  • Borrello Gives Wanderers A Dozen Defeats

    mack

A giveaway gift from Antony Golec gave Brandon Borello an opening he took to score the only goal of a mostly dour 90 minutes of football in Brisbane.

A complete lack of service for the strikers, coupled with an inability to retain the ball in midfield coupled with another calamitous defensive effort that better resembled an Under 10's game to hand the Roar a match that was otherwise petering out to a tame 0-0 draw.

Neither side could claim any real bragging rights over their performance in the match, but it is the Roar who took the three points as a result of Brandon Borello's 53rd minute goal. Ex-Wanderers Jerome Polenz took advantage of sloppy work by Golec, who was attempting to play out from the back, as he swooped on a weak pass to winger Jaushua Sotirio. His simple lay-off gave Borello a corridor into the penalty area, and he obliged, with Nikolai Topor-Stanley overrunning the ball perhaps as a result of a slight touch from Golec. However the chance came about, Borello took one touch to set up a strike on his left followed by calmly sidefooting it past Dean Bouzanis.

The Wanderers could barely string two passes together, their attack limited to aimless long balls down the park that more often than not resulted in Kerem Bulut being monstered off the ball by the Roar defence. Tomi Juric came on in the second half and it took until the 92nd minute for the Wanderers to truly threaten a goal, as Juric latched onto some clownshoes attempted defending from a Bouzanis long punt to get on goal, smashing his effort onto the crossbar.

The Wanderers next loss match is against Melbourne City at Parramatta Stadium on Wednesday the 11th of March.

is it the players that's the problem, or is that Popa isn't trying anything new? like someone said above, teams are reading us like a book.

Reading us like a book...the book isn't even open... there is no hunger, no challenges for the ball, passing is atrocious, not really much to read into...

The travelling support was amazing - loved seeing the Poznan, and seeing you guys doing A Call to Arms, and I think 'We Unite as One'

Shame our on-field representatives couldn't match the travelling support's excellence

Too much blaming players and coach. why not blame the tactics.

Bringing the ball to the middle where there are no midfield kinda lost the plot.

Popa is responsible for the tactics that's why he's getting the blame. Who do you blame instead?

I'd be playing the strongest possible team on Wednesday and let the youth have a run on Friday to give senior players time to prepare for next week's ACL game. I know it's Victory and it's live on Free to Air TV but the FFA cant expect us to give everything twice in 3 days amongst a hectic schedule.

Time to introduce more of the kids in to the team, they should be hungry to prove themselves but they need some experience around them.  I would feel sorry for any kid thrown in to this team at the moment though as some players look like they don't give a ****. The best time to blood young kids is a bit at a time in to a settled side, not one that could easily just hang a kid out to dry.

Trying to think what else to say / type about today's game, written a few things.... then deleted them. What more it there to say than we were poor in every department, can't add to that.

Hopefully they were too embarrassed, but either way it's crap.

After the game, the players walked over to the RBB corner and clapped. They didn't sign any merch of fans.

Personally what to do I have asked myself this question and the answer is pops is smart in some ways there is no long term contracts I would be doing a Perth glory and thieving everyone's best players mainly from the a league cause our climate alone is shocking to play football at best seriously no reason why ferria went to ccm he should be red and black same with jeronimo nueman these are quality players that are missing and a league proven

The wheels are wobbling now. be interesting to see the crowd on Weds night, what with another game 2 days later. Am hoping we still get 10k but it may fall down to around the 8K mark. I think this is our core number.

It will be very core only, especially being a week night, with another gane two days later, our position in the league and the fact that today's performance was so inept. It all points to our lowest crowd since Brisbane Season one.

Thread needs more #PopaOut...after all, if the Sepp Herbergers & Jose Murinho's on Twitter can start pushing it why not add their insight here.

Up until Saudi Arabia our defence was our strength. Not any longer.

Up until Slade, Cheng, Duncan and Lederer our players, culture, coach, belief, passion, hunger were our strengths.

    Rapidly disappearing under their stewardship...

Season 1 in Season 3, thought we could win 4 games in S1 but in reality I think we will have only 1 win this season after the way we played today.

Disappointed, disheartened, lacking belief in the squad, I coach a u9's and I can tell you my little lot can string more passes together and show a lot more go than some of the "stars" today.

This season just shows how spoilt we were in the first 2 seasons, too much success too soon and our expectations have been totally inflated.

ACL is the go now but I want an A League grand final win more than ever.

They say you have to experience the lows to appreciate the highs but how much lower can we go?

By my rough count we've played approx 70 games since the commencement of the 13/14 AL season, with at least another 12 to play before our lads will get a much needed rest.

If you add in all the travel & the shorter break our players received between seasons compared to other AL clubs, its no wonder that injuries & fatigue are becoming a factor, particularly when we are trailing late in games.

If we remember back to seasons 1 & 2, we were often the stronger team physically in the last 15 minutes of matches.

The ACL & CWC have certainly taken their toll on our squad in the last 12 months.

The players looked drained and frustrated because of it. Bulut and Sotirio were promising at times, but there was no service to them. All in all it was a very frustrating match. I don't think either team deserved the win.

I took a picture of the team walking over us in the end, I noticed Bozanis and Juric did not come over.

in Jurics defense he is a lazy princess and walking all the way over to the RBB would be much more than he did for the entire season so it would have been a massive effort for him

We are dying physically because we are not able to retain posession for long periods. We turn the ball over at will with ridiculous long balls because we have no midfielders who can create and retain posession. We bypass the midfield on too many occassions and try and pass long balls to an isolated Bulut or Juric.

Just one game I would love to see either one holding midfielder or no holding midfielders at all. This idea of playing two holding midfielders is doing my head in and probably does more harm than good anyway. The question is Popa has been persisting with 4:2:3:1, how much longer will it continue?

What good are tactics if you don't have players capable of implementing them.

Now that's harsh, the players can play better whatever the tactics might be. That's the problem we are having. We are butchering the basics and our decision making is atrocious.

I'm at a loss to be honest. My gut tells me there must be something going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. There has to be.

I don't think expecting better than 1 win in 18 is having "inflated expectations" Sure some may have been unrealistically expecting a title this season, but this reallyhas just been pathetic from round one onwards. There will be under 10 thousand on Wednesday (I will drag myself the two hours in on a worknight, whoch is what the players deserve based on yesterday's 'effort'.
