    City Tear Maladroit Wanderers Apart

    mack

One of the worst performances by the Western Sydney Wanderers has seen them obliterated by finals bound Melbourne City 3-0 tonight in Melbourne.

The story of the game was heartless, inept football in both attack and defence, that gifted the game to Melbourne City with the Wanderers not managing a single shot on target in the 90 minutes. It was an abysmal display, one that should be utterly embarrassing for the players and the staff and raises extreme questions about the ongoing employment at the club from the CEO to the coaching staff and the players.

No team wearing the Red & Black of the Wanderers should ever play like that, with numerous players clearly looking disinterested. Our season is over with or without a finals match we'd lose to one of the Melbourne teams or Adelaide.

The only chance of the game for the Wanderers was Oriol Riera, one of the few who cared, hitting the bar from a corner that was played out for a corner by a City defender in the 40th minute.

From that corner Melbourne City took the lead with a counter-attack. After clearing the corner, it fell for Atkinson, he evaded Chris Ikonomidis, and Michael Thwaite failed to cut him down for a foul & a yellow card. Spraying the ball wide to Daniel Arzani, before Raul Llorente could close him down the young winger fired a cross into the 6 yard box. Thwaite once again failed to deal with the danger, the ball rolled into the path of Bruno Fornaroli who couldn't miss from 6 yards out.

The early stages of the second half came and went until Alvaro Cejudo completely failed his team by refusing to mark his designated player. To top off an abysmal performance as the Wanderers attacking pivot, Cejudo let Michael Jakobsen have the freedom of the penalty area to meet a cross from a short corner and blast it unerringly past Janjetovic again from 6 yards out.

Stefan Mauk completed the rout in the 66th minute with another penetrating attack from City. Hamill, Bonevacia & Lustica did their best impression of traffic cones as Mauk & Fornaroli played a one two, Fornaroli with a backheel that Mauk ran on and fired a first time shot into the bottom corner.

It was as much as City deserved and far less than the Wanderers did. I've seen a lot of bad performances in the past few years but this one ranks well up there. You could count with a few fingers the players who were playing for the shirt and most of them looked disinterested even before City hit the front. Combined with schoolboy errors in defence, a midfield trio who found the sideline or a city player more than they found their own team-mates, and a squad who couldn't even manage a single shot on target. Marc Tokich may look back on his A-League debut fondly, but it will not be because of the result of the game. That was one of the only high spots of the match and in the end it was little more than a 10 minute cameo.

Barring the miracle of miracles this team will either make the finals and lose in week one or finish 7th or 8th. The players, the coaching staff and the higher up club management need to take a good long hard look at how they've let the Champions of Asia fall from grace this far. It might not be the disaster zone that exists for the Mariners or Wellington Phoenix, but this club should be a top four club every season without fail, not a collection of awkward, bumbling, incompetents completely detached from the fans who pay good money to watch this garbage, running around with no pride in their performance.

Next week away to the Victory looks like being a turkey shoot for Melbourne and one I'm not looking forward to. Gombau needs to give the players a kick in the arse and send them on some old school treatment to remind them to earn their money off and on the pitch. Start with 200 laps of the training pitch at lunchtime tomorrow and go from there.

and i am not claiming that wasnt amazing but it still was not an excuse for us almost getting the wooden spoon,

It kind of was really, the players were physically spent from  all the travel, then add on the Club World Cup travel too to that. FFA schedule was ridiculously stupid too with trips to Wellington just after getting back from Asia. No Australian club is likely to ever do it again.

sure beat him with the season 5 stick but I think he probably deserves a free pass for season 3 oh adding in that he then went away rebuilt the team and took us to grand final the following year

Is it potentially justifiable? We're looking at 6th or 7th, out in Week 1 of the finals. You can justify sacking the coach because of those results. I feel it would just be scapegoating Gombau and let the players & owners who failed to get their first choice manager because they were too cheap, off the hook.

I agree the club and players are not blame free here.. The club put the wrong guy in or at least the wrong guy for the situation

With Popa's squad and Foxe in charge we were not great but we weren't embarrassed and did not lose. Since then it's been embarrassing both on and off the field.

WRT the article, the players were 'uninterested' not 'disinterested'.

God bless my girlfriend. With 20 mins to go she was willing to wait for the game to finish to go and get some dinner. I thanked her and got the car keys ASAP.

Thats one of the most boring games I’ve ever seen. Looked like there was about 10 people there too.

popa signs yet another garbage squad and leaves 3 ******* seconds before the season starts and we are stuck with this pile of ****, ******* jesus himself couldnt coach himself out of this **** situation

Yeah..but you know with jesus he would pull out a neat trick like making one kebab feed the whole stadium, or perform a miracle like making a pass go more than a meter. Pretty sure he would be crucified as much as Gomby in the end though.

"perform a miracle like making a pass go more than a meter."

Passing, did someone mention passing? FMD I have seen better delivery from a dead Postman.

To use an F1 analogy when Popa handed over the keys Gumby discovered it was to a Datsun 180B.

stop being ******* ridiculous, this squad is still ******* 90% popa's all the useless ****s he signed we are stuck with

Yes, you say most of this squad is Popa's but you have to ask the question is how is Gombao training these guys. For most of the season you have seen us play a mediocre second half and play so many games without any passion.

In season three we lost 17 games but we did play with passion and heart.

Why is it the worse we get under gombau the less people seem to think it has anything to do with him?

popa's squad under Foxxe. popa's squad under Gombau. If course. Now it makes sense.

You missed one. We may not have to endure the pain of a finals game.

I think after last night I am finally convinced in #GombauOut

The way we are playing is just so depressing and awful, and it feels like every other game we get pumped. The players look like they could hardly care less about the game; what does Gombau say to them in the dressing room? The amount of passing around the back to no end...

Patience. Patience. How long does it take? It's already been 4 or so months and we play as if Gombau was appointed yesterday. What kind of coach is he if he can't maximize the potential of the players he already has? Very skeptical about how he will perform next season.

I actually got a lot out of last night...late in the second half I finally realised:

If ET can levitate...why didn't he fly into the ship at the start??

Maybe the ship is a lot bigger than you think it is, and thus it's much farther away than ET's levitation powers can reach.

Mack's been on his MSWord thesaurus again  To be fair I did the same thing at Uni to pimp up my reports, going through and changing words for more high brow alternatives lol

It says something about how poorly our season has gone that Mack’s worked his way down the adjective list far enough to get to maladroit.

I hopeful of the use of the word 'clodhoppers' after the MV game next weekend. :xnod:

Well Mack may as well start early for next weekend, we gonna get smashed.

Clodhoppers was actually my #2 choice.

If we get smashed again next week I will use it.
