  • City Tear Maladroit Wanderers Apart

    mack

One of the worst performances by the Western Sydney Wanderers has seen them obliterated by finals bound Melbourne City 3-0 tonight in Melbourne.

The story of the game was heartless, inept football in both attack and defence, that gifted the game to Melbourne City with the Wanderers not managing a single shot on target in the 90 minutes. It was an abysmal display, one that should be utterly embarrassing for the players and the staff and raises extreme questions about the ongoing employment at the club from the CEO to the coaching staff and the players.

No team wearing the Red & Black of the Wanderers should ever play like that, with numerous players clearly looking disinterested. Our season is over with or without a finals match we'd lose to one of the Melbourne teams or Adelaide.

The only chance of the game for the Wanderers was Oriol Riera, one of the few who cared, hitting the bar from a corner that was played out for a corner by a City defender in the 40th minute.

From that corner Melbourne City took the lead with a counter-attack. After clearing the corner, it fell for Atkinson, he evaded Chris Ikonomidis, and Michael Thwaite failed to cut him down for a foul & a yellow card. Spraying the ball wide to Daniel Arzani, before Raul Llorente could close him down the young winger fired a cross into the 6 yard box. Thwaite once again failed to deal with the danger, the ball rolled into the path of Bruno Fornaroli who couldn't miss from 6 yards out.

The early stages of the second half came and went until Alvaro Cejudo completely failed his team by refusing to mark his designated player. To top off an abysmal performance as the Wanderers attacking pivot, Cejudo let Michael Jakobsen have the freedom of the penalty area to meet a cross from a short corner and blast it unerringly past Janjetovic again from 6 yards out.

Stefan Mauk completed the rout in the 66th minute with another penetrating attack from City. Hamill, Bonevacia & Lustica did their best impression of traffic cones as Mauk & Fornaroli played a one two, Fornaroli with a backheel that Mauk ran on and fired a first time shot into the bottom corner.

It was as much as City deserved and far less than the Wanderers did. I've seen a lot of bad performances in the past few years but this one ranks well up there. You could count with a few fingers the players who were playing for the shirt and most of them looked disinterested even before City hit the front. Combined with schoolboy errors in defence, a midfield trio who found the sideline or a city player more than they found their own team-mates, and a squad who couldn't even manage a single shot on target. Marc Tokich may look back on his A-League debut fondly, but it will not be because of the result of the game. That was one of the only high spots of the match and in the end it was little more than a 10 minute cameo.

Barring the miracle of miracles this team will either make the finals and lose in week one or finish 7th or 8th. The players, the coaching staff and the higher up club management need to take a good long hard look at how they've let the Champions of Asia fall from grace this far. It might not be the disaster zone that exists for the Mariners or Wellington Phoenix, but this club should be a top four club every season without fail, not a collection of awkward, bumbling, incompetents completely detached from the fans who pay good money to watch this garbage, running around with no pride in their performance.

Next week away to the Victory looks like being a turkey shoot for Melbourne and one I'm not looking forward to. Gombau needs to give the players a kick in the arse and send them on some old school treatment to remind them to earn their money off and on the pitch. Start with 200 laps of the training pitch at lunchtime tomorrow and go from there.

Absolute garbage and was expecting us to be fresh and put up a fight other than this tiki taka back pass it and not even get it near the box to create anything.

Serious questions to be had by all at the club and time to throw on some young guys who wants to attack through the midfield as roly and lustica do nothing.

Thanks for ruining my Saturday night with that crap WSW

Can Gombau turn it around next season ? That is the question.

I still believe as long as we’re playing out of SOP it’s just going to be more misery.

Also, is there a ol ayer mutiny or something, I don’t understand...we were bad... i mean BAD. I can’t even comprehend how terrible it was. And that’s after a weeks rest to freshen up. Bizarre really.

Nobody seems to give a ****. After all these heavy defeats it’s all just like meh. I can’t see anything like this going on at a club like Victory or Sydney.

    What is going on?

All sacking would do is blame Gombau for the failures of Popa to recruit a squad who can't pass the ball 5 meters unless it's backwards or to an opposition player. Would it improve our chances next year. Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows. If the owners fail to get overseas targets again (or perhaps, fail to give them the money required) like they did before they signed Gombau, we might end up with someone worse like Paul Okon.

What has he done to show he’s the guy for the job? He might be, but he has in no way demonstrated that he is

apart from winning the very competitive Hong Kong league

he would be good at the mariners youth development possession philosophies... no pressure to actually win anything

i am more than happy to blame gombau once he has his own squad and if we are this **** then but he has had to deal with popa's failures and i respect popa a lot but 80% of his signings have been failures, not always his fault like with saba who were talented but had a **** attitude but the likes of jumpei.......where the hell did he see the talent there?

well lets start with getting rid of jumpei, that was a ******* great move, he has a bunch of other **** players to get rid of all of which popa signed but he started well there, he has signed some great players who sadly have not started playing for us yet

    his signings are far better

Is it potentially justifiable? We're looking at 6th or 7th, out in Week 1 of the finals. You can justify sacking the coach because of those results. I feel it would just be scapegoating Gombau and let the players & owners who failed to get their first choice manager because they were too cheap, off the hook.

Popa wouldn't accept the team to play like that despite how crap our roster is and u can see these guys don't want to give 100% to Gombau. I was prepared to give Gombau a go with his own squad but a showing like this and other games makes me question his ability to coach a team and get them motivated.

yes popa has been gone for a long time but his terrible squad still lingers on

and i am not claiming that wasnt amazing but it still was not an excuse for us almost getting the wooden spoon, as i said no hate on popa but we have had far worse times with him than gombau, and i was never one of those popaout chumps, that performance was beyond insipid but people who claim we never had matches like with popa are just wearing popa tinted glasses

The RBB merged with WST for the night and we shared chants and banter until the second half when the on field capitulation cast a shadow such that we let City do the Poznan and we sat. It was a one night stand marriage of convenience for the Actives and despite City taunts no one took a backward step. I think Popa could make something from mediocre players and tonight they were mediocre players once again. I wasn't dissapointed because we have shown nothing this year except for game one v Perth. We were tonight just as bad as we have been all year.

    Why stop at blaming popa.

Ange is to blame. Ever since he selected risdon for the socceroos he has been shite.

What about the airport in London? Those pricks keep letting herd back there when he is meant to be playing for us.

Who was cejudo's u/12s coach - useless bastard didn't teach him how to pass properly.

Oh and bridgey's knee surgeon. Since he had his knee done he is really slow. Man is that guy a dud.

But let's make sure we don't assign any responsibility to the guy who picks the team, trains the players 5 days a week, organises the strategy and is meant to motivate them. That performance can't possibly be his fault.

    Ffs.

Just pay milicic whatever he wants like we should have done in the first place.

    GUMBY OUT

stop being ******* ridiculous, this squad is still ******* 90% popa's all the useless ****s he signed we are stuck with

popa signs yet another garbage squad and leaves 3 ******* seconds before the season starts and we are stuck with this pile of ****, ******* jesus himself couldnt coach himself out of this **** situation

I described Brisbane in another post as dogshit, but Roly re-defined the word last night. He is surely up there for dud of the year with Cejudo. The rare times we had a chance to counter-attack, he stood on the ball for an eternity before finding a way to send it back to Vedran.

You'd think they were getting paid by how many kicks Snake has per match.
