  • Inept Defence & Referees Cost Wanderers

    mack

A combination of awful defending and awful officiating have ruined any chance the Wanderers had of defeating Melbourne Victory tonight, as they lost 3-0 despite a huge domination of the midfield & possession.

25 minutes of early possession for the Wanderers ended with Victory opening the scoring against the run of play. Artiz Borda making dual mistakes in between another mistake from Dimas. Borda made a suicidal sideways pass to Dimas that he underhit, on the stretch the defensive midfielder had his own weak backpass intercepted by Fahid Ben Khalfallah, after Redmayne made a neat save, Borda had a complete airswung when he was under no pressure and should have cleared. Instead it sat nicely for Berisha, who fired a cross to Khalfallah for a tap-in from 5 yards.

The second half should have seen Western Sydney given the chance to equalise from the penalty spot. Jumpei Kusukami was cut down inside the penalty area by Jason Geria, the only person in the stadium to not realise it was a penalty was the referee, and he somehow decided with Geria getting no ball, and chopping down the attacker, that it was a Victory goal kick.

Victory were then handed a second goal with substitute Jai Ingham heading the ball onto his arm and into the goal past Redmayne. Once again, the referees did their best Stevie Wonder impression and wheeled away without so much as a hint of hesitation in awarded the illegal goal.

Of course, with the Wanderers trying desperately to get back into the match despite the officials deflating them at every decision, they were hit on the counter for a 3rd goal that ended the match as a contest. German import Max Beister came in for his debut, and not long after he had a tap in as no-one in the Wanderers backline bothered tracking his run from the right wing.

All in all, it was another night that promised much initially, but deflated through suicidal defending, and the same old refereeing standards that plague the A-League and prevent it from being taken seriously by the Australian sporting public.

The Wanderers face the FFA's golden child Melbourne City next week on Friday the 18th of November at Homebush Showground, so the officiating is unlikely to improve any time soon. It remains to be see if the defence will do any better.

Hamill and Sotirio should try another sport.

The Australian Premier League in lawn bawls has started up for another season, that seems a bit more fitting for Hamill.

**** the refs Mack I was in the front row we were more or less ineffective for most of the night

Deserved nothing popa has a lot of work to do

Jumpei is most definitely a poor man's Hersi.

The lads at ATB will be reminiscing fondly about Casta in the next episode lol

Have ATB picked their target for this season yet?

Can i suggest Borda and Hamill.

Take your chances. We should've won this game.

A 20 year old was the best player by far in the back 4. I think we've all just learned how important Neville is. We can all blame Hamill for some of the mistakes, but he's not a fullback, he's a CB and shouldn't play anywhere else.

Well done to the away contingent. You won the battle in the stands by a landslide

Can we pull out of the ACL to avoid embarrassment.

be ***** funny if we won it cause Asians can't really deal with European height seen it every game we've played from wq to ACL if the a league had better foreigners we'd simply kick the **** out of every Asian team forever and ever

If our season continues to be this bad we should put all our eggs into ACL. Fix some recruitment problems in Jan and put all efforts to Asia.

............we not no eggs. Just headless chooks.

We'll never have the best teams in Asia as we can't compete financially. But a well drilled team can go far, tactics are different in ACL. Yes, much to fix, but I won't write off the entire season and all competitions just yet.

However, if there is no progress in either competition there will be very serious (and justified) calls for Popa out at the end of the year.

I ment Asians have like a inferiority complex seriously can't remember an Asian team beating an Aussie team with out the aid of a multimillion dollar foreigner if we could match that foreigner they'd never ever come close to our standard

Because we are more of a football national then any Asian nation will ever be but because of nrl we will never live up to that potential

    Link to comment

No because we're the only team in the A-League that's capable of winning it

.........yes because of our great defence and lethal attack ?

Extremely arrogant to expect that you can rip the squad apart and dump it year after year and think you can get away with it with the excuse of "give us time" wtf is preseason for?? ...We should be building a team nucleus and adding minimal enhancements to it where required.

What i have seen on the pitch since round one is amatuer hour in defence across the back..be it poor communication, marking, lack of vision and composure. I'd expect to see mistakes made like that in park football and not in the top level competition by professionals. Own the **** and fix it once and for all. At one stage we had 60 % possession but never looked like taking the lead. The lack of killer instinct has cost us victories many a time before and seems to rear its ugly head every now and again consistently.

    Mack.

Please stop blaming the ref in your match reports.

We were shite and offered nothing.

They weren't much better yet scored 3 goals.

It's not the ref's fault mate.

If the Refs impact our matches I'm writing about it.

    They missed a clear penalty.

    They missed a clear handball.

The first one possibly cost us a goal.

The second one cost us the game.

Wanderers and popa have been a great match but time running out.

    1. Wanderers and board need to explain why they always need to change so many players in the off season. E.g. Castlen and Andrea should never of left.

    2. You can't keep changing so many players and expect to compete in A league and Asia.

    3. Kalac was brought to club for goalkeeper coach he and popa must explain why the club is left with Redmayne are natural disaster and Tyson as back up.

    4. popa knows club is dying for striker how in the world do you end up only with rubbish bulut and Santalab whos been great for club but can't do everything himself.

    5. Why does popa lose more big games then winning.

    6. Today reinforces my point about Popa and his technical ability to influence a game !

Look at this game. At 2-0 down and popa has no plan B.

These young coaches can't change a game.

No variation plan go to team structure to combat when they fell behind.

What tactical change did he make to influence the shift the balance of the game.

    7. He was a great defender but his chopping and changing has defence in shambles disgusting.

    8. In all world football team needs the number 10 the ball player conductor. Wanderers have none disgrace

Yes, the refs had a shocker, but that didn't really matter. VIC gave us possession, sat back and waited for our mistakes - and they came. We should have been 3:0 down at half time.

Baro vs Borda: should be roughly on the same level but are miles apart.

Jumpei vs Beister: did anyone notice the difference between a Japanese JL1 bench player with a full pre season under the belt, and a German BL1 bench player who's been in the country for five minutes?

    We are this bad.

Going to be a long season if this shyte keeps up. I don't think I can take another dicking from the ESFC mob in Jan  :( Ok looking too far ahead, but still.

    Positives from tonight I guess <sigh> .......

Guess Nico showed some good stuff again and could be the stand out.

Nicholls is still getting in good positions and surely he will get his radar back working again soon

We make some nice passey triangle shapes in the midfield

Bulut has a better hair cut

    errmmmm struggling now.....

ooooo one other positive tonight is a few additions to the ignore list  :D
