An early red card to Wanderers Captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley put his team on the backfoot and they were subsequently soundly beaten 2-0 by a rampant Adelaide United.

The key moments coming mere minutes apart, Topor's first yellow coming in the 14th minute after getting caught high up the park only to chop down Marcelo Carrusca after the Reds playmaker had clearly beaten him. 130 seconds later he was off, given his marching orders after handling the ball in an effort to prevent Bruce Djite from getting in behind the Wanderers defence.

Western Sydney resisted the quick short passing of Adelaide for another 20 minutes before the seemingly inevitable breakthrough came. After a challenge from ersatz fullback Jaushua Sotirio against winger Craig Goodwin saw the ball land fortunately at the fleet of the Reds flyer, Goodwin laid the ball off to Sergio Cirio who easily got around Brendan Hamill before cutting back to Carrusca who sidefooted past the helpless Ante Covic.

The game was over as a contest on 54 minutes. Fabio Ferreira worked a one-two with Carrusca, neatly returning the ball to Ferreira with a dink over the static Wanderers defence, the finish a chip into the side netting with Covic once again left stranded.

So complete was the Adelaide domination of the match that Western Sydney had all of two chances on the ball. The first a snapshot from Tomi Juric that went wide, the second a through ball to Nikita Rukavytsya that saw him in on goal but incorrectly called back for an 'offside' despite two Adelaide defenders playing him on.

The statistics bore out this domination, Adelaide having 74% of the possession, the Wanderers managing just one shot, off target to their opponents 26, Adelaide strung together 675 passes with an 89% accuracy to Western Sydney's woeful 136 at only 62% accuracy, 46 crosses to 2, 13 corners to 0.

It was a truly abysmal performance even considering the Wanderers went down to 10 men, and questions will be asked of the mental state of captain Topor-Stanley to allow two schoolboy errors to have occurred in such a short space of time. Adelaide could easily have scored 3, 4 or even more goals had their finishing matched their build-up but in the end they didn't even need that second goal to claim all three points. A massive trip to Morocco looms against the CONCACAF champions Cruz Azul and if they are not to be embarrassed on the world stage Tony Popovic will need to drastically improve his side in just a few short days.

The Wanderers next match is against Cruz Azul in the FIFA Club World Cup on the 13th of December 2014 in Rabat, Morocco. Sydney kick-off time is Sunday 14th of December at 6:30am AEDT.

At this time 2 years ago, if I was asked if I'd take a premiership, 2 grand finals and an ACL trophy to sit last on the table now, I'd take it.

This was always going to be a difficult season but we are in the Club World Cup. No other A-League team has had the right to be there yet. Exciting times still ahead. Bring on Cruz Azul.

Not exactly true.  The smurfs beat some fearsome teams from the likes of New Caledonia and Vanuatu to make it there in 05 (the same year they invented football).

Every supporter of every other a-league team in the country would sell their left nut to be in the position we are in.

******* lol. Last place and playing like ****.

    Yeh, right.

Glad you're happy with no wins this season.

Come on, that's selective - you know what he implies.

No I don't. That is a statement he made. I replied to it. It means what it says.

but it doesnt mean you have to agree with everything hes doing right now. If you see something wrong then speak up

Thoughts on the rotation policy mid to late last season?

Would you trade in the A-League grand final to change our ACL run?

Oh well back in the hotel. We sung our hearts out tonight, that's what I love about the wanderers win or lose. Very disappointed only Golec made the effort to come over at the end of the game.met some great people tonight, true supporters. Oh and that Adelaide grub who ran into the away end punching anyone in sight I hope you get band for life. Lets hope we have better luck in Morocco.COYW

Adam Peacock quoted the FIFA Regs that said that Hypen's suspension will be for the next A-League game not a FIFA game.

thats what i thought as well, but then the commentator was saying that our club wasn't entirely sure if Fifa would carry it on. We need this tournament, its a well needed distraction to our already hectic season, which in truth never ended or started and has just carried on, just like home and away, not that i'm into that :ninja:

Adelaide and MVFC are so far ahead of all the other teams right now. We were never going to win tonight. You could see the way Adelaide pressured us that we panicked every time. The send off was from two moments of panic. Our ball control also really needs to get better. The fact that we always have the lower percentage possession is result of our poor ball control.

It is going to be a tough year, so let's just ride this one out. When you are down, the only way you can go is up.

We have all seen what popa has done over the last 2.5 years . Good recruitment , game plans and most importantly rotations have given us great success . Now things are not going well has he turned into a bad coach ? Suck it up princess we will come good again .

Yea, the tactic to get our captain sent off is a bold move. Didn't pay off on the night.

No, see thats the thing. We should not think like that. Winning the ACL was an achievement of a lifetime but we should be going forward from here not backwards.

If we come last then ppl would look at our ACL trophy as a fluke, we dont want that.

Who cares about what other teams think about our ACL success, you can be proud for the fact that it will probably take another decade before another team has anything similar.

What's your definition on going backwards. Unfortunately things aren't gelling, new players not combining, no proper preseason, not scoring goals despite creating chances, no run of the green. This is just a reality, the way the team has played on the park is promising during our last four home games, we've just got to back them to just get over the line in the second half of the season. Our backs are up against the wall, everyone doesn't think we can do it, it's up to the players on the park to perform and the members in the stands to get behind the team and get them across the line!

I think we have minimal creativity in the middle but I wouldn't be so silly as to call Popa a joke...

Would signing an experienced midfielder like Marcos Flores have added anything to the creativity?

i would quite frankly rather sign justin beiber

To the "Fans" who are complaining about our domestic form and who are willing to trade winning the ACL for a couple of Domestic wins.

Please see a doctor. you are ill.

    Thanks

Not sure I've seen anyone that has said they would trade the ACL for anything else.

All I'm reading is that people aren't happy with our current form.

Yes, of course there will be those nutters that 'want Popa out", but you just ignore those posts.

Dino would be upset that people would suggest this,

trading some wins for an ACL

It is hard to watch. Almost torture, like someone mentioned previously. But the people at the top of this club are no dummies. They know something needs to be done. I'm sure they are working on it right now. Nothing much we can do really.

I think we all know the team is playing **** . The point is I doubt anyone has a better plan than popa to get us out of this bad period . The coach and players are obviously not happy , so what will complaining actually change ?

It is clear now that Ono, Mooy and Polenz have not been adequatly replaced. It needs to be addressed. Also, after the Asia Cup we needs to have a squad only with players who are capable of playing for the WSW, or motivated to do so. I feel a small midseason refresh coming along.

Our squad looks tired and deflated to me, two very lack lustre performances in a row now. The January break for the Asian cup will do the lads a hell of a lot of good I reckon. If we can pick up a win and some points in our last few games before then it would do great things for the players morale. When we come back out to resume the league after the break we will be refreshed and I can still see us making at least 6th spot. I do think that adding another creative midfield option is what the squad it lacking the most at the moment though.
