  • Another Grand Final Defeat, In Adelaide

    mack

Adelaide United have lifted the A-League Championship after a 3-1 win at Adelaide Oval tonight.

The Western Sydney Wanderers never looked like winning, handing the initiative to the home side from early in the contest, with a brief flurry of activity in the second half not enough to even draw level.

Bruce Kamau opened the scoring in front of 50,000 spectators, taking advantage of seriously inept defending from Scott Jamieson to turn in Marcelo Carrusca's cross unmarked. it got worse for the visitors after half an hour, as Nikolai Topor-Stanley gave away a silly foul just outside the box. Isaias stepped up to the dead ball and curled it over the wall, and into the top left corner of Andrew Redmayne's goal, a striker that no keeper in the world would have stopped.

The most unlikely of sources gave the Wanderers a sniff, on the hour mark Santalab combined with Castelen, the striker laying the ball with a flick into the path of Scott Neville, who unleashed a stunning outside of the foot half-volley that flew into the back of the net.

While the Wanderers huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser, it was Adelaide who eventually blew the house down, substitute Pablo Sanchez taking advantage of a horrible error by Kearyn Baccus, gifting the ball to Sanchez inside the box, his shot was past Redmayne and his poor attempted save, clinching the Championship on the stroke of 90 minutes.

After coming from 3 behind last week against the Roar, Tony Popovic was outcoached, and his team outplayed, as Adelaide swarmed the Wanderers midfield, giving Dimas & Andreu no time on the ball. The Wanderers attack went silent once again, as Castelen reverted to his usual 5 touches then lose the ball ways, Mark Bridge might as well have been wearing a cloaking device, and Mitch Nichols could easily have been yanked off the pitch before half-time, and even though he got through to the break, only lasted 10 minutes after it.

The off season promises yet another clear out. It is time to let Mark Bridge & Topor-Stanley go after their Asian pay cheques, forigeners Alberto Aguilar, Andreu, Castelen & Piovaccari are all set to leave the club in the weeks to come, U21 players Liam Youlley, Shayne D'Cunha & Daniel Alessi are also up on the chopping block, short term signings Matt Sim & Liam Reddy have not done much to expect a full season renewal, and Golgol Mebrahtu will be cut after making no mark on the A-League after 3 seasons.

The Wanderers will play next season at Sydney Olympic Park, as Parramatta Stadium is demolished for a 3+ year new build. Despite the Grand Final loss the club will play a 3rd Asian Champions League campaign.

Wtf was that positioning by redmayne for the third goal??? Absolutely awful. Can't believe that went in.

Football aside, the people of Adelaide are by far some of the ugliest people I've seen in my life.

There was a cutie bartender at the Cathedral - the brunette one with braces. She smiled at me.

That was heartbreaking. They wanted it more than us. As far as the season goes, we had a good one considering what happened in S3.

One day I will see us win a HAL Grand Final.

Don't be greedy, we won an Asian Championship, that's worth at least ten GF losses

I'm not sure if I could sit through another seven of those... but true. I'd rather a gold star, than a silver one.

Adelaide were the better side - some ugly scenes towards the end with bottles thrown and fights breaking out near where I was sitting, obviously the tarp wasn't wide enough, but... yeah. I got out of there quick smart to rush to the taxicabs...

Adelaide used the one proven tactic that beat WSW this season - the high press. They suffocated us. Fair play to the team, they deserved it.

I love this club. I've spent more money travelling the country to watch WSW than you'd imagine but you can't put a price on passion. I wouldn't have it any other way. Win or lose we will always follow you âš«

..... fair play to the team , what the faark does that wimpy statement mean ?

Why didn't our coaches expect this tactic or react and change tactics or make early substitutions to counter it - no just keep plugging away in the usual predictable stuff and wait to get sucker punched with quick break or set piece - and blame everything on the players.

Blacktown International Sports Park. Eastern Rd, Rooty Hill NSW 2766.

There you go champ, that's the address of the training ground. Pre season usually starts around July. Get down there and share some of your wisdom. If your legs run as quick as your mouth you could save some petrol and leave the car at home. Don't let the team down and pull a no show, that'd be very whimpy of you.

......I give the wisdom here for free , if I come down there I'll charge at the Popovic rate of pay.

I felt worse after the other two grannies as the officials cost us........Adelaide were just better on the day, we weren't that good. So more accepting of this loss.

Need to finish first really to win it..........8/11 winners finished first. Says it all

The team arrive back around 2:45 today so I am sure a welcome home at the airport will be appreciated..........COYW

Why is Redmayne always the scapegoat?

1st goal - poor marking(NOT HIS FAULT) that resulted in a tap in(no goalie can save a tap in from 6 yards)

2nd goal - get ****ed if you thing he is saving that free kick

3rd goal - 1 on 1 that he almost got to, but it was gone by then.

When will he ever get over the pre-conceived hate?

This people who sit near me at parra blame for everything

Goals scored from lack of marking

    Goals from needles free kicks

    The entire Middle East situation

    Sydney property prices

Bobbi from home and away getting killed

    The list goes on

Does anyone know what time the team fly in tomorrow??

    Qantas QF752

    Dep ADL 1220pm

    Arr SYD 245pm

I'm putting the pieces of the puzzle together & the indicated timings suggest the team is on this flight.

As the team walked around post-match to thank us, I could see Santa was hurting the most. His face told the complete story. This was confirmed by the pic on the RBB/WSW FB page, showing RBB members consoling him. He has scored some clutch goals this season. We may not have had the opportunity as fans for a family reunion here in ADL were it not for his prowess this season. Nothing but absolute respect.

I am also booked on this flight. Anybody else? Team are likely to be in the Qantas Club lounge waiting for their flight. If you're on the same flight, PM me. I am allowed 1 guest into the Qantas Club. More than happy to guest a forum regular, rather than waste a guest spot. I have no intention of hassling the team. They need their own time & space today.

You only have something to say when we get beat. Says pretty much everything about the type of fan you are. Travel about 30 minutes east, they'd love you. Go to Adelaide did you?

.....what's the use of commenting when we win it speaks for itself -what do you want me to say when we win - " hip hooray hip hooray" and wave some poms poms around . So you are a superior fan if you manage to get to that hole called Adelaide ?

Superior to the armchair know it all faceless critics who have never run a training session in their lives, surface whenever we lose with their 'insights' but presume that they have all the answers and should be running an elite professional football club? Yep, definitely.

Some random thoughts while I try to find the motivation to get up and drive home....

    - watching football at an afl stadium is ****.

    - feel really happy for Neville banging one in. Feel he has been excellent this season and has copped some unfair criticism. Good for him.

    - lol at people hanging the loss on redmayne. Maybe we need a hashtag #blameredmayne - lose a final?#blameredmayne. bad traffic on the m4? #blameredmayne. Unlimited can't find a girl? #blameredmayne

    - Adelaide fans are rubbish - two chants, club issued Chelsea style plastic flags and extended periods of silence but at least they stayed for their own presentation so better than roar fans.

    - Adelaide are an excellent side and fully deserved the title. Their persistent tactical fouling annoys the hell out of me but if the refs are going to allow it then what do you do?

    - extremely proud of our team and our support - continue to exceed expectations.

    - fantastic trip despite the result - love my wsf and WSW family.

I'm guessing you're already on you're way by now, but I'm sure there are plenty of people the same, myself included. What got me moving is the thought spending more time here will cost me more money. F*** that.

    Drive safe.

Back home from Adelaide. The Reds were just about flawless today, and they pointed out a few deficiencies:

[*]The biggest worry: we tend to disappear in the big games away from home. Roar, Victory, now Adelaide.

I Was discussing this my mates over drinks last night, when we get outplayed like we did yesterday, why doesn't popa have a plan B?

Why can't he tinker with his tactics to stop teams like adelaide dominating us?

Both the Semi and the GF showed we give away too many needless fouls that come back to hurt us. We were second best for most of that game and the best team on the day won. Congratulations to all our fans who gave everything they could. Wasting marquee money on Pio when it could have been spent on real quality in attack, particularly, hurt us over the season.

If we had opted for a Fornaroli (is there another at his price?) we could have won a Premier's Plate and hosted a GF - and the end result may have been different...

Still, the transition from last season's 2nd last to 2nd, and a positive change in style has been most welcome. We now have to do some wise shopping in the football supermarket in preparation for a taxing A-League + ACL campaign. No side has coped with both comfortably through their duration, yet!

Maybe we are expecting too much too soon. Adelaide has just completed year three of their Spanish experience. We had one year, and rebooted the squad in the process. But we need to do better next season.

For me, this game was always going to be an uphill battle from even before kick -off. Adelaide had all the momentum in terms of public support and sentimentality as well as playing form. It kind of reminded me of the 2014 NRL Grand final where Souths were the public and media favourite while, like us, the Bulldogs were the pantomime villain. Remember the bell ringing by Russell Crowe before the game to signal that it was their time!

And just to add, I have never been more sure of a goal about to be scored by any team  than when Adelaide were awarded the free kick which led to their 2nd goal. Again - momentum!

It's not so much his ability to save goals. More his organisational + communicating skills and ability to command his area and make his defenders confident that he is in control. You always saw that with Covic when he was our keeper. I guess he set the standard. These days we get nervous from any corners or free kicks close to goal.

'Hate' is a strong word to use though.

fair points both ways, so who would we take. Do we do a city and get a 30 year old ex epl/la liga player . It seems that Reddy isnt the answer either.

personally id stick with redmayne for one more season, but i dont get to have a say

I have never walked out after a game and said thank god for Redmayne..he really saved our asses tonight.

By the same yardstick, how many times did you walk out of a match and know that Covic was the difference..

Its ok to analyse goals and say that Redmayne isn't to blame, and maybe so with some of them, but how many saves did Covic make that he really wasn't entitled to. We are ACL Champions largely because of his clean sheet for 180 minutes fending off an absolute onslaught.

That is the difference, for me anyway. If it comes down to Redmayne being the difference, we will lose every time.

I was talking in terms of buildup and just general feeling that it was their year - even before kickoff. I get what you're saying re the actual game (even though you are a Roosters supporter  :cheeky:) but in both cases it turned out as it was scripted.

anyone want to explain to jamo that you are tought when you are 6 to be goal side?? after the season he has had that was absolutely shocking, i mean we know what we get with nts (normal game not much on the line the guy is better then ramos, big important games he turns to dust) but jamo??? i expected more from him.

i honestly believe what lost us the game(yes we didnt tunr up in the first half but we still had a chacne) is killing momentum in the second half we had so much going forward but then would stop adn play the ball back and kill all the moment, im a big beliver of possesion and playing back BUT you play the ball back if you have no option going forward. so many times i saw dimas, baccus & andreu have an attacking options, stop and play the ball back and give plenty of time for adelaide to track back and restructure...frustrating

Just saw this on Twitter, and thought it was interesting.

Popa's ability to motivate players for the big games.

That's now 3 GFs and a lot of derbies where our players don't turn up or the opposition really steps up

I don't think it's so much motivation, as more out tactics are predictable. I thought the Brisbane grand final was the only game where we played to a good game plan which they couldn't predict. Even the ACL final was mostly luck.

Popa needs to develop in the tactical side of the game. That comes through experience though.
