  • Berisha Blasts Brace

    mack

A brace from Besart Berisha either side of a goal from Archie Thompson saw Melbourne Victory run out comprehensive winners over a depleted Western Sydney Wanderers.

The third meeting between the clubs this season went the same way as the other two, despite an early promising start by the Wanderers, the Victory opened the scoring after breaking down the left flank in the 25th minute as Khalfallah found Berisha with a perfect cross that the Albanian striker couldn't miss with a point blank header.

The Wanderers had their best chance of the night shortly after the goal, with a game of pinball in the Victory penalty area that saw Nathan Coe make a double save, first from Nick Kalmar then Kerem Bulut.

By the time an hour rolled around the Red & Black petrol tank was gone, and Archie Thompson took full advantage, as Iacopo La Rocca charged out well into the Victory half, completely missing the ball and setting up Khalfallah to beat Topor-Stanley to the ball. He delivered a simple through ball and Thompson made no mistake to slot it past his ex-teammate Ante Covic.

Khalfallah had a hat-trick of assists with a lofted through ball that Berisha latched onto, Covic flying out of his penalty area but getting nowhere near stopping Berisha from tapping into an open net.

The Wanderers next match is against FC Seoul in the Asian Champions League on Wednesday the 18th of March in Korea.

I don't know how NTS, Kalmar and Tanaka all played again last night. I was surprised we only made 8 changes. But I guess with our evergrowing injury list, there isn't a massive pool of players to choose from.

Tbh, if we had the luxury that victory have to constantly play almost the same 11 players week in and week out, we would probably be looking the goods as well.

And people leaving before the final whistle...eugh

Tanaka is a machine...as ptwsw said he should get a nice long contract asap, but I'd have no confidence in this current ownership to get the job done

Thought the same thing, the others were looking a bit fatigued, would never have guessed Tanaka played only 48 hours earlier.

It sounds odd but my opinion of Berisha has somewhat lifted after his smartarse water bottle thing, much wittier than giving the finger or running to bitch to the ref.

Agree with this. Berisha is one of those players oppostion fans love to hate but would equally love to have him in your team. He never stopped chasing down the ball even at 3-0 up and putting pressure on the defence and yeah I thought it was smartarse but cool the way he handled the bottle. The shrug, the drink and then get on with in. No bitchin' to the ref... "Mr Ref, look what those nasty RBB threw at me".......

Also on Covic. Yeah he has been a bit shaky of late but remember he too has played virtually non-stop for two years now. Just 'cos he is a goalie and his job isn't as physical as the outfielders doesn't mean mentally he can't get tired and his intensity drops. I think his performance is symptomatic of the schedule just like everyone else.

Did anyone else notice the stare Bulut gave Finkler as they swapped sides before kick off? I caught it on the big screen. It was rad, fink shït himself.

Is it possible our rock solid Covic has just all of a sudden hit the wall as far as age goes?

I remember Melb V had a keeper a few years ago who used to be good but when the season started, he just looked so old and so past it.

Maybe Covic has finally hit that moment where its no longer capable to keep performing well? And the decline is quite rapid from that point. As a red n black legend, he should do whats best for the club and retire as a hero rather than giving us another year of really poor play.

Gotta say, despite the performance on the field, the RBB was totally on point last night. The dynamics in the volume, noticeably lifting for things like corners down the north end, was fantastic. For me, it was the best "team" performance from the active all season and you should all be proud of that effort.

This is in no way a criticism of the RBB at all.  The tribute to Nato was wonderful, and the overall performance of the RBB was absolutely rock solid,  That, on top of Weds night's superb effort, gets a big thumbs up from me.

But tonight was the first time ever, I felt , sadly, more like I was at a SFC than at a WSW game.  There was constant conversation from all around our Bay (48) and the rest of the Western stand,  that was audible above the RBB.  And I've never known so many people not to participate even in the clapping of certain chants and choruses.  The numbers participating in the Posnan seem to decline week by week.

On Weds night , the smallish crowd was lifted very early on by a WDWSF, even tho the numbers were lower than last night.

Last night - no first half WDWSF.  There wasn't one until the 53rd minute I believe.  Even then, quite a few around me didn't participate, which I think was a first.   But by that late stage in the game, the "horse had well and truly bolted", and the crowd was flat, flat, flat.

Absolutely.... WDWSF doesn't have the same electrifying intensity it had in S1 & S2....or at ACL games.... no doubt about that. And it's true that our collective spirit has definitely been dampened by this disappointing and frustrating season.  Being down a goal or two had led to a pessimism settling on us as well.

But just maybe, an early WDWSF is still worth having, as even semi begrudgingly, it still gets most of the stadium involved.

A genuine question, but no doubt some will think that I'm trolling - Why is it that everyone has to stay till the end? I'll stay if I'm there (I was caught at work, so didn't make the game), but I don't expect others to do the same, especially if it means missing an hourly train for a mere ten minutes of football when the team is down 3-0. That people continue to turn up should be enough to show that they support the team.

Also, it seems more than a little rude to verbally abuse people for leaving early when you have no idea as to their circumstances. Sure, some may be throwing in the towel, but others may simply have to leave given other priorities.

I get that people love the club, but, as I have said before, we all show our support in different ways, and it would be great if we could avoid abusing other fans as the ship continues to sink.

I got no problem with it as long as you do the same if we are winning 3 nil. But somehow I think 95% of those who left early would not have if this was the case  :xnod:

Agreed no fan should be abused though. Maybe just punched in the back of the head  :ninja:

Ante has been left alone a lot this season. Various defensive errors make him look bad. There was a similar anti Ante movement in S2, then came the ACL, and only a few months ago there were loud calls to include him in the squad for the Asia cup.

I am actually quite concerned about who is going take over should he retire. Although we haven't seen much of Bouzanis I have my doubts that he is the answer. Janjetovic would be the logical choice, but that is never going to happen.

Just to clarify, I'm not Anti Ante. I don't want to see him replaced but seeing his form at the moment is concerning. I agree that our awful defense has put a lot of pressure on him to save the day. Its a mighty tall order to save some of those situations. Having said that, he came out of his box twice last night and (to me) never looked like he was going to get the ball/stop the play. That's more worrying in my mind.

Ante has been a frickin hero, I hate to see him off his game.

I think the WDWSF is getting to the point where it is losing it's impact. Same as Poznan. Just restrict the Poznan to being done by the RBB. The rest of the stadium is half hearted about it anyway. With the WDWSF, just do it after a goal or something. Perhaps find something new to communicate to the sidelines with. But then when you are losing game after game, it can be hard to get motivated to do these things.

I think that have may have something to do with the performance of the team. I'm in Bay 48, and during the second half I didn't get out of my seat, i was very relaxed because we had no good chances on goal.

I've got to admit, that game did have a very different feel to it, in terms of atmosphere, especially from Bay 48.

I'll never leave a match early for this reason.

I know how much you guys love NRL anecdotes.

Parramatra were playing the Tigers at parra. Down 31-0 with about 13 mins left probably 1/3 of the stadium left, including a high amount of people around me. Parramattta then scores 5 converted tries in 13 minutes to make it 31-30 at FT.

The moral is dont leave because you don't know when a team will randomly decide to show heart and play hard,

It's normal human nature guys. The hardcore will always get into the Poznan and WDYSF, no problem. But for a lot of people it was just something different and they aren't as fussed anymore. The novelty, if you like, has worn off. Not everyone is as committed as the RBB and posters on this forum.

The fact that the team is pants at the moment doesn't help either. Win a few games, start playing the big playoff matches and knockout rounds again and I'm sure that waning enthusiasm will magically re-appear!

Yep... it did.  It was terrible.  Somehow "atmosphere" never really happened at all last night..For a Victory game, that was unusual.

Look.... it could be that everything is stale about this season.  And being ahead on Weds rather than a goal or three down last might makes the world of difference.

I'd hate to see WDWSF disappear...as the Posnan well could.

I guess my point is.... do the WDWSF  early in the game.... when there is still some optimism about the game, as a way of engaging the side stands.  It was too late in the 53rd minute to really lift the crowd ... and thereby the players.

FWIW  I thought the timing of EVERYTHING from the RBB was perfect on Weds night....absolutely perfect, as opposed to last night.

It was always going to be a difficult game, Melbourne Victory have a very good team and decent to top class players in every position.

The Wanderers were exhausted last night, mentally and physically., we all knew with the time table of games we had to endure it was going to be tough?

I actually thought the atmosphere was great last night, I've been in the active support once at the Sydney Derby last season and I still talk with a rasp in my voice because of the chanting/ singing involved.

So I've great admiration for what the BBB bring to the games week in week out.

This is our club, our team we're all in this together so we stay tight and endure the highs and lows....

We can't be wanting to wear a jersey with a star advertising we're Asian champions one minute and then wanting to bin our regular jersey the next....shoulder to shoulder.

Can't "restrict" the Poznan. If people want to do it they will; the rbb never asked anyone else to do it. I'm surprised it's still happening anyway.

Just want to clarify... I have to say that, while from my perspective the atmosphere was flat, I thought we saw some of the best team play I've seen all season....in patches.

I was proud of the players.  who clearly must be exhausted,  and I felt optimistic about the future,  despite the result.

Yep! And that's fine Imo. The sidelines are still more vocal than any equivalent sections round the country and will get involved when things are better or when it's close and we're pushing forward... we can't expect anything from them, the fact that they leave other crowds for dead is just a massive bonus.

Middle of the upper eastern stand, very high % did the Poznan & WDYSF but we did have a large run of people leave around the 80th minute. I think the RBB were waiting for a goal in the first half as the WDYSF for has been done regularly after a first half goal & usually when the stands are more active/loud.

People have young kids or they have other engagements to get to or an early start the next day, these situations are understandable but let's be honest, leaving 10 minutes early helps this situation how exactly? Especially when there are 11k people at 930 in the evening, it's not exactly going to make a big difference traffic wise or save significant periods of time. Surprisingly when we had the 7k mid week, we didn't have streams of people leaving but we did last night? It just doesn't add up.

The biggest issue I have with people walking out last night is that you are walking out on your team when they need you the most. The players are mentally & physically drained, they are exhausted & the struggle is real when you make 8 changes & you've got injuries to key players, it's like members don't understand the situation the players are in & think they are just robots. You didn't see anything of the like in S1 or S2, but all of a sudden we are losing, having a bad run & struggling, people now have excuses that they need to leave? Bullshit mate! I don't like this sudden change in attitude because results aren't going our way. To be honest we're now 3/4 through the season so it will be interesting to see attendances go when we have nothing to play for and we probably won't be playing our first XI either.

Wendy, we are all tired, and we are not even the ones who train, do the playing and travelling.

    • The team has now played 31 competitive matches (20 HAL, 8 HAL, 2 CWC, 1 FFA cup) and did collect massive amounts of frequent flyer miles.
    • It has played 10 games in the last 7 weeks, and the last 7 games in an incredible 20 days.

Popa said recently that, even when he played in the "gruelling" Championship in England, did he not have to cope with such a congested schedule. It is an understated way of saying that this season has been murder. And there is more to come.

    • We will play another 10 games in the next 6 weeks; then comes a ten day break before Guangzhou.
    • Between April 18th and April 25th the team will play three home games.

We will all be exhausted by the time the final whistle will have been blown on April 25th. I hope we'll still have the energy for WDWSF, and some. But: other clubs hope to win titles at the end of the season. We have won the biggest title of them all right at the beginning. We must never forget that.

I've sat in the western side of the stadium Wendy and to be honest it's a different atmosphere as you actually hear the away supporters as apposed to where I sit in the eastern stand, unless you're near the away fans the RBB deafens everything around where I sit....you're love for this game is becoming a tad worrying Wendy...I can see you getting a few coaching badges in the next few years, move over Ian Crook we've a actually teacher onboard.

     You're funny Jaggy!!

I know what you mean about East and West.

Season 1 we started in the West.   Serial pests in Bay 48 caused us to want to clear out to the other side.... which I do prefer.  The only problem in the East is the Sun.

And yes,  you're more likely to hear opposition support in the West...if there is any.

We're close to the RBB... so it usually drowns out everything else.   :)   :)

Season 2 membership... where do we end up? Bay 48, two rows down from serial pests.

Yes... I heard nothing at all from Victory supporters other than pre game and maybe once more after a goal.
