big hit.

Hope the club don't start debiting next years memberships from our accounts until there is some certainty around what is going to happen!

highly doubt it. Its an opt in thing, right?
