  • Andreu 1 - Andreu 1

    mack

Wanderers midfielder Andreu Guerao Mayoral scored a brace in Adelaide, unfortunately for his new club however, the first was into the back of his own net.

Andreu scored at the same end, one in each half, the first as a result of a Tarek Elrich run down the left flank. The Australian international fullback's cutback deflected off the head of Mayoral, leaving Andrew Redmayne no chance to make a save.

Once again a failure to apply a finish or killer final ball kept the Wanderers supporters on edge, as Piovaccari, Castelen and Sotirio in particular butchered spectacular chances to provide either a goal or an assist, Sotitio with the worst of the lot when he blazed over from point blank range when he should have been able to score or set up a team-mate to do so.

Defensively the Wanderers were much improved on their loss to Brisbane, giving Adelaide little time or space to work with. Craig Goodwin had the shot of the night for Adelaide, a smashing long range effort that Andrew Redmayne produced a miracle save against, turning the ball onto the crossbar with his fingertips. The save kept his side in the contest before they put the game back on level terms.

The stirring second half comeback was sealed after Andreu pounced on pass from Tarek Elrich deep inside the Red's penalty area that didn't even make it out of the box before being intercepted. The Spanish midfielder skipped easily past a forlorn challenge before he blasted a shot that Adelaide keeper John Hall wasn't able to keep out..

Just met someone with an FC top boarding same plane leaving Adelaide. Asked him WTF did you travel to see us pre Derby. Turns out he's from my home area Port Kembla and supports FC for a personal family player connection. Weird. We need to wrestle Wollongong into our red and black darkness and away from smurf fairy land.

Need to get Central West and further afield out of the Dynamo Woy Woy empire...if it's between Strathfield and the SA/NSW border as the crow flies it should be ours

I'm suggesting we put federico in a different paddock and give him the silent treatment before he goes back to Italy with mental problems

shut the **** up and get a life, i never seen someone so pathetic and obsessed

Sotorio needs to be dropped for the derby, he's had copious amounts of chances to prove himself, but the guy just can't finish to save his life. Fml.

Bridge is meant to be back. With Bridge and Vidosic, you can almost guarantee Sotirio will only be on the bench (if at all).

    @riva

"I think the team would improve if we played more defensively and on the break."

Of course you do. You are going to have a great time this season. Only more 25 rounds to go where the WSW will do the exact opposite, and at least another 25 opportunities to remind us of your preference.

"Fix the f*****g defence up and things will flow from there. If its not addressed we could be embarrassed yet again in the derby."

Was that a leftover from the commentary about the Roar game? If I counted correctly then ADE forced one save of Redmayne. But I forgot, "Adelaide were useless".

As you seem so fond of dark colours, try this: http://search.mitre10.co.nz/hardware/Paint-Specials

So why is it that all success we have had has been undeniably built on defensive solidity not namby-pamby tiki-taka bullshit.

Because you ADD addled idjit the squad was built up for season one at exceedingly short notice, with the primary short term aim of not looking like incompetent morons. That they not only did better than that but actually took the whole A-League by storm was just as muchdue to being a one off miraculous season where and when things that could go right did (e.g. Covic saving that pen against Heart, Ryan skying a pen against us up at Gosford, Shannon's free that levelled things up in the last derby), as it was the second man system Popa worked. Season Two was similar, with the added complexity of Spira, who added a more transitional phase style out of the back (which shows this Season Four system is nothing new, just more aggressive in its focus). And you can't tell me the likes of Saba and Adeleke weren't added to our line up to replay the hoof it and hope stuff you seem to worship.

You bullshit on and on about our defence last night having more holes than a string back, yet look at the stats: Adelaide had only 7 shots of which only 2 were on target. When you look back at the very same fixture in season 2012/13 guess how many shots Adelaide had? 6...with 3 on target.

So, a defence you reckon was useless had one more shot on it than the one you lionise in the exact same fixture at a similar time in the relative squads developments? Seriously, get a clue FFS.

Oh, and BTW, the guys last night got in 12 shots, versus the 2012 team's effort of 10...but hey, those who played back then had hardly played together right? :ninja:

And you claim we are starting to look like Melbourne Heart (they weren't City back then noob) under Aloisi? After two games? So let me guess...you can find the empirical evidence on 180 minutes of regular time to compare and contrast us with Heart's effort back in 2012/13? In that case I look forward to your evaluation of how Newcastle are starting to look like Victory last season having won away against Wellington.

Do us all a favour...learn to think more than beyond what you saw on the highlights reel at the end of season one, and try and put your microcephalic noggin into the task of thinking more than just 'we played like shite' posts. The real world of football is far more nuanced and needs a more contextualised understanding than your dribble. But hey...keep posting; the net needs its continuous feed of nongs & noobs to fill up bandwidth.

Oh manfred. You made me giggle. A+

How will Riva respond to facts? I wait patiently

Jeez Manfred you really know how to hurt a guy ! (?). Like water off a ducks back.

What from my non-abusive posts would elicit such a stream of furious , vitriolic , abuse filled piece of invective ?

I wasn't even going to bother to respond but giggling braad is anxiously waiting for my response so......

Enlightening to know you appear to consider our Premiers Plate triumph a fear-filled and arse filled fluke. So along those lines , because our ACL success was built on counter attack and in last game in Saudi Arabia ultra-defensive tactics to get the needed 0-0 , should we consider leaving the star off the crest.

Ah, facts , facts.....have never advocated "hoof and hope" but a preference for a counter-attacking system of play based on a tactically adaptable and well-drilled game to win games. It's a system used by some of the top teams in the world. Chelsea and Real Madrid (coached by Ancelotti) for example have had success in Europe with this system. Mourinho who has had some success has stated "If you don't play counter attack you are stupid" As an aside , Spain the masters of tiki-taka did not progress in the last World Cup.

I just post opinions and if these opinions prove to wrong , I am happy to be wrong - what's the big deal. They are just opinions like thousands of others on these forums. Some are proved right , some wrong.

Finally, and I bring this up with reluctance. Your insults such as nongs and noobs are I find more amusing than offensive , except for one. Your reference to "microcelaphic noggin " I find shameful and disturbing. Microcephaly is just a horrid, horrid birth defect and disability which affects poor unfortunate kids for the whole of their lives. To use this term in the context of a discussion about a game of football is just abhorrent and makes one wonder as to the point of posting any opinions at all.

Coaches return wiser to revitalise the A-League

    Date

    Craig Foster
    Football columnist

Early signs from season eleven of the A-League are outstanding that the competitiveness of the league is back. Very likely better than ever, as failing clubs are revitalised and look to be a significant threat again.

Principal among them the Asian Champions Western Sydney Wanderers, Mariners, Jets and Roar.

Last year morphed into the top six and the rest, but not this campaign, no chance.

The Wanderers survived a harrowing year of boom and bust more akin to real estate than football, purged an extraordinary number of players who had served the club magnificently, and have emerged chrysalis-like a completely different beast.

Credit to Tony Popovic who has been true to his word in espousing both evolution and a philosophical change of emphasis, learning from last year that an inability to control games when necessary, either when leading or under pressure, particularly away from home can be debilitating, even terminal.

The Wanderers' first-up loss to Brisbane falsely set alarm bells ringing courtesy of several uncharacteristic set piece concessions yet, these moments of madness aside, the signs were evident and exciting.

More shots, more passes in the opposing half, more final third entries. No wonder Popovic appeared completely calm in the build-up to the Adelaide match. His team can now provide a very different kind of resistance to ball possession teams and should become proficient at manipulating how they want to play between the two modalities.

Three Spanish imports go a long way towards changing the way of playing expeditiously and Andreu Mayoral, in particular, looks a highly polished footballer. Such a player, as we have seen with Isiais at Adelaide, brings tremendous confidence to those behind him when in possession and can coach others to make better decisions. Already the Wanderers look far more assured.

When I was in the states last October, wore my home jersey (when it fit) down the lobby heading out when someone called out WDYSF, went over said a quick hello - guy from Parra, caught the tour bus to Universal Hollywood....down the back near the Jurassic Park ride when this guy from the Riff came out of the crowd in the S1 away jersey straight away asking if I was a westie, we both talked about how we both were missing the derby, and ACL home final, he gave me a hug then left....

Not as exciting or as far afield...however yesterday whilst shopping in the Riff took the elevator up from the Red Cow end car park...hopped in with my white season 2 polo..there were three young fellas, one in a wheelchair, all wearing new S4 away shirts. For one brief and shining moment there was an elevator at Westfield Penrith that was 100% Wanderers lol

The Gong should have their own team, and games between them and WSW would be epic.

public transport wise that trip takes like 3 hours, amazing view on the train though but i really want them to have their own team, plus they can be rivals with central coast because water i guess

The Gong should have their own club. The magnetic pull of Little Chicago Cringila would compel me to pop out of 56 over 53 down south. Couple of young gun WSW supporters who live in Adelaide were offered accommodation Parra way if they could make it east for a game and in Melbourne for the Victory clash in February. Adelaide was a reminder the Wanderers family isn't geographically challenged and warmly embraces distant cousins with the hospitality of home. I only fear the consequence of an RBB gentrification.

Yeah the South Coast Wolves have changed their name back to the Wollongong Wolves, all signs are pointing towards them being in the A League next season or the one after.

    i hope so

Yes this is the way forward I believe. An area of Proud Football history once again which requires revitalising. No point keeping a whole region out of our game when there is a club ready to go. They will attract fans from The Shire down to the far south coast and even inland into Canberra. The more I think about it the more I like it.

The A-League is going stale. (Drop in crowd figures, drop in TV statistics, drop in memberships for most clubs).

The FFA need to do something to re-invigorate it; and the Wolves would have to be the first item on the agenda.

After reading this thread, it looks like it might be time for another how quick we are to sack a bloke thread, this time focused on our marquee man.

I can't wait for Federico to starting scoring, just so I don't have to read 5 pages of f*cking dribble from people who have no f*cking clue.  :xnod:

He best pull his finger out, or I'll have to give consideration to sacking him from my fantasy team.

Pretty sure he had a hand in that quick one-touch counter attack that Nichols should have scored if it weren't for Elrich. Pio laid off the ball with his back to goal on the halfway line.

His best work to date has been on the half way line, holding up play and laying it off to the likes of Jamieson. He had no service this game, yet again.

Our style has changed again and it appears our wingers and midfield are getting into good goal scoring opportunities, much like in S1.
