  • Berisha Blasts Brace

    mack

A brace from Besart Berisha either side of a goal from Archie Thompson saw Melbourne Victory run out comprehensive winners over a depleted Western Sydney Wanderers.

The third meeting between the clubs this season went the same way as the other two, despite an early promising start by the Wanderers, the Victory opened the scoring after breaking down the left flank in the 25th minute as Khalfallah found Berisha with a perfect cross that the Albanian striker couldn't miss with a point blank header.

The Wanderers had their best chance of the night shortly after the goal, with a game of pinball in the Victory penalty area that saw Nathan Coe make a double save, first from Nick Kalmar then Kerem Bulut.

By the time an hour rolled around the Red & Black petrol tank was gone, and Archie Thompson took full advantage, as Iacopo La Rocca charged out well into the Victory half, completely missing the ball and setting up Khalfallah to beat Topor-Stanley to the ball. He delivered a simple through ball and Thompson made no mistake to slot it past his ex-teammate Ante Covic.

Khalfallah had a hat-trick of assists with a lofted through ball that Berisha latched onto, Covic flying out of his penalty area but getting nowhere near stopping Berisha from tapping into an open net.

The Wanderers next match is against FC Seoul in the Asian Champions League on Wednesday the 18th of March in Korea.

    Promising early signs.

That Archie goal sealed the deal, we pushed men forward on route to goal, turn over possession and within 6 or so seconds they score.

They are a very solid outfit Melbourne.

This is why not playing the A team is hurting the club, you can't send a bunch of kids out against Victory.

What we should have done is sent them out against City and then run over the top of Victory tonight, which we could have.

What's better a loss to City and a win against Victory or how it stands right now ?

The A team was being held back for next Wednesday's game in Korea.

We need to shoot more, especially Sotirio and Castelen. The ball usually gets stripped as soon as we walk in.. so why not shoot F ARKEN!?

It's been the story of the season with our forwards always trying to go as close to the goal before they shoot and once the ball gets taken away, they're stuck, and the mids and our backs are scrambling to protect the opposition counter.

3 of our goals conceded today and a MAJORITY of the conceded goals this season was due to our opposition counter. Our wing backs such as Golec and Gallaway are too slow to get back. We didn't seem to have too much of a problem in our first 2 seasons with Polenz and Da Puzzo. We, however, did replace Polenz with Tanaka, they both have speed... but certainly, we need a faster wing backs.

As we are at the bottom of the table from the majority of the A-League season, the boys are trying so hard and using all their energy to get the goal. And again, compared to season 1 and 2, we used to score majority of our goals off other teams mistakes. We are no longer doing that, we are the team always pushing to attack first.

When our attack gets stopped by the opposition, our defenders are left to dry on the counter. And then we concede.

Lastly, our last 2 goals we conceded in the end were obviously due to fatigue.

I believe if we were to get audited by the AFC/FIFA and they find out we've played 2 competitive matches in just under 48 hours, it would certainly be frowned upon.

    FFA FAIL STRIKES ONCE AGAIN!

I'm still proud at the boys, very unlucky not to score 2 or 3 goals in the first half. Goalkeepers seem to be at their best when we play them,

While I mostly agree, I don't think Covic launching himself into no man's land was fatigue. That was a brain fade of the highest order, and mistakes like that are becoming more common. Makes me wonder if Bouzanis is really piling on the pressure at training, because Covic is off the boil right now, and it doesn't look like his head is in the right space. Edited by smp

I wasn't expecting us to win this game with all the injuries and youngsters / new players in the team, but I was hoping to see at least one goal from the boys.

We looked OK for an hour without being clinical in the final third, then as a result of too many balls given away, we got fatigued and the difference in class really shone through and MV ran away with it easily in the end.

Full credit to the RBB again, showing great support to the team. Also liked the tifo and the streamers!

Good luck to the boys mid-week in Seoul - COYW!!!

We've seen quite a few times this season of Covic giving those type of goals, but from tonight, he does not seem to have belief/trust in his defenders and so he took it upon himself.

Covic is definitely not in the right frame of mind at the moment and his confidence has been hit hard.

With what Covic has accomplished for us, I still think he deserves 1 more year with us next season as a starter. And if we can't get his rhythm back, we still have Bouzanis be the started.

I agree with DinoP on this one. There were some really good signs - at least we started to try to turn and play up through midfield rather than pass sideways or backwards repeatedly.

Castelen showed his best form to date and he was always dangerous, Trifiro was industrious and competent in midfield, though Bulut spent the whole evening waiting for a killer ball that never came.

I was heartened by the style of play, but the 0-3 scoreline was a tribute to MV's clinical finishing, more than a reflection of the difference between the sides.

The intensity and concentration so evident in Covic's game over the previous two seasons has weakened in his past few appearances, so it will not be a surprise if Bouzanis appears more regularly.

A tale of two cities and a tale of two keepers. FFA schedule haz zero consideration for the RBB and the double shifts we have to put in with our CPC bench looking slim. Let's also hope Mack's next headline doesn't include the word Seouless.

Positives - Sotirio, Perkatis and Triffiro.  And I never thought I'd say that in the same sentence.  Season is over in the A-League.  We need to give these boys more time because they're finally showing us what the boss has been seeing behind closed doors.

If Castelen can get enough gas to go 90 he's going to be the best thing we've had.

Fatigue was always going to be a problem for us, we simply couldn't afford to go into halftime behind ... and we did.

Castelen was excellent. The same can't be said about the back four (though I do like Yusuke).

11K was a massively disappointing crowd, especially for such high profile opposition. We can expect more of the same in coming weeks.

The ground is starting to take on an early season one feel in terms of atmosphere. Fewer numbers, but a lot of passion. I want the bigger crowds to return (which will no doubt happen with success), but I am finding this enjoyable in its own way.

Gotta say, despite the performance on the field, the RBB was totally on point last night. The dynamics in the volume, noticeably lifting for things like corners down the north end, was fantastic. For me, it was the best "team" performance from the active all season and you should all be proud of that effort.

Perkatis and Sotorio should be starting every a-league game left this year. We need games in them, consistently, to see what they can do. Getting a run here and there does nothing

We should have had some goals.

Some of the decision making when we get up there.... mother ****er.

Before I forget did I actually see berisha drink from a bottle someone chucked? What a smartarse

Yeh, he did it twice, first time after one was tossed from the East stand and again after the goal, one came from the RBB. I was hoping the 2nd was "spiked"... :-)

we need to dump of FFA. On what planet did it make sense to have 2 aleague games in 3 days FFS. Morons, just morons.

Popa was right last night when he said the FFA didn't believe we'd win the ACL

    • We started well, competitive but ran out of gas for sure.

Victory are the best team in the HAL. They have real quality. Their French giant at the back is a top defender and now he is back from injury they are my favourites for the title.

We huffed and puffed but second half didn't really create anything.

2 games in 2 days is massively unfair and with half a first choice team out there a result for us would have been an upset.

We won't finish bottom of the ladder.

Berisha handled the bottle throwing well I thought. Didn't rush to the ref but opened the bottle and took a swig!

    We have some promising youngsters.

Castelan providing he stays injury free will be even better next year with a full prep.

Bandwagoners already seem to be exiting stage right.

As others have said I thought we looked pretty decent from say the 15-20 min mark till the 2nd goal. If one of the mad scramble shots in the 1st half had gone in it would have benefited us immensely, but it didn't. Was very happy with Yianni's stint and Romeo was causing probs. The obvious lack of familiarity in combos between players was a problem particularly in going forward, and Kerem was too much in goal poaching mode to benefit from our scrappy play.

The season is definitely gone and fatigue is screwing us. Has to be said the pitch at Wanderland is starting to look pretty ugly, which means our limited ability to use a ground passing game is even more dodgy. I was very pleased to see K-Man Kuzmanovski get a cameo at the end, and as others have said hope to see more of the likes of Perkatis, Alessi, Fofanah and Sotirio between now and season's end.

Oh, and the the dickhead in Bay 65 Row P who was worried about how the Bulldogs were going in the league, and those with no kids who left early, don't bother coming back. Win or fooking lose, and you stay till the final whistle.

It was a tough game ... but last time I looked we are the Champions of Asia and have another massive ACL game next week.

I watched Topor closely and thought he was injured.  But maybe nothing left and resting for Wednesday.  It is both a physical and mental game and when you lose the mental side ... doesn't matter about the physical.  And this is where we need to trust popa.  Key players have a lot on their minds ... Tomi and Spira looking for bigger things ... the B teamers wanting to get more game time ... and the kids just wanting to play on the big stage.

    Two questions:

We have several key players injured ... which one are we missing the most?

If popa did leave who did I see last night as his replacement?

    Link to comment

I went to this game filled with hope, however mindful of reality.

We have players that struggle to play at this intensity for 90 mins..this is directly proportional to playing 7 games in 20 days, or what ever that equation is.

Bulut seemed distracted, hogged the ball a bit..very average game

Romeo Castelen just is not a 90 min player..runs out of gas fast..

    Sotirio was good I thought.

we had some great moments, and I think that once we get this year over with, deal with fatigue and injuries, strengthen our side in off season, get one or two key positions sorted, we will have a strong young side for next year...Teams like Victory must be pushing the envelope with the cap etc?

Loved the tribute for Nato, flags etc..was very moving, well done

RBB : Please sit in your allocated seat, mind the flags, and please think of the children with your chants etc..

I don't know how NTS, Kalmar and Tanaka all played again last night. I was surprised we only made 8 changes. But I guess with our evergrowing injury list, there isn't a massive pool of players to choose from.

Tbh, if we had the luxury that victory have to constantly play almost the same 11 players week in and week out, we would probably be looking the goods as well.

And people leaving before the final whistle...eugh

    Link to comment

Disappointing, but pleased with Perkatis and Sotorio , we need to blood and give game time to our young guns for next season. Tanaka again a standout, needs to be locked up with a nice contract.

Kerem was immense, ran all night especially one run very late in the game when he was dispossessed in their box and he tracked back to our back third. Service to him was crap, no quality ball to work with but with Takahagi playing deeper role now I think we will see Kerem at his best, loved his effort, I hope we sign him long term and build around him. In my opinion he epitomizes all that is WSW.

People leaving early gets to me big time, if we can't support our boys now at their lowest point, when can we show them what WSW and their efforts mean to us? Bandwagoners or fair weather support shits me, I've waited a long time for WSW and to love a team no matter, lose, draw or win is what I'm about but to see all the shite leaving early upsets me.

just watching the replay on tv now...

can't comment on the game because to disturbed that Brenton Speed called me a gentleman after i was spotted by the camera in the crowd giving it to a victory player for trying to take a free kick 10m further up the field.
