  • Wanderers To Kick Off Season On October 8th

    mack

The A-League draw was released today with Western Sydney hosting the opening fixture on Thursday October 8th against Brisbane Roar.

Football Federation Australia released their A-League draw earlier this morning and it contained a number of surprise and experimental fixtures. Round 1 begins with the Wanderers against Brisbane, continues with Adelaide vs Melbourne Victory on Friday, the Mariners host Perth, SFC play Melbourne City on Saturday, with Wellington rounding out the first weekend hosting Newcastle on Sunday.

The Wanderers will be playing an away Sydney Derby on the 24th of October in Round 3, other notable earlier fixtures including a Newcastle away trip in Round 5 on the 7th of November, a match in Gosford on Sunday the 29th and hosting Melbourne Victory at Parramatta on Saturday the 12th of December.

The Wanderers run to the finals includes match against Adelaide at home, Melbourne away, Mariners at home with Wellington in New Zealand the last match for the regular season.

The final series kicks off on the weekend of the 15th of April, with the Grand Final on Sunday the 1st of May.

The FFA have rolled out the red carpet for Wanderers' rivals Sydney FC, who have been given 8 NSW games in the first 9 to start the campaign, as well as finally accepting that clubs with Asian Champions League commitments need more time between A-League games.

Special event matches have been scheduled for Christmas Eve, the 24th of December where the Wanderers take on Newcastle in Parramatta, as well as New Year's Day the 1st of January 2016 against Adelaide, at Parramatta.

The Geelong game makes perfect sense to me. It us the Mariners 14th game, which isn't technically a proper home game for any club, plus they will be well compensated. Last year Geelong drew 21k. With those figures, it would be insane not to have a game their every year, and with the Victory not having a community game this season, this is the best solution.

Ummm… No. It effectively gives Victory 14 home games 3 seasons in a row. Mariners should not be able to sell a game to the disadvantage of the 8 other teams involved in the competition.

The good of the league is more important than the result of that match. if there is a country town with 20 thousand willing to attend, it should have a match. If we could find somewhere to take CCM in our off year with 20k turning up, we could have done it too. The option is technically available for all 10 sides. It's a win for the league and much needed cash for CCM.

The Mariners give us the same courtesy too.

By playing their games at Gosford they give us additional home games every season :xnod:

I think its to protect us from their ultras

No, because that atmosphere destroying behemoth in all likelihood wouldn't be good for the league.

What BS, Smurfney FC get 8 out of the first 9 games at home. All that needs to be said now is no excuses! If they can't get past the group stage of the ACL after that easy home schedule that would be embarrassing.

That doesn't mean it would be better for the league long term. It would take some of what is special out of the derby.

The comparison between taking derbies to an atmosphere destroying venue, to what the Victory have done here (in conjunction with CCM) isn't an apt one. In the case of the derby, the alternative to ANZ is a better one. The alternative to this match being in Geelong is not a better one. The alternative would be North Sydney, which would attract no new fans. Geelong would get triple the crowd, with triple the atmosphere than a game at North Sydney. CCM get much needed funds, Geelong gets a game they will attend, the league spreads the game (which should be the intention of the 14th game). Where CCM and Victory play each other is their business. What the other eight clubs and their fans (yes, that means us) think is irrelevant.

    Two things:

    1. Christmas Eve - really??? Don't they realise people have family and friend stuff to do on Christmas Eve? **** idea. We've already got a NYD game that never draws a full crowd.

    3. Community round. I think the FFA should determine the possible locations of all community round games, as part of a strategic plan to grow the game. This could include places in the country or small coastal towns in order to keep football alive there, or in areas that may have teams in the future. The list of possible locations is sent to each club, they request where they want to go, and the FFA makes the final decision of who plays where. All funds made split evenly amongst the teams.

Community round games are just another stupid pr gimmick. In the rural, country areas especially, people only turn up because it's something to do and once it's all done most of them probably show no interest in the aleague again.

We're beyond the travelling circus routine. So what if a team has 14 home games in a season? Big deal...

Community round is tough for Mariners as they have no other suitable stadiums in their catchment area. It's easy for us because we have a bunch of stadiums west of Sydney that can accommodate us. I honestly can't think of one stadium reasonably close to the Central Coast that doesn't encroach on another HAL clubs market.

Still don't think it should be in Victoria though. They should've looked to regional towns in NSW to host it

The Mariners have plenty of other retirement village catchment areas they could tap into for their community round - port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast..... Take your pick!

Yet people from country nsw are mad keen doggies, bunnies, roosters (insert Sydney based nrl club here).

Why? Cause their old man followed them, cause the sharkies played a trial game and held it coaching clinic 20 years ago at the town.

This isn't a pr gimmick. This is a chance to win the loyalty of people for generations.

Not sure what the fuss is about "mid week games"....

The only ones we have are rd1 on a Thursday and the xmas eve game on a Thursday. That's it.

Hosting less than a handful of Friday night games. Everything else is on the weekend.

Arek, I don't understand the problem that you're apparently seeing?

Attending any match on any weeknight Monday to Friday is very hard if you live outside of Parramatta or the Western train line.

Last year I made the effort just to get money's worth this year I have not renewed membership and I am still thinking whether to renew or not.

We have too many matches that occur on weeknights Monday through to Friday.

Last years attendance was pretty poor for matches on days outside of Saturday and Sunday.

Sydney public transport is rubbish and taxis are redicously expensive so attending matches on days other than weekends require effort and I currently am of the thinking that it is not worth the effort. Will be cheaper to buy individual tickets on weekends with existing schedule.
