  • Clodhopping Wanderers Sink To 7th

    mack

Brisbane Roar have overtaken the Wanderers for the last spot in the A-League Final series after the Wanderers failed to defeat Melbourne Victory after the Roar overturned the Mariners earlier in the night.

A crazy first half saw a player from both sides sent off late after the intervention of the VAR, in the second Melbourne Victory cruised to an eventual 3-1 win.

After their insipid display last week against Melbourne City, Josep Gombau's men acted like they wanted to be on the pitch for once. After their failure to get a shot on target last week, that ignoble stat was beaten inside 45 seconds with a long range shot by Chris Ikonomidis. Kosta Barbarouses forced a great save out of Vedran Janjetovic in the 20th minute, the keeper flying to his left to turn the fierce shot over the bar.

It looked for all money that Ikonomidis would have put the visiting side one up in the 28th minute, he took a short pass from Alvaro Cejudo, weaved his way through the Victory defence and was denied when his through the legs shot caught the legs of Lawrence Thomas before it was cleared out of danger.

Unfortunately, minutes later Victory were in front against the run of play. Chris Evans awarded a free kick against Keanu Baccus for a push in the back on James Troisi. Leroy George stood over the ball and hammered a shot into the wall, it deflected off the head of Brendan Hamill and it left Janjetovic for dead as he was going the other way.

The bizarre stoppage time period began with a delightful goal from Alvaro Cejudo who finally looked like the marquee he is being paid to be. Riera knocked the ball down for Ikonomidis, and his touch found Lustica, after a lucky pinball rebound off Thomas Deng, Lustica passed over to Cejudo who lobbed over the onrushing Thomas, with just enough power & direction to keep it under the bar and away from the last ditch attempted karate clearance from Deng. It was a cultured finish, and one that will have Wanderers fans thinking where was that all this season?

Deep into stoppage time the Wanderers gave a corner, as Michael Thwaite completely misplayed a simply backpass from the midfield. Having earlier been carded after he stuck out a leg to cancel a Victory counter-attack, Thwaite was marched down the tunnel by Chris Evans after he rugby tackled Rhys Williams to the ground and was given a second yellow. He would feel hard done by as replays showed Oriol Riera being hacked from behind to start the counter-attack that Thwaite ended up stopping at the cost of the first card. Regardless of another example of poor officiating the experienced central defender should have known better and left Williams flailing on his own. There was yet more drama as the VAR took 5 long minutes reviewing the play, no-one in the stands, or watching at home on television had any idea of what was going on.

With the lack of information given by the officials when VAR reviews take place, it was assumed they were going over the Thwaite foul. Instead, they were examining an incident as the players lined up on the edge of the penalty area. Kosta Barbarouses was shown a red card of his own for a stomp on Keanu Baccus. Berisha eventually stepped up in the 51st minute to send Janjetovic the wrong way. Both the red card and the goal were historically the latest such events in the first half of an Australian top flight football game.

Western Sydney might have started the first half well, but with both teams a man down it was Victory in the lead who took control of the game. George & Terry Antonis combined to put the ex-Wanderers midfielder on the by-line at the edge of the penalty area. Josh Risdon jogged over to confront him, but stood off and watch Antonis stopped to being the ball back on his right foot and measured a cross that flew over the penalty area, finding fullback Deng who ran on and blasted a volley that flew into the top corner, a rocket that will go well in the goal of the year awards.

From that point on the Wanderers were at supreme risk of conceding on the counter, while doing little to threaten the scoreline. It was only the offside flag & and the far post that kept the scoreline at 3-1. Leroy George weaved another piece of magic after Kearyn Baccus lost the ball, George ran into the paddock he left Hamill for dead with a cut inside and his curling shot struck the post with a clang.

With just two games left in the regular season, next weeks clash between Western Sydney and Brisbane Roar on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Homebush looks set to determine the 6th place finisher. Picking a winner there looks tough, but the Wanderers will take some heart at their level of effort if not their technical application from tonight.

Of course it is true Gombau will be coach next season with own his selected team and lets support him in full to achieve a minimum of a top 3 spot for 2018/2019 season

Happy cannot believe anybody would seriously think he would be out. :xmad:

Bye for now from Happy :)

I can take the fairy-floss optimism, Happy, but i can't handle the 3rd person reference.

    EmMac is not impressed!

Nah Em - leave Happy be!

He's such a contrast to most of us here most of the time. :xnod:

PS I'd love for Happy to post over on the What Floats My Boat Thread - when he was Extra HAPPY about something! That'd be really worth tuning in to!  ;)

I didn’t think we were bad at all. Was an entertaining game for the neutral. I personally didn’t think either red should’ve been given

Remember the days when the word 'flog' was banned on WSF because there were so many supporters that those who weren't the OG were considered flogs?

There was an overuse of the word flog.

Going to Bossi to **** on the coach after just your second major contribution to the season ranks pretty high up the Saba bitch scale.

I can only imagine what Gombau would say if he opened up with both barrels on Cejudo, our midfield "marquee".

We played pretty well until things took a turn and we lost a man. I feel sorry for our coach, getting the blame for losing again but he can't control stupid mistakes like what Thwaite done and for our defenders to stop marking their man.

But from what I watched in the first 20-30 minutes, we put some pressure on Victory.

Hi All Happy here again :)

EmMac (stupid name) I am proud of being Happy

WSWboro (another stupid name) in contrast I have been very successful in building a Multi Million dollar business by being Happy and having Happy people around me.

I am a dyed in the wool Westie born and bred here and never left,  played soccer in the west,  supported Marconi in their hey day and hurt badly every time The wanderers lose but I don't get on this forum and bemoan the world around us I turn to next week or next year and move on with being happy.

In my view there are few bemoaners here that need to take a good long look at themselves and get behind the great club and stop being fair weather sailors.

Bye for now from Happy :)

'I've found that most here are not bemoaners but actually are passionate about the club and want the team to succeed, nothing more than that. You don't have to agree with anyone about coaches or tactics and I'm glad it's not a conga line of "happy" clappers and the debate about our team is robust and in the most part respectful.

Most here have been in from the beggining so the comment about "fair weather fans" isn't really justified. We all feel the pain when we lose.

    bossi is a muppet.

every single article he has written about the wanderers is an attempt to undermine the club in some way.

    True but what bit of

Wanderers' game plan did not take into account the opponent. Possession-based football has underpinned the Wanderers' style under Gombau but Cejudo believes his team need to be more adaptable to game situations and their opponents, rather than dogmatically sticking to one philosophy.”

    Is wrong?

Cejudo has spoken out of turn here, Bossi has twisted it a bit. But basically he’s not the first to say or hint that they don’t agree with Gombau tactics

Cornthwaite did it (and did the honarable thing and got out rather than snipe)

Oriol, Llorente to a degree Bridge

    apparently though it’s Popas fault

Exactly, I don’t necessarily agree with everyone on here, but I wouldn’t question their support (other than the smurf wind up guy)

    true

I was talking more in general with bossi than this specific article. its hard to take anything he writes about us at face value after a dozen or so pre-derby 'Chinese club interested in Popa', 'Bridge exploring other a-league options' articles aimed at de-stabilising the club

It’s ok he’s largely redundant now, we are more than capable of destabilising ourselves without any additional assistance

Hmm. Might also be that it was a huge deflection, like in Tennis if it comes off the net they don't celebrate. He didn't celebrate  that much for his goal against the Mariners. I've looked at a few of his goals and he's not a flamboyant celebratory guy.

Maybe not Mack, but he is certainly one hell of a player! There surely would be at least one Marquee spot we should make available to have a chance of signing him. Of the four possible signings that Gremio mentioned, I have most doubt about Kamau. Fitzgerald will always give 110%, but has been given very little opportunity by the coach, who would vie with Arnold for coming up with the most predictable selections and substitutions. It is as if he has a closed mind when it comes to players changing/improving. No wonder some want to leave.

My biggest concern is for my (traditionally) all-time favourite WSW player. Sadly, I do not think Mark Bridge is anywhere near the player and influence he was a couple of seasons ago. Unfortunately, past a certain point, players (and probably human beings too) do not keep getting better.

    • It's no longer up to us, except that we play first before City so we can at least put the pressure on them instead of it being killed if City played first & won. If we lose or draw we're out even if City lose to Western United. If we win and City lose, we're in. If we win and City draw, we go through on the Games Won tiebreaker. If we win and City win, we're out.
    • Clisby totally useless metres in front of him of space, pass the ball to the opposition  Kittel couldn't look less arsed about football if he turned up with no boots pt shinnies
    • Another season nearly done and another season of disappointment. Ah Well....it is what it is. We pay the price for gutting a good squad. If Rudan stays I can see another mass cleanout coming. It isn't good. It has to stop....but will it.? By god we are a basket case aren't we.
