  • 7 Goal Thriller Ends With Santa Winner

    mack

The Wanderers survived a late fright to jump 5 points clear in the Premiership race with a 4-3 win against Melbourne City tonight.

Western Sydney came into the 1v2 contest knowing they had yet to really hit their attacking stride, and City were on the back foot early as key central defender Patrick Kisnorbo went off with an injury. 10 minutes in Vidosic had the first real chance of the game, as a cross from Nichols took a slight deflection by Osama Malik that knocked the ball into Vidosic's chest.

Bruno Fornaroli should have opened the scoring in the 12 minute after being played in by Harry Novillo. Instead of the clinical finishing people had come to expect, he instead put a toepoke just wide.

Mitch Nichols made them pay, as he & Bridge combined on the half-hour mark. Bridge took receipt of a neat pass from Andreu, before laying a cute through ball for Nichols, who took a touch to evade the defence before rolling the ball past Thomas Sorensen. The 1-0 lead was taken into the break but the general feeling was that it would be a matter of time before more goals would flow for the league leaders.

The Bridge & Nichols combination doubled the Wanderers lead, this time with Nichols turning provider, his break down the right flank turning the City defence around. Bridge used a Vidosic run as a decoy, stopped in his tracks to receive a cutback from Nichols before blasting a powerful strike into the top right corner.

The 3rd was another Nichols & Bridge special, Nichols chipping Sorensen who had flown out to the edge of the area but missed completely, Bridge guaranteeing the goal with a tap-in from a meter out.

Melbourne City are a team noted for their individual brilliance in attack, and they began a comeback through Novillo who took on Topor-Stanley and finished with a pin-point shot to the back post, the second from Fornarolli who scored another of his trademark no lift curling shots into the corner.

Anthony Caceres, who joined Melbourne City on loan from global powerful Manchester City killed his new sides chances of taking anything from the game with his dismissal in the 85th minute, two yellow cards accrued from awful challenges.

Brendan Santalab gave Western Sydney more breathing room with his 89th minute tap-in, Romeo Castelen breaking the static City defensive line before working the angles for a cut-back to the unmarked Wanderers striker. City scored a late consolation through Erik Paartalu, who got the faintest of touches onto a City free kick, but it was too little too late for the his side.

The Wanderers head down to Melbourne next weekend for a Saturday clash with Melbourne Victory.

Faaaark me, we can't lose focus like that and let three in. Santa saved our butts, which is crazy as we dominated the game.

Now that I got that off my chest, what a flippin' game :woah:   We played so well except for those lapses.

That ref was the absolute pits  :nono:

    Was Dario's offside offside?

Top of the table baby! :woah:

    From other thread...

As much as we need the Goal diff, conceding **** goals should mean we dont get cocky for next week. We lost total focus and respect for the ball and got punished.

Who ever did that flick pass in the middle of the field at 3-0 up was almost the cause of a loss. We beat victory and nix we will be in a very good spot to take the title.

    Dario?

Guess so, I don't complain about much at all but that was very unnecessary. Especially when city are top scorers on the counter attack. Dario had a good game I thought, but that was a lapse in judgement or complacency. Without watching the replay tha twas the fault of the first goal and the momentum lead to the 2nd.

Although, I'll take first place however it comes.

    did i see correctly,

john cant coach complaining to the ref about the game at the end?

    fmd.

do you want the ref to put the ball in the net for you as well as give every single contest as a foul!

we seem to cop bad call after bad call, i wonder if foxtel interviewed him and asked if he was paid by the man city owners?

oh, and we still beat their asses!

Yes Tuco. You did see that correctly. That ass wipe had the audacity to whinge at the referee after the whistle.

Not to talk Baccus down (I rate the kid and he will do serious damage in Asia for us next year ;-) ), but the difference was Andreu coming off. He kept Mooy quiet. Such a shame he was on a yellow and had to come off before he could pick up another one.

Redmayne scares me too much. I would like to see what Reddy can do. I do t blame for the second goal (that was timed to perfection), but without the benefit of a replay goals one and three are on his shoulders.

Jamo and Butters are machines, Fathead is having a golden season, Neville still can't cross, our Spanish spine must be retained for next season, and why the **** does Romeo never track back in defence? Sotirio has the last touch of a crippled donkey but he ran his guts out tonight and his efforts put a lot of pressure on the City back line.

This game had it all though. Fast pace, goals aplenty, a touch of controversy and lots of villains to boo at until my throat was sore. Less said about the reffing the better. Assistant on the western touch line had a good game though. Best one I've seen run the line in front of me all season.

An atmosphere in Wanderland to rival a derby. ★★★★★

What a scummy bunch City have become. Fornaroli taking cheap shots and then abusing our ball kid, Novillo - say no more and their clueless leader just entering the playing field when he felt like it. Then they didn't even go over to their travelling fans who'd come from interstate after the game. Typical rotten rich behaviour. I lost a lot of respect for that mob tonight.

Can't lose respect for a bunch of cûnts that never had it in the first place.

Will post later in more detail but loved watching the dirty shîtstains lose even with all the help they got from that knob gobbler ref.

Yarrachester City are as fake as the cock you see on Dirk Diggler at the end of Boogie Nights...

    A few points:

    - Referee, what an absolute horrific game. I thought we couldn't get worse than Willams & KGJ, well then this clown came along. Completely unacceptable to have this level of refereeing at the top level in Australia.

    - Top performance for majority of the game but need to fix those lapses

    - I was worried in the first half that it was going to be ground hog day, so many chances but not enough goals. Defensively I loved our shape, our pace, our intensity & kept key players quiet. Fantastic!

    - Second half was so happy that we managed to score 2 goals so early & THAT WE BURRIED OUR CHANCES!!! It was an interesting one because those two goals came when city were pushing very hard for the second goal.

    - 70 minutes onwards we just slightly switched off. We stopped holding possession, we weren't making city doing the work & leaving ourselves very open. That second goal was complete class, what a finish!

    - Some here blaming the subs but I feel they were spot on. Sotirio hasn't started in months, Andreu was on a yellow & Vidosic had red lined. They needed to be made.

    Players:

    - Bridge & Nichols were on another level

    - The rest of the players don't deserve to be singled out because they were all fantastic but: Sotirio had an okay game but the work rate he brings to our side is fantastic (hopefully he can work on the side of his game when he has the ball in possession), Castelen has learnt how to pass but can't score & Redmayne had a good game (minor spill in the first half but he wasn't at fault for any of the goals)

    On City:

    - Incredible they persist with this style which is pretty much "we will score more goals than you" with defence optional

    - They struggled with Malik & Klisby playing in the back 3, this combined with the high line & the inexperience left them so open

    - One key aspect of there last game in Melbourne was how high Kisnorbo came up to break up play high up the field to stop the counter. His early injury hurt them.

    - Credit for scoring those goals, bits of #individualbrillance by Mooy, Novillo & Fornaroli who we managed to keep quiet for the majority of the match.

    - Thanks to Novillo for firing up Alberto & getting the crowd into it ;)

    RBB

    - Immense tonight

    - The chant selection was superb & great job of picking the right chants to get the crowd involved

    - Good job on handing out sheets with glorious lyrics on them pre game. Glorious worked the best it has in weeks & perhaps the only thing we need to fix is getting the PA to play the instrumental in time with the chant, that was a bit of a fail

What a weird game. I know we won 4-3, but why does it feel like we lost.

We had them in out pocket at 3-0 and then let them in. Just lapses in concentration, you just cant allow players like Novillo or Fornaroli any time and space to shoot because they will bury you. We really should have made things easier on ourselves. Not to worry we did get the win but it a was a hear attack getting there.

sotirio looked much better on the right wing tonight.

credit to city, only the smurfs would have shown that much fight against us 3-0 down away from home.

that refereeing was horrible, a couple of times he put his hand up the wrong way in the first half and actually gave us a free kick or two.

Sotirio was absolute garbage tonight. He offered nothing and was a liability.

    And we won despite him

I must've watched a different game then, the Sotirio I saw didn't stop running all night and had his best game for us to date.

He might have been running all night but this is not Athletics. The problem was when he actually got the ball... and then lost it... and then lost it... and then lost it.... and then lost it.... all friggin night! His performance accentuated the disappointment of Golgol not making the squad.  It was good to see Nichols back to his early season form... great game. Andreu and Dimas (with a few hiccups)... brilliant. Lets hope we can sign them for next season. Wish we had our own Fornaroli... that goal was pure class. Reminded me of ADP in his prime. He must have shifted just millimetres to the right, no back lift, ping. No-one's fault... a thing of beauty. Novillo's was well taken but the midfield cough up was ugly. Vidosic is still a worry. Something not right there (apart from not being a winger). He doesn't look a happy chappy.... and also looks in need of a good feed of the edible variety!
