  • 4-1 Win For 10 Man Wanderers

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers halted a streak of 6 games without a victory by punishing the Central Coast Mariners 4 goals to 1.

Blake Powell, who cannot stop scoring against the Wanderers no matter who he is playing for, opening the scoring for the home side in the 5th minute. Storm Roux broke down the right flank using his electric pace, and his cross back into the centre found Powell. His first time strike took a deflection off Scott Neville to beat Jerrad Tyson.

The Wanderers were back level instantly. Jumpei Kusukami cutting inside onto his right foot and yet again the deflection did the work for the striker as the ball looped over Paul Izzo and into the side netting at the back post.

On the half hour mark Nico Martinez put the Wanderers in the lead. Mitch Nichols delivered a pinpoint cross over the penalty spot, and the Red & Black marquee Nico Martinez flew through the air like a dart to throw himself at the ball, his header whistling past Izzo for a 2-1 lead.

It was 3-1 five minutes after the break, Scott Neville steaming along the byline, his cross hammered into the legs of Jake McGing and beat Izzo all ends up.

Western Sydney were reduced to 10 men with a contentious call from Kris Griffiths-Jones. Trent Buhagiar ran in on goal but his attempted chip hit Tyson, who then clattered into the striker. Despite the ball flying away, the referee deemed it a foul from Tyson, then sent off the keeper for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Mariners coach Paul Okon made a raft of changes designed to increase the firepower, but all it seemed to accomplish was giving the 10 men of the Wanderers more time and space in the midfield & final third, super sub Brendon Santalab added to his legacy by finishing the game off as a contest in the 87th minute, taking one touch to put the ball at his feet then powering the second into goal.

The Western Sydney Wanderers face Melbourne Victory next week at ANZ Stadium, on Saturday the 10th of December at 7:50PM.

Great game to watch. Really could have seen more goals.

We were better in defence, but there's still room to improve. Exposed by pace a number of times, and the cut back that they scored from worked well for them, somehow finding unmarked attackers too often in the first half. Stayed compact after the red and made it near impossible for them to go forward.

Nico just keeps getting better. Mitch toiled hard all night. He will find a goal soon (how did he miss that one???). Nice to see a bit of luck go our way with Jumpei getting a deflection and the own goal too (It really seems like we rarely get the rub in those instances). And Santa just loves to score against the sauce bottles doesn't he?

Nice to get 3 points. Well done to the travelling peeps. Wish Fox would turn the mics up so we can hear more of the crowd. The brass band gets hard to listen to.

    Fantastic confidence building win.

Tyson deserved no more than a yellow if that.

What are people thinking of Pinatares post-Popa treatment? As it stands he has the second most completed passes for the team (behind Dimas, who is leading the league significantly) and also has the second highest pass completion. A definite improvement from what we saw in the first few rounds.

Tyson a yellow, BS that Mitch got a yellow for arguing against Tyson's red...great work from the boys after going down to 10

I'd still prefer us playing with 1 defensive midfielder not 2, but he's doing a lot better.

For me this was Pinatares' best game. Very good passing game today, will be interesting against Vic..

Last week we were so much better with Baccus moving forward - but credit to him getting the treatment and coming back from it

Yep I thought this as well, he really seemed to find his rhythm tonight and did well.

There was a few worrying times before half time we got ripped apart, either Nevvie or Clisby were too central as the overlapping runs killed us.Outside of this it's all good.

NIchols, Jumpei and Martinez were in sync and although it's against the Mariners it looked really good at times.

Tyson tad unlucky but he did his job and protected that 3-1 lead and in the end we were pretty comfortable

Found some form ahead of a revenge job on Victory.

Oh and Damn Utd how good was Bulut  :P

That's a super win, a very gutsy performance. Every player tonight ran their tits off from start to finish. I can't ask for any more than that. So proud of the lads. The way we stepped up when we lost Tyson, it was as if the Mariners went down to 10 men. We defeated Kris Griffiths Jones too.

I reak of beer and sweat, what another ripper trip!!!
