  • Borrello Gives Wanderers A Dozen Defeats

    mack

A giveaway gift from Antony Golec gave Brandon Borello an opening he took to score the only goal of a mostly dour 90 minutes of football in Brisbane.

A complete lack of service for the strikers, coupled with an inability to retain the ball in midfield coupled with another calamitous defensive effort that better resembled an Under 10's game to hand the Roar a match that was otherwise petering out to a tame 0-0 draw.

Neither side could claim any real bragging rights over their performance in the match, but it is the Roar who took the three points as a result of Brandon Borello's 53rd minute goal. Ex-Wanderers Jerome Polenz took advantage of sloppy work by Golec, who was attempting to play out from the back, as he swooped on a weak pass to winger Jaushua Sotirio. His simple lay-off gave Borello a corridor into the penalty area, and he obliged, with Nikolai Topor-Stanley overrunning the ball perhaps as a result of a slight touch from Golec. However the chance came about, Borello took one touch to set up a strike on his left followed by calmly sidefooting it past Dean Bouzanis.

The Wanderers could barely string two passes together, their attack limited to aimless long balls down the park that more often than not resulted in Kerem Bulut being monstered off the ball by the Roar defence. Tomi Juric came on in the second half and it took until the 92nd minute for the Wanderers to truly threaten a goal, as Juric latched onto some clownshoes attempted defending from a Bouzanis long punt to get on goal, smashing his effort onto the crossbar.

The Wanderers next loss match is against Melbourne City at Parramatta Stadium on Wednesday the 11th of March.

Defending is pretty simple: delay, deny, deflect and defend

    Wax on, wax off!

If you can defend a wrench, you can defend a lead.

If there is grass on the outfield, shoot *****.

I don't buy the whole "things are happening behind the scenes" stuff. If anything is happening behind the scenes it is because we are losing and most players and coaches don't like to be at the bottom of the table having won only one game in 15. If we were winning there wouldn't be any talk of this whatsoever.

People should remember that the new owners were there when we won the ACL title. I didn't hear anything back then. Of course not, because we were winning. The question is if there is something happening behind the scenes, how much is it to do with the new owners? How much day to day contact the do the owners have with the actual players. I would say not much at all, if any. So if there is very little contact how are the players getting affected? Do you think the owners are there at training screaming on the players threatening to cut their pay? They are still getting paid their wages. There is no sign that their contracts are in danger. The bonus pay dispute happened a while back and got resolved. If the players are still thinking about that, then they should be questioned about their mental strength.

I do think that the "we are playing a lot of games" excuse is actually a legitimate one. It is probably right now a huge factor in our performances, especially considering the lack of depth we have. But for me this pattern of bad performances started a long time ago. It was happening in the ACL and even towards the end of last season where we were so fully focused on just defending leads (probably affected us in the grand final too). Our first season we played a no frills counter attacking style which was effective. As time went on we thought we could change our style, but this is what has caused us problems. We now try to build up from the back and we can't do it, so we get pinned/pressed and have no solutions. So we either lose the ball in our own half or lob it back to the opposition. Add the fatigue issue and the fact that our players technically don't seem to be up to the standard of other teams. Then there is the issue of Popa's recruiting (Saba, Sydney FC rejects, Golec, Nick Ward etc) and his insistence on playing the same style and system (4231), and you can see why we are just so rubbish. How we won the ACL is truly a miracle, but I'll take it.

Now the owners might play a small part in this current slump (everyone has to take a portion of the blame), but in my opinion there are much bigger problems than the owners. I actually think the owners are being quite genrous to Popa to get things right. Our problem isn't so much that we are coming last, but the way we are playing. I find it very hard to watch. Most people will only take so much as we don't even look like winning a game at all this season. Will it take a couple of 8k crowds in a row before management pulls their finger out and realises things need a shake up?

Of course it is legitimate, and I don't think anyone here would disagree. The recruitment policy since last off season has been confusing and has failed to get a balanced side. I look at the out goings and the in comings since June last year and you do wonder! The loss of Ono and the incoming and subsequent failure of Saba was a disaster, we didn't replace experience and that has killed us. We let Beauchamp go but never really developed another big stable central defensive pairing. NTS has looked badly exposed all season long. The creativity we had in the midfield in the first two seasons has gone and not been replaced. Romeo looks the business I will give you that, we need  game time from him. Ruka doesn't look settled and Juric's mind looks like it has already departed wanderland.

It's incredible the demands that people will place on athletes these days. Meanwhile the people posting are probably grotesquely overweight, eating a bag of corn chips and sucking down their third litre of mountain dew. Three intense 90 minute sessions of exercise, coupled with training sessions and tactic preparation: Over seven days? 99% of these people wouldn't make it.

Popovic has said in a number of press conferences that he is dealing with a limited squad capacity and an unfamiliar playing rotation which is spawning intense mental fatigue. He's written off the club world cup saga, Vitor Saba being a knob as well as the new owners obvious spanner in the works. But these should be added in there somewhere.

Even if you don't take his word as gospel given the demands we are placing on these players, is he really so far off the mark?

Honestly thats was the worst performance ive seen so far , gutless and heartless , how much longer are people gonna keep smiling an keep saying "ohh dont worry , maybe next week" we played s..hit , so eat s..hit , is the feeling im getting from the players atm

Thats exactly the way some players are. golec has been woeful ,easy turn overs, getting beaten by his man all the time and he got off yesterday and said he played well and it was bad luck.thats taking the fans for fools.

Golec has been appallingly poor all year. The way he turns over possession - regularly - in our defensive third, and usually when there's nothing but daylight between him and our goal, shows that he lacks any sense of appropriate urgency, or that he thinks he's a far better ball-player than he will ever be. Being a goalkeeper behind him must be a nightmare.

The players weren't sitting by the pool everyday sinking piss while they were in Coffs Harbour... They were training as usual, if not more intensely, just in a different location and they played as many trial matches as they would've A-League matches in that period. The only 'break' during the Asian Cup was a break from A-League games, every club and its players who weren't participating were carrying out business as usual and training hard. Surely people aren't stupid enough to think that during that time the club just went on a big holiday?

Nice try, Hughsey. We know Popa's rotation policy recruited new owners so that greedy Club World Cup ex-Smurf soft tissue injury.

The performance first game back after the break would suggest they were in fact, on the piss at Coffs harbour

I've asked both MajorMelons and Dalison for their thoughts and both have shied away. Their opinions are short and lack any evidence.

I'm not saying the two of them don't have anything good to say either.

But at the moment they just continue to s-hit post without giving us any insight as how they came to their position on things.

Seriously Dalison and Melons: F-ucking Elaborate. I'm not beyond hearing you out, I just have gained very little from you in our discussions.

See post #116 in this thread where I wrote why I don't think that fatigue is a satisfactory explanation for our poor performances.

    Ok, I'll state the obvious.

I don't believe in the excuse at the moment we've had too many games, too heavy a schedule.

We had January to regroup and recharge for a fresh finals assault. We had almost a month between competitive games.

And what happened? We were terrible against Melbourne City. two weeks later, against Newcastle, which was our third game in three weeks, we were even worse.

So yes, I believe that heavy workload is a crutch people are leaning on and the issues run deeper.

How did I come to that position? We've won one ******* game, that's how!

A belated shout out to the arseholes who arrived LITERALLY THIRTY MINUTES into the match, and tried to tell me I was "in their seat".

Was I going to move for them?

    You really want to know..?

Some folks wont like the answers.

Put it this way, its a combination of what we know (things we see), and what we read and hear..people saying look, I didnt sign up to be a part of that garbage (certain behavior) and its become about that..Also the schedule has impacted, plus the poor performances of the club etc...No Wanderdogs etc.

This is from a large network of people I know, not associate with or socialise I might ad, except we know we each are Wanderers fans.

Sorry to report that back, didnt want to..not popular etc

Don't think what you are reporting should be considered negative or unacceptable. You always learn more from things that aren't going right than things that do.

And must say the lack of Wanderdogs this season has been one of the scummiest lowlights of a shitterer season...
