  • 10 Men Mariners Hold Wanderers To Draw

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers failed to take advantage of their opponents going down to ten men as the Mariners & Wanderers played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Homebush.

With the return of Josh Risdon from international duty  the home side were fieldling a full strength linueup against the Mariners whose team included young gun Daniel De Silva and it was the visitors who struck first. After building an attack on the left flank, Storm Roux found Andrew Hoole with a cut-back, and Hoole fired in a weak shot that Vedran Janjetovic did his best impression of Andrew Redmayne with, dropping it cold in front of Asdrubal who had the simplest goal he'll ever score to make it 1-0.

Despite the setback the home side mounted attack after attack, and they equalised from the penalty spot in the 39th minute. Roly Bonevacia was smashed from behind with a shoulder charge in the box and the referee had no hesitation awarding the penalty. Marquee striker Oriol Riera stepped up and powered a brilliant penalty into the side netting that the Mariners keeper couldn't keep out.

The third goal was awarded to De Silva but could easily have been an own goal for Brendan Hamill, who had subbed on for an injured Michael Thwaite. Hoole put De Silva in own goal and he lifted the ball over Janjetovic with the final touch being smashed into the back of the net by a despairing Hamill.

The Wanderers came back yet again thanks to another less than adequate disaply of goalkeeping. Josh Risdon steamed down the right flank, and fired in a cross to the edge of the 6 yard box, Glover spilled it into the path of Roly Bonevacia who summed up the situation perfectly and emphatically finished past Glover and the diving Mariners defence.

Hoole saw a late red card after a second yellow offence, but the Wanderers weren't able to maintain any level of control over the ball, giving away soft fouls & mishit passes that allowed the Mariners to waste enough time to end the game in a 2-2 draw.

The Wanderers face Sydney FC next weekend on Saturday 21 October.

    Not you too!

@Harv as you said briliant atmosphere at the derby.

it was self created by the fans

Having “the man” tell me when to put my scarf up what to sing ain’t atmosphere.

    Lol Stringer...

Just like Carns...with his La Banda comments...you aren't playing fair.

You're comparing apples and oranges here.

Are you honestly saying that the majority of our home games are accompanied by anything like the pre-game frenzy of excitement and anticipation of a derby????

Half a 30,000 to 40,000-strong crowd being opposition supporters......the Cove and the RBB chanting at each other etc ...

    The atmosphere is naturally electric.

That happens 3 times out of 27 rounds.

For the rest....With an Away bay of 30 opposition supporters and a crowd these days of maybe 12, 000 people sitting and chatting pre-game there is NO  build up of atmosphere....which carries into the game til there's hopefully a goal.

Those of you who only ever hang out in the RBB, or close by, really have no idea what it's like for the other 90%. You ought to go for a wander...to check it out sometime.

    I've done it. It's horrible.

That doesn't mean I want to try to artificially create or test out songs till it is better. That would be just as horrible.

Yeah but you can use the derby argument the other way. During non-derby games (and unfortunately sometimes during derbies) the "stands" get into it after a goal but quickly go back to sitting on their hands, unless the game and energy keeps them up or there is the "naturally electric" vibe as you say. So picking out a walk-out song isn't going to keep them going when there is 10k at Spotless v Wellington. Ever been to an Eels game? Noise and everyone on their feet waving flags and yelling when the players come out. Then kick off and... nothing. That's what we'll get.

A walk-out song isn't going to sustain the atmosphere for regular games.

I have even picked a walk out song and modified the words for it (see other) thread I didn’t get a single like. Unless it’s The Theme from Sparta FC modified to The Theme from Western Sydney, I’m out

I still hold that playing some Cold Play song over a PA while holding scarfs above your head has about all the emotional authenticity of a Gwenyth Paltrow film

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
