  • Bulut Trains Sights On Brisbane

    mack

A Kerem Bulut brace has inspired the Wanderers to a 4-1 demolition of the Brisbane Roar tonight.

With both sides struggling to assemble a full strength squad, there were numerous changes and unusual deployments, in particular ostensible midfielder Luke Brattan being deployed as a central defender. Western Sydney took full advantage of Brattan's inexperience in the heart of defence with their first goal after 20 minutes. Romeo Castelen released Labinot Haliti on the left wing, with Brattan unable to decide if he should track the ball carrier or the inside runner, Haliti slid the ball through to Nikita Rukavytsya, his first time shot from a long way out beat the Roar keeper with speed and deadly accuracy.

5 minutes before the break the Roar struck back from a set piece. Brattan delivered a corner to the 6 yard box. Ante Covic stayed on his goal-line when he could have taken the ball easily, Aspropotamitis was marking Adam Sarota and won front position only to have the ball rebound off his leg and past Covic for the equaliser.

In the last minutes of the half Haliti was once again the architect of a goal. One the counter Haliti provided a brilliant cross field pass that found Castelen, who completely bamboozled Steven Lustica, the cutback to Bulut gave the striker a tap-in for a 2-1 lead that Western Sydney held at the break.

On the hour mark the visitors had control of the game and looked certain to take home all three points, Takahagi drew several defenders inside then played a reverse pass that found the intelligent run of Castelen. Crossing the ball along the face of the goal might have been the more usual option but Castelen elected to blast a strike high at the near post, Young getting a touch but not enough to keep out the shot.

Bulut secured his brace and the match for the Red & Black with a clinical finish in the dying embers of the game, La Rocca fired a through ball that split the Roar defence in half, Bulut had enough pace to beat the cover defence and he finished smartly at the near post.

Their 3rd win of the season lifts the Asian Champions off the bottom of the A-League ladder, and should give them confidence for their final fixtures of the season.

The Wanderers next match is against Perth Glory on Saturday the 28th of March in Perth.

I'm going to say this because nobody else will.  Gallaway had a pretty tidy game for us.  Personally think he's better on the left but came in and did the job on the right nicely this evening.

Shot of the night.  Haliti on that German player's ankle.  Top work sir.

romeo romeo, more than just a winger, give him a free pass to go anywhere he likes. Counter attack ala season 1 :woah:

I was thinking this, it really did remind me of a Season One away performance tonight.

    A few points:

    - Great win tonight boys

    - We played our A team whilst Brisbane rotate and it showed but they were really bad tonight. That CB pairing was horrible & allowed us more freedom

    - I think Popa threw a curve ball out in the media coming out and saying he was going to throw the youth players out there. It would have had an impact on there mindset & the players they might have risked coming into the game. Such a shame we didn't play our youngsters tonight because I feel that they would have beaten this poor side, as well as beating Newcastle on Saturday but oh well.

    - Another injury, Golec pulled his groin :nono:

    - This performance from us was good but Brisbane's was pretty poor. They looked tired, flat on there feet, no energy in there game and just poor all over the pitch. They were fortunate to get back in the game momentarily with a moment you have to blame on covic. This is the sort of performance you can expect when playing twice a week when you have injuries & players away on national duty. You feel for them but then again we are in exactly the same boat and the only other team that had a harder schedule.

    - It really puts our run last year at the end of S2 into perspective, you see the way we performed in every match with us doing enough in the ACL to get into the second stage whilst finishing second and making the grand final. Incredible effort

    - On our performance, we played very well in the first half but I noticed a big drop off in the second half before the third goal and then even more noticeable after the third goal. Clever stuff from the boys/manager to keep a bit in reserve and hopefully prevent any further injuries. Wrap the boys in cotton wool on Saturday against Perth & keep the players fresh for our ACL games only.

I'd guess and say that Popa will take the kids to Perth
