  • Alberto & Bridge Deliver Three Points For Christmas

    mack

A comfortable 2-0 win for the Wanderers against Newcastle at Parramatta Stadium saw the Wanderers keep first place in the A-League for Christmas.

The first goal came minutes before half time through Alberto Aguilar, Scott Jamieson launched a free kick from the right wing deep to the back post, Aguilar rose completely unmarked to knock a header into the pitch and towards goal. Jets keeper Mark Birighitti made a horribly mess, spilling the ball over the goal line to open the scoring.

Western Sydney had full control of the match and sealed the three points in the 70th minute. Dario Vidosic fired a shot that Birighitti palmed away, with a rebound from Vidosic falling to Bridge, he worked space and shot past the keeper with a crisp finish.

Newcastle had few chances, no-one bar David Carney providing any sort of threat to the league leaders, who have gone 5 clear of Brisbane at the top of the A-League.

    Guys,It's Christmas. Get off WSF.

Mate, you're right, it's Christmas. And like many others I'm eating and drinking a crap load today so will have multiple, long toilet breaks. If not trawl wsf, what else would I do while I powder my nose.

Wait did I read right Carney actually mooned the east stand, please let there be a pic

He went one better than Thwaite that's For sure.

    And no pic thank fûck

We are very lucky that someone with a decent camera (think Eric Berry) wasn't based in the East stand otherwise we would have a high resolution shot

On the game, I haven't had the chance to watch it but I've been piecing it together from highlights & match reports:

    - I love that we are dominating games but I don't like that we aren't converting our chances. It doesn't help when we have a striker that can't score (strikers haven't prospered in our team so we rely on goals on the 3 players behind him but he is struggling to find the back of the net is just a fact) & Castelen who causes defenders so many issues but has issues converting his shots into goals. It's funny that our most consistent best performing player is Mark Bridge, who would have thought? Don't get me wrong, it's great we are playing like this but I want us to be more clinical earlier in matches.

    - Rub of the green. Had it being last year, the two 1v1 chances they had in the first half would have been scored, the handball (which I don't be considered to be one) would have been given a penalty & the offside would have been let go. Before we know it, they could have scored 4 possibly 5 goals! Last year that would have happened with pretty much every decision going against us!

    - The one weakness I've noticed Brisbane, Perth (not so much) & Newcastle exploit really well is the combination of a counter attack in the form of a long pass which splits the two CB's. To me it is a bit concerning especially if a more clinical/ruthless striker is taking those opportunities (fornarolli or Berisha/FBK/Barba or Henrique/McClaren) just from the number of opportunities we are giving up. Playing a high line creates this dilemma but can mitigated by a keeper who can sweep well.

    - Redmayne, really saved our arses on a couple of occasions this game with a few nice saves just lucky that his one stuff up yesterday didn't lead to a goal. I really don't know what to think about him, as long as he does the simple stuff right I will be happy but I just hope that he doesn't cost us too many games this season.

Some thoughts while the kids impatiently wait for Mrs lloydy to surface so they can open presents....

    - redders was very good. So much for reddy taking away his confidence or whatever. If he doesn't make that one on one save then they would have parked the bus and result would have been different. He also seems to genuinely enjoy interacting with the fans. As I said after last week - he makes decision mistakes but so do all keepers. He is doing a good job for us. On a related topic - bouzanis has packed it in - stuffed around for most of the warm-up.

    - for someone who was bought in with a rep as a poacher piovaccari sure struggles when chances fall to him. Composure of an u/12s striker. Only consolation last night was that there big money striker was even worse. For next season we need to make Andreu the marquee and bump up wages for Dimas and Alberto so we can keep all three.

    - popa has done an excellent job getting the most out of guys like Neville, pepper etc. In a capped league these guys are critical.

    - millicic was there last night. Anyone know if he was there in a socceroos capacity or if he was just hanging out?

Bouzanis... on the evidence of the warm-up he's an even worse crosser of the ball than Neville (if that is possible!)

Boxing Day, feels like we should have a game......... growing up in the UK Boxing Day means game day.

The ESFC chunts get it. Next year ESFC get xmas eve and we get a home fixture today please........

Actually how about a Boxing Day derby game one season?

good idea, but couldn't work. Neither club would want to give up ticket sales

    Meh...

Should make the first derby game October, the second Boxing Day or New years Day and the last one in late March.

WSW should have a big Boxing Day game, **** even the weather gods think we have a game today with thunderstorms forecast, but then I am being a miserable chunt this morning because I have no game, will have to make do with watching a few games from out of the UK tonight.

    • I hope that the new tradition of playing on xmas eve died with this game.

Kudos to Nick Banda for his energetic solo performance.

Neville is twice the player he was three months ago.

Pity that Castelen's second half run didn't result in a goal.

Bridgey is the ultimate A-League player.

    Redders is great.

I now have officially lost faith that Pioviccari will come good.

    The Spanish imports are fantastic.

Please Mack, can we have a "Not Like" button?

Popa said another 4 to 5 games we will see the best of him. I wonder if popa is smokescreening and his lined his replacement.

Why would he play him for the full 90 then?  Wouldn't he be slowly phasing him out of the team rather than increasing his game time if this were the case?  When he wasn't happy with our imports last year he gave them no game time at all.

I'm hoping for him to get better throughout the second half of the season. I'll support him while he's here, but hopefully we can find an Asian striker.

    Ahmed Khalil...

    Out of the question then.

We don't operate under that currency.

Yeah I don't think we could match those. That is pretty much going to be the case with any Asian striker, which leaves us to find an Australian.

If not, my favourite candidate is the chunky guy from DPR Korea.

Im keeping the faith with Pio, although I'm starting to feel like one of those guys with a Sandwhich board on going on about how Jesus will return and the rapture is coming next week. Then still believing it when another week goes by and it doesn't happen

The strange thing is he looks so strong on the ball when he's not in position to shoot, when he is in position it's like he rushes things.  Serious confidence issue?

I just feel he just needs to score one decent goal (that isn't given to him on a platter) & things will change! Goal scoring is this guys bread & butter, yet he is struggling to find the back of the net. For me, as long as the team is performing, we are scoring & we get the 3 points every week then we shouldn't be overly concerned.

Popa saying we won't see the best of him for 4/5 matches is just a way on not putting too much pressure on him. The last thing we need is him putting too much pressure on himself to score, then he will try to take an opportunity instead of passing or try to take a shot when we should look at retaining possession. I still think we can get more out of him in terms of goal output.

Pio had one shocker that he should've buried. He also had a very decent effort on goal that was well stopped by Birra. There were also a couple of good runs, a decent header, 2 offsides that I can recall (haven't watched the game on my DVR yet), and he was physically imposing in the box.

Of course I want him to score a bucket load of goals. But FFS this is a team sport. If you want to wank over an o/s goal scorer go watch Holosko...you know...the bloke up front of an attack that has 9 less goals than us.

Fed may not be giving us value for every red cent of his marquee pay, but as long as he does his best and is part of a WSW crew I'll back him 100%.

    • Without trying to be an immensly massive knob, and I say this to someone who's opinion I respect a lot on here, thats absolutely not true. Theres a large pile studies on the impact of player performance post ACL injuries. I'm happy to have discussion about it thats evidence based, though the post game may not be the best place. We are here solely to bemoan our current standings aren't we?  That all said, I dont think Tate has any real future with his current output. He's been back at it for a season and is only showing decline
    • Not sure.  Will decide at the last minute but doubtful after todays performance.
    • With all due respect, I can't remember Tate ever putting in a decent 90min.
