  • Bridge Gives Wanderers Four In A Row

    mack

A late Mark Bridge winner gave the Wanderers a deserved 2-1 win against Wellington tonight.

Western Sydney Wanderers continued their Spanish revolution with their fourth win on the trot, with marquee striker Federico Piovaccari scoring his second goal in as many games. 8 minutes in a Wanderers foul on the edge of the penalty area saw Michael McGlinchey take aim at Andrew Redmayne's goal. Stupidly for the Phoenix, with McGlinchey always going to shoot on goal, they sent forward both their central defenders, leaving them hopelessly outnumbered at the back.

When McGlinchey smashed his shot off the crossbar, it rebounded to the feet of Mitch Nichols, who aimed a ball forward for Dario Vidosic, the two covering Wellington defenders got involved in a horrible tangle and the ball rolled back to Nichols. The star attacking midfielder played a simple ball to Mark Bridge, with a two on the keeper situation Bridge held the ball long enough to draw the keeper, his lay off to Piovaccari gave him a tap-in to open the scoring.

15 minutes in and the Wanderers should have been two up. A corner for the Wanderers was played in towards the near post, Wellington cleared the ball into the path of Scott Jamieson, and the fullback fired a 25 yard rocket that whistled past Glen Moss, but referee Strebre Delovski inexplicably pulled the goal back for a Wellington foul, judging Piovaccari to have fouled the Wellington defence in the build up.

3 minutes later Wellington had their own illegitimate goal, only this time it was allowed by the referees. Maltese International Manny Muscat cut back onto his favoured right foot, fired across the keeper, through the legs of a team-mate and watched his shot fly past Redmayne. Replays showed McGlinchey was in an offside position and was positioned right in front of the goalkeeper, and should have seen the goal ruled out.

The second half built into the Wanderers favour as time ticked by, their momentum running towards a seemingly inevitable goal. It was Wanderers top goal scorer Mark Bridge who stepped up. A Wanderers corner flicked on at the near post, Bridge skipped past Roy Krishna, and with no Wellington player closing him down, took a touch to put the ball on his right foot to let him blast into the roof of the net from point blank range.

On another day the match would have ended 3-0, but in the end the Wanderers got the result they deserved, catapulting the Red & Black into 3rd position on the A-League Premiership ladder.

I'm usually quite critical of the RBB being flat and there is no doubt that it's not quite what it used to be, but... From where I was in 56 it was as good as it has been for a long, long time.

We were good early & from the 75th on we were fantastic, I particularly enjoyed our little ditty late on... seemed to suck the ball into the net.

In any case, I'm really not bothered what someone thinks they heard from half way tbh. You sit there so you can watch the game. Criticism from within holds much more water than someone's distant observations.

Great performance all round.  Ball control from the back is outstanding and improving further every week, the Juanderers are an inspired find.  Most improved goes to Fred, Popa must have torn him a new one over his offsides as his timing was excellent last night and there was a lot more sense of urgency in him.  NTS had a crack at playing every position except keeper and almost got himself one.

No idea what's up with the WST, they were silent for most of the game but when they did fire up they were louder than the RBB.  Then they would go silent again.  And anyone who thought the Nix supporters were louder than the RBB must be afflicted with a medical condition, I'm going to call it "yellow ear".

Bring on the Mariners for 5 in a row and Fred for three in three matches!

Generally a good performance against a well-organised opposition with some dangerous players going forward. We looked awesome in those opening stages and if Jamo's goal had been allowed it could have been a landslide. At the end of the day some of our previously dominant players didn't have their best games but it was still enough to earn a win in an entertaining game. Also pleasing was no yellow cards and a couple of nifty training ground set pieces which nearly came off. This team is seriously good to watch despite the odd brain fade !! A Wanderers v Victory G/F is definitely on the cards.

As for the atmosphere it was always been difficult for the early Saturday game. The RBB appeared desperately short of numbers but the stalwarts put in a good shift. Looking down from the Eastern Grandstand it's tragic that there's a splinter group stuck in the corner which lessens the impact of the RBB on the rest of the ground. I would also comment that the RBB appeared more cohesive at the Newcastle away game than last night. Must have to say that the atmosphere was good in my section with both regulars and 'occasionals' getting into the program. Maybe the grog helps !

Left at half time (in support of mates that were unfairly punted- nothing has changed in that regard). Luckily made it back to the pub for fathead's goal. What a beauty.

Waiting to watch the replay, but can anyone provide insight into our disallowed goal? Looked to be a fair goal from 55

Agreed, I was also in 56 and thought the we were pretty good, especially in the second half.

When I watched a replay of the game on TV, we still sounded good, but visually all the spare seats were very disappointing. It's hardly a new issue, but it annoys me immensely there are people who have RBB memberships just so they can say they are in the RBB, rather than using it for its intended purpose.

It's the numbers but what can you do. Everywhere else seats can be put up for resale or swapped easily. And the terrace is undersold. Given all those bans and the way we have had hardly any trouble I think there's justification for opening the gates again. It will never happen of course but it's time.... I always backed the closing for a couple of reasona but they're not really issues anymore. Won't happen though.

It needs to be said. I observed a few groups of people leaving (walking past Bay 25) at the 73 minute mark whilst 1-1. WTF???

Why bother coming. If this game didn't glue your eyes to the pitch for an entire 90 mins then I'm afraid nothing will....

Their loss.  Not much more can be said really.

~14k pretty good, at Parra that's almost 75% capacity, which is why I like playing out of a small stadium. Get that crowd at Allianz/Suncorp/Etihad and it looks empty as ****.

~Only time I head Wellington was about 20mins in when the RBB were between songs, which makes sense.

~If Bridge stays uninjured, Sotirio's not going to get another game, Bridge offers so much more and has an impact beyond pace.

~Our Midfield's the best in the league atm, so much control and coolness with the ball.

~At least Jamo could laugh of his disallowed goal,

~And finally, I find it sad that people have to take a pledge to not be violent against women :(

I'm wondering if Fred getting into a lot more space was due to Bridge on the pitch?  Sotirio runs fast but isn't much of a threat himself so Fred can be marked out of the game.  You can't give Bridge the same kind of room otherwise the end result is going to be some variation of that goal.  He also seems to have a much better understanding with Fred, case in point goal 1.

Our movement off the ball has improved and needs to continue to improve. This will come as the team continue to gel over the season. There we're a number of times last night when the play broke down a little because there was no one to pass to. Dimas and Andreau seemed to get a bit frustrated with this at times.

We are getting better game by game. Plenty for the casuals to look forward to IMO.

Someone's gotta say it - huge props to Popa. The man has completely evolved our playing style, it's exciting to watch and when it all comes together looks superb. Really showing that he isn't a one trick pony and perfectly capable of moulding players and tactics.

Whilst there is still room for improvement we are making strides every week and watching us play such positive football gives me little doubt to suggest we won't be in the top 4 come the end of the season. I'm glad the club stuck by him and glad those who wanted him out are beginning to eat their words.

    In Popa we trust

    Forza West Sydney

great post. very few managers can do what he is doing. win in one way and then completely revamp the style and win in another. even the best o/s managers tend to have a 'style' and then get players to fit their system. hugely impressive.

This is what the #poppaout bone heads fail to understand.

Impressed by commitment to go forward. It seemed to me with all of the time wasting that the Nux were doing with their goal kicks, they were happy to play for a draw, but we kept pushing and pressing forward and it paid off. Really proud of the way the lads are playing. We are controlling games unlike most of last season. We're playing positive, aggressive football that is yielding results :clapping:

    So happy  :yahoo:

Oh, re the atmosphere, the energy ebbed and flowed in parts in the RBB, but overall I thought they were good. I heard some of the crowd getting behind the new chant ( mostly lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo loooooooo, but hey its a start), and in the lead up to Bridgey's goal, loads were on their feet. That was electric when he scored.

Popa deserves praise. His recruiting is notches above last season. The technical ability the Spaniards bring is phenomenal, Dario has class even with an off day, Mitch and Jamo are direct and run all day and Piovaccari is coming good.

Plenty of credit is due our new assistant, definitely filling the void that we couldn't when Ante originally departed.

5 on the trot at Central Coast here we come.

Is there a player in the a-league who whinges/sooks about the refs decision more than Durante? Even for Pios goal he was calling for an offside.

There was one absolutely ridiculous one where he clattered someone (can't remember who) and then was waving his arms around in protest like an air traffic controller.

Good win against one of the better teams in the league. Bonevacia is pure class, amazing touch.

Certainly from within the RBB seemed loud yesterday.

Can the stands please note that when we do the WDWSF that we go a side each then the whole stadium

I was wondering about that. When the epic WDWSF's begun, the RBB used to point at both stands for a whole stadium response. And now in the stands we're not sure, because watching the RBB's hands they are pointing at the south stand (and for a while that was part of the WDWSF) so only about 25% of the people join in

I missed Saturdays cause the young bloke needed a bathroom run

I agree.... people are confused about the third WDWSF.

Makes sense that the third one is is for all three stands. I haven't been sure, and join in, but lots of others don't

First half was very good..total control.

Nix appeared to negate our passing game in the 2nd half. However we still managed to create enough to win. Great performance against a top 4 team.

Mitch, Bridge and Topor were our best.

Redmayne will have me going to hospital in an ambulance before sesons end.

I think Castalan needs more game time to be fully fit.
