  • Borrello Gives Wanderers A Dozen Defeats

    mack

A giveaway gift from Antony Golec gave Brandon Borello an opening he took to score the only goal of a mostly dour 90 minutes of football in Brisbane.

A complete lack of service for the strikers, coupled with an inability to retain the ball in midfield coupled with another calamitous defensive effort that better resembled an Under 10's game to hand the Roar a match that was otherwise petering out to a tame 0-0 draw.

Neither side could claim any real bragging rights over their performance in the match, but it is the Roar who took the three points as a result of Brandon Borello's 53rd minute goal. Ex-Wanderers Jerome Polenz took advantage of sloppy work by Golec, who was attempting to play out from the back, as he swooped on a weak pass to winger Jaushua Sotirio. His simple lay-off gave Borello a corridor into the penalty area, and he obliged, with Nikolai Topor-Stanley overrunning the ball perhaps as a result of a slight touch from Golec. However the chance came about, Borello took one touch to set up a strike on his left followed by calmly sidefooting it past Dean Bouzanis.

The Wanderers could barely string two passes together, their attack limited to aimless long balls down the park that more often than not resulted in Kerem Bulut being monstered off the ball by the Roar defence. Tomi Juric came on in the second half and it took until the 92nd minute for the Wanderers to truly threaten a goal, as Juric latched onto some clownshoes attempted defending from a Bouzanis long punt to get on goal, smashing his effort onto the crossbar.

The Wanderers next loss match is against Melbourne City at Parramatta Stadium on Wednesday the 11th of March.

I got slammed by some a month ago when I said nothing would change unless the coach changed.

I've seen nothing that suggests Popavic has changed much ( aside from playing Yojiro deeper), he isn't trying anything new and the performances are still poor.

We've a better squad than the performances suggest.

The buck stops with the Manager.

I disagree I dont think buck stops with manager the players are underperforming and dont deserve to be in playing in the squad but no one is pressuring them for position.

Do we even have a midfield ? because I didn't see then track back and defend all that much lol. Absolutely no urgency from most of our players today and again lazy passing.

we simply dont have a functioning midfield we cant put consecutive passers together.

So when the opportunity arises to bring fresh blood into the squad through injury replacement, maybe put some pressure on incumbents.....Popa signs Nick Ward

    It shows....they've given up.

What annoys me is that if that is the case then let some of the youths play. At least we.get something out of these games. The ground was bad and the conditions awful so why not rest players like Spiral who looked disinterested and out of sorts

A coach cannot rest the first choice Australian centreback for an 18 year old he would be a laughing stock
I think we are past being the laughing stock. If you watched the game, Spira had an awful game and if he is selected for the socceroos then we are going to miss him for a couple of weeks anyway.

Thought NTS was worse and as you say spira will miss a few games so why drop him for this game? We don't have many options at centerback anyway , allessi or larocca ?

Yeah uhh... I'm usually content with something post-match but here, I got very little.

    Dour.

    Very dour.

And it shits me to no end that we played amazingly against ESFC and Guangzhou, and then we dish that crap up. Also the fact that we have one of the best squads in the league - players like Covic, Spiranovic, Tanaka, Takahagi, Castelen, Juric and Rukavytsya who all should be amazing - and we still lose.

We played so amazing in the previous two games we lost both and conceded 10 goals!!

Some of the lack of ball rentenion from la rocca, poljak, bridge and castelen was just absolutely woeful

It reminds me when I use to run around in my career high division 4 with a bunch of other never hasbeens

Even players like spira and Takahagi were **** totally lost today at times

***** just focus on Seoul! We win away we are in great spot go advance in Our group.

We need a minimum of 4 points against Seoul, lets face it we wont beat Guangzhou away and we need to finish Kashima at home

so lets just use the youth players, give them a chance....

Dont know about everybody else but this season bas been soul destroying or character building depending on how you view it lol.

I just go to or watch every game now not expecting too much that way I dont get so frustrated/upset with the results. Reckon The busy schedule coming up in the a league and ACL will be a roller coaster. But win or lose wouldnt miss one moment.

Whatever level our opponent is we seem to lift/drop off to one goal less than that level. If we'd played today (or against the Mariners/Jets) at the level we played against ESFC or Guangzhou we would have won all of those games. On the other hand if we played ESFC or Guangzhou at the level we played today or against City we would have copped a cricket score.

The wheels are wobbling now.  be interesting to see the crowd on Weds night, what with another game 2 days later. Am hoping we still get 10k but it may fall down to around the 8K mark.  I think this is our core number.

a game which summed up our season.

there is too much space between the defence and attack.

we are stretched and as a result the midfielders are getting destroyed.

look at brisbanes' goal, the ball was won by polenz inside our half and it put them on the attack immediately.

our fullbacks are playing too far back, and when they do win the ball, the transition takes too long.

the players simply look too scared to commit into attacking positions and as a result we have no creativity.

even if we had batistuta up front in his prime we still would lose as there is no supply to the striker.

go back to season 1: press high, long ball, and quick transition.

Your post is great. A good summation of what is happening. But can someone please go and tell Popa that, because as far as I am aware he is the only person who can really do anything about it. I am pretty sure the players are just playing to instructions.

    Wheels wobbling???

The wheels fell off weeks ago...lol... I will be there and that is all that matters to me. I love this club.  :grouphug:

Totally insipid/disjointed performance verging on the dysfunctional. We look so lost it's depressing.  La Rocca's worst game ever.... ironic given he dominated/was man of the match there in the grand final. Did Popa deny him a move in January? Looked like his heart wasn't in it... a bit like Mooy at the tail end of last season. Golec looks as nimble as the Titanic negotiating an iceberg. Even Castelen looked like he'd been smoking something before the game. But singling players out is not what it's about. We're just not playing as a cohesive, purposeful unit. Hard to fathom what is going on but one thing is for sure.... it is it isn't working

Lots of people liked this whole post.

To me... this is the guts of the problem.  The players have no confidence and look scared.

Admittedly at home in the last couple of games , they rose above this and found some fight.

    Today.... they didn't.   :(

Post match Popa has admitted the team is physically ruined. Just really tired!

Showed! We are in serious strife with the amount of games coming up.

It's more mental exhaustion/bewilderment. They wouldn't feel physically tired if they were winning games... even some games. They and Popa don't know what's happening to them and why. It's very draining for all concerned... including us!

The problem with the list is that there's no central midfielders

It's a bit like a chess match where the other guy sees you next move before even you do. Other teams read us like a book.

I was at the game tonight we sung our arses of. I had my two young boys with me, it shits me when not one of the players could be bothered to come over at the end . Its not just the players that are pissed of with losing it takes a fair amount of effort following this team away the least they could do is come over and sign a shirt etc, for kids that's what it's all about.

That's a shame.... but probably just shows how utterly demoralised and horrible they felt.

Watching on the tele, lots of us  appreciated your efforts!!!     :clapping:  :clapping:

Mate, poor. Write to the club. For me, that's an easy one to iron out!

is it the players that's the problem, or is that popa isn't trying anything new? like someone said above, teams are reading us like a book.
