  • Bridge Blows Jets Away As Western Sydney Wander Into 2nd

    blameturner

A stunning solo goal from Mark Bridge was the eventual match winner for Western Sydney, as Youssouf Hersi also put himself on the scoresheet just before half-time. Ruben Zadkovich scored a late consolation goal but the three points went the Wanderers way.

The Wanderers came into the regional round with the chance to take outright second spot on the table, and took their chance with both hands going five games unbeaten - the first side in the A-League this season to do so.

The Wanderers, in a match which they were not at their best, managed to take their chances, giving them a narrow 2-1 win over the Newcastle Jets.

Western Sydney opened the match strongly, creating numerous chances which were squandered. Youssouf Hersi had the best chance early on, with his shot going straight to Mark Birighitti, who was a strong figure in the Newcastle goal.

Aaron Mooy and Mateo Poljak both went close from long range, however still the sides remained locked at 0-0.

Newcastle dominated large patches of possession and looked to challenge the Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic, who was largely aided by his strong defensive line, which was still missing Captain Michael Beauchamp. Vice-Captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley however took the role to his own, and made a number of key blocks and interceptions.

Just seconds before half-time, Youssouf Hersi broke the dead-lock, with his deflected shot flying over the stationary defenders, who could do nothing but watch. Hersi and Ono peeled away to celebrate with the vibrant RBB, as Campbelltown Stadium erupted.

Newcastle came out of the half-time break with a larger sense of urgency, pressing higher and taking the game to the Wanderers defence. The Jets however failed to make possession turn into goals, with no real chances occurring for either side till the final third of the match.

With Hersi and Ono both replaced, the Wanderers have the Polenz to thank, with an excellent ball to Mark Bridge, who out muscled Josh Mitchell to power the ball in the back of Birighitti's net, from a tight angle.

Ruben Zadkovich scored a rocket from outside the area in stoppage time, however it wasn't enough for the Jets to takeoff and launch a comeback.

Goalkeeper Ante Covic received a yellow card in the dying moments of the match for delaying the restart of play, after copping abuse from both Emile Heskey and Ryan Griffiths, the latter lucky not to receive a straight red for striking Covic in the heated exchange. Popovic said it was important his team continued their good form at the business end of the season. The Wanderers trail leaders Central Coast by four points.

The Wanderers next match is against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park, Melbourne, on Saturday the 9th of February at 7:45pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

Great night and ROFL at the fence collapsing after the first goal

also those uniform heroes standing there....

Uniform heroes? I get the police hate as it is warranted, but these guys were doing their jobs for the most part.

Public Safety definitely trumps the immature attitude to authority...

did any one else get stopped by security at the entrance and get told to produce id? me and my mate got stopped all we had was our flags but then they took our id and recorded it,  didn't want to cause a fuss or drama knowing we done no harm so gave it to them and then they let us continue inside. Campbelltown was a bit worried with the amount of noise hence the amount of security at the pub and cops around and the dogs who were sniffing at my legs and trying to eat my sausage onion roll.

My fiancé got stopped at the gates because of the flag. The flag that is official merchandise and bought at the stands.

What about the ****ets in the canteen taking the lids of the water???

Happened to me, I looked back and went "Can I have the lids?" They said no, I said "That's ******* stupid" and the woman agreed. Twitter seemed to think it was to make cleanup easier, because they could just squish any bottles on the ground without having to stop to take off the cap.

It would indeed be easier to crush them without the cap on, but the same physics applies when they're used as projectiles. I thought it was quite commonplace to remove lids from bottles at sporting events, but I very rarely buy anything when I'm at a stadium.

imagine if we had multiple home grounds like NRL and C-town was one of them.

Would only work for me if our season ticket covers every home ground... I'd love to see a game at Penrith.. I would not love to go through the ******* waste of space proticket and pay an extra 13 bucks on top of my already fairly large output to see it.

Really? so you want the police to come and line up infront of the RBB every game when we do nothing wrong? the fence collapse was no body's fault, every game they are in front of us lining up, if they are doing it for "public safety" then why arent they doing it in other parts of the stadium? that is INCLUDING the away supporters end? i get it taht we threw flares and bottles, but we have shown that we have behaved, I dont really like to see them spying on us with their binoculars and or lining up in front of us and waiting for us to do something, and oh yeah i seen them watching us with the binoculars yesterday, they thought they were hiding but they really werent, i see them do the same at Parra stadium as well.

Why do we have to be treated like criminals? we have shown that we have behaved and no flares or smoke bombs have been used or thrown since the ban, whilst the other teams such as Sydney FC and Victory in their derby both used smoke bombs and in the Melbourne derby not only did they use smoke bombs, they also caused damaged to the seating areas and yet WE are the ones still being watched.....

100% correct. Should have seen my friend (who's often picked on by police through no fault of his own) going nuts when the police came out in front of the RBB. Thought he was going to get clubbed or something.

I understand why lids weren't provided for bottles and why cans were supposed to be poured into cups.

Unfortunately there are individuals that get-off in throwing objects into any crowd. Not saying WE would do that, but it's preventative measures.

On a lighter note, just watched the replay of the Hersi goal and lol'd when the fence broke. I'm assuming no one got hurt?

Also, a smirk from Ono when he was lining up that kick.. I'm thinking he understood the Ono chant.

Look, there were two positives from Campbelltown, we won and they had full strength beer.

    Agreed! ...albeit VB.

I was actually. Thought it was standard overreaction and thuggery. I've seen at least 4-5 'incidents' this season which have got me pretty upset.

Yeah I don't see why they need the cops there in front of us in such numbers. I really think the 'rent-a-cops' in the hi-viz do a decent job during the most part of the games anyway. 2-3 of them dealt with the biff near me pretty quickly.

The cops just line up and flex thier chest during half and full time. What do they think we're going to do? Rush the kids during half-time? Fk that. Half time is my rest time.. it's the only time I sit.

Power trip. I think there's some photo floating around showing police standing in front of some Wanderers fans, in some number, arms crossed and chest puffed out. Only problem is; most of the fans in the photo are kiddies.

I'll have a look around for it.

Only issue was that seccys kept doing their own thing before the game. They wouldnt let the drummers bring the drums in, then we were but we were meant to play it at certain areas, then we werent so we had to move and blah blah blahhh....confusing as well. Police kept interfering with them so there was a lot of miscommunication between the pub manager and police. Annoying as hell.

The response I got from the bar regarding the lids was to stop throwing full bottles. Told them it was stupid, bottles would b thrown lid or no lid

I think you misunderstood me, I’m saying lucky we have all our home games at Parra id hate to play at C-town regularly.

I know at parra stadium they dont take the lids from the outlets that have bottles becuase i buy a lemonade for a 4 y/o who takes the entire game to drink about half of it.

Yeap, it was really good having to watch that the opened bottle didnt get kocked over all night.

cops security just are not used to football fans so when they hear loud music chants in numbers they assume trouble. At the pub there was a few cops and security dealing with a local troublemaker and as soon as the smoke from the flair went off they all just left this troublemaker on his own and ran towards the march like it was WWIII!funny-gifs-diving-soccer.gif

HAHAHAHAHA.....so true. you should have seen 2 cops run to these two guys that were at the station after the match for no reason. all they did was hug each other and the cops thought they were punching on. cops were bunch of rookies.
