  • Clodhopping Wanderers Sink To 7th

    mack

Brisbane Roar have overtaken the Wanderers for the last spot in the A-League Final series after the Wanderers failed to defeat Melbourne Victory after the Roar overturned the Mariners earlier in the night.

A crazy first half saw a player from both sides sent off late after the intervention of the VAR, in the second Melbourne Victory cruised to an eventual 3-1 win.

After their insipid display last week against Melbourne City, Josep Gombau's men acted like they wanted to be on the pitch for once. After their failure to get a shot on target last week, that ignoble stat was beaten inside 45 seconds with a long range shot by Chris Ikonomidis. Kosta Barbarouses forced a great save out of Vedran Janjetovic in the 20th minute, the keeper flying to his left to turn the fierce shot over the bar.

It looked for all money that Ikonomidis would have put the visiting side one up in the 28th minute, he took a short pass from Alvaro Cejudo, weaved his way through the Victory defence and was denied when his through the legs shot caught the legs of Lawrence Thomas before it was cleared out of danger.

Unfortunately, minutes later Victory were in front against the run of play. Chris Evans awarded a free kick against Keanu Baccus for a push in the back on James Troisi. Leroy George stood over the ball and hammered a shot into the wall, it deflected off the head of Brendan Hamill and it left Janjetovic for dead as he was going the other way.

The bizarre stoppage time period began with a delightful goal from Alvaro Cejudo who finally looked like the marquee he is being paid to be. Riera knocked the ball down for Ikonomidis, and his touch found Lustica, after a lucky pinball rebound off Thomas Deng, Lustica passed over to Cejudo who lobbed over the onrushing Thomas, with just enough power & direction to keep it under the bar and away from the last ditch attempted karate clearance from Deng. It was a cultured finish, and one that will have Wanderers fans thinking where was that all this season?

Deep into stoppage time the Wanderers gave a corner, as Michael Thwaite completely misplayed a simply backpass from the midfield. Having earlier been carded after he stuck out a leg to cancel a Victory counter-attack, Thwaite was marched down the tunnel by Chris Evans after he rugby tackled Rhys Williams to the ground and was given a second yellow. He would feel hard done by as replays showed Oriol Riera being hacked from behind to start the counter-attack that Thwaite ended up stopping at the cost of the first card. Regardless of another example of poor officiating the experienced central defender should have known better and left Williams flailing on his own. There was yet more drama as the VAR took 5 long minutes reviewing the play, no-one in the stands, or watching at home on television had any idea of what was going on.

With the lack of information given by the officials when VAR reviews take place, it was assumed they were going over the Thwaite foul. Instead, they were examining an incident as the players lined up on the edge of the penalty area. Kosta Barbarouses was shown a red card of his own for a stomp on Keanu Baccus. Berisha eventually stepped up in the 51st minute to send Janjetovic the wrong way. Both the red card and the goal were historically the latest such events in the first half of an Australian top flight football game.

Western Sydney might have started the first half well, but with both teams a man down it was Victory in the lead who took control of the game. George & Terry Antonis combined to put the ex-Wanderers midfielder on the by-line at the edge of the penalty area. Josh Risdon jogged over to confront him, but stood off and watch Antonis stopped to being the ball back on his right foot and measured a cross that flew over the penalty area, finding fullback Deng who ran on and blasted a volley that flew into the top corner, a rocket that will go well in the goal of the year awards.

From that point on the Wanderers were at supreme risk of conceding on the counter, while doing little to threaten the scoreline. It was only the offside flag & and the far post that kept the scoreline at 3-1. Leroy George weaved another piece of magic after Kearyn Baccus lost the ball, George ran into the paddock he left Hamill for dead with a cut inside and his curling shot struck the post with a clang.

With just two games left in the regular season, next weeks clash between Western Sydney and Brisbane Roar on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Homebush looks set to determine the 6th place finisher. Picking a winner there looks tough, but the Wanderers will take some heart at their level of effort if not their technical application from tonight.

We will beat Brisbane and scrape into the 6 next week. There’s no way we are losing three in a row. Not that it really matters when we crash out in the opening round of the finals.

I keep hearing Gombau won’t be here next season, yet new signings are already well in the works for next season? No idea what’s going on behind the scenes.

Our defence is a shambles. There’s a reason the best goals of the season have been against us and you also just need to look at Vedrans save count.

Another game against Victory another loss. Our stats against them are equally appalling as against Sydney. Why do people refer to us a powerhouse club when all we do is get smashed ?

Is it a severe lack of winning metality or are we still paying for our ACL fortune?

According to Simon Hill he doesn't make the finals bye, bye....apparently.  The standard has been set....recruit a heap of duds who can't pass or play with passion and then blame the manager. The new manager, regardless of who it is or who is in the squad is going to be judged by the same standard.

If they are gonna fire Gombau we'll know within 2 weeks because we'll have lost to the Roar and/or Adelaide and not made the finals. Or 3 weeks if for some reason finishing 6th was good enough to have not sacked him already but losing the first week of the finals to a Melbourne team isn't enough to stop him getting sacked. In any case, if he goes it'll be by the end of the month.

The last search took a month, this one might be a bit faster if they are really planning on sacking Gombau, they'll be going through those resumes again and might even have a shortlist setup already.

Appoint the new manager on May 1, he'll have about 2 months for recruitment & planning before the players are back training around the start of July with an eye to an FFA Cup Round of 32 game at the end of the month. Kick off early October, 5 months from May 1.

For me whoever is in charge, as they'll either be Gombau or a guy appointed upwards of 4 months before the first round, they will have marquee & foreign spots open, they have room for new Australian players, they will hopefully still have Riera to build the attack around. Sydney FC will be under a new coach. Melbourne Victory will probably have lost their best player. Newcastle will probably fold back into the bottom half of the table.

That means they should be expected to accomplish results immediately:

    • 12 points by Round 6. Your job is to win games. There's 18 points available in 6 games. Get them or your're done. I don't care if the draw is Victory, SFC, City, Victory, SFC, City in a row all away. Beat them. You have two losses available. If you lose Round 1, 2 and 3 you're sacked.
    • 26 points by Round 13, which is about when the Transfer Window opens. Sydney FC managed 34 points by Round 13 this year. That's 8 points less than the target.
    • Dropping out of the top 4 means you go immediately.
    • Make the FFA Cup Semi-Final.

No more "better side but lost".

No more "players didn't put in effort".

No more "we might have only won a single game, but we had 5 competitive draws" like we had at the start of this season. Draws don't win Premierships.

No more "we were unlucky, but the results will come".

No more "we're going to win the grand final" when we're in 5th.

JT's role as CEO should be linked into these results. His tenure in the last 2 years has been abysmal off the field and if he fails again to oversee a team who can get the job done he needs to go.

    Oh Mack!

     :lol::lol:

    You really did it!

    You used "clodhopping"!

I didn't think they deserved the title so much this game, though...but it made me literally lol.

    :D:D

Just like a player can get a yellow card for persistent fouling, let's call this persistent clodhopping.

This is the issue with VAR. Red cards can be reviewed but not yellows, even though they can become red. Thwaite's first yellow was a yellow worthy tackle, however he stopped a break away (something he should have done last week) that only occurred because the referee missed a clear foul on Riera. Everyone will bang on about how the VAR got the decisions right but it's whole purpose is to correct mistakes, and it's "correct" decisions came directly from mistakes. And the trade off for this "accuracy" is five minute delays with everyone at home and in the stadium scratching their heads.

If the rumors are true that we are in the process of signing some of the old Adelaide players I cannot see them sacking Gambou....then again who knows !

One this that hasn't been mentioned is that we played so much better without Bonivacia and we also didn't miss Bridge.

    Now...where's FCB's evaluation??

Funny how that happened when Roly was signed to be our attacking midfielder.

lol honestly its really weird because i never recall him being this negative, yes i remember him being a donkey but he always tried to go forwards and yes i know some people its all gombau's fault but no, i just dont think he has the confidence atm

Ok guys so spoke with a mate who knows people at the club including someone who runs the club and he is led to believe that gombau will not be sacked and WSW board are happy for him to build his squad for next season, so from what I've herd he will be here next season.

dont know if your source is reliable but i hope this is true, yes i know he is pretty much satan around here to some but i want to see what he can do with his squad

I don’t think he’s Satan, and I think he would have done better with “his own squad” but and I know some on here will disagree (and that’s cool as it all about opinions) he’s not done enough (by a long way) to prove that he is the best bet for next year. We should be going with whatever is the best bet for next year, and if we could get the dude from Adelaide (for example) then we should.

I don’t think it’s ALL his fault, and I do think the squad had issues when he took over, and the players have shafted him.

But again he’s had since round 6 (and Jan)  and we are still worse than when he arrived, fault or not it doesn’t inspire confidence that he is the Best guy for the gig.

As for “bar settting” too 6 should be absolute minimum for this club, we aren’t the Mariners (or at least we claim not to be)

I did feel sorry for him last night, finally we play with some effort and then Thwaite goes and gives a corner away from a back pass and then while on a yellow rugby tackles somone in the box, in injury time after just equalising. Clodhopping? I was close to using another word beginning with C

    Hi Happy here again :)

Of course it is true Gombau will be coach next season with own his selected team and lets support him in full to achieve a minimum of a top 3 spot for 2018/2019 season

Happy cannot believe anybody would seriously think he would be out. :xmad:

Bye for now from Happy :)

So the players have shafted him...!  Well, there it is in a nutshell........What's he supposed to do then ? Put the boots on himself and go out and show them how to pass, defend, score ?

Sorry, but if elements of the team did seek to undermine Gombau from the start then he was/is in a no win situation. The ego and attitude of some of our players is a disgrace. To delibately undermine a coach with disregard for the fans who pay their hard earned for a membership (and who have to attend matches in a shithouse venue), is beyond pathetic. They do not understand what being a professional is.

If he ( Gumby ) goes I hope the majority of players have to follow him out the door. I hope he stays, but the results say otherwise.

Oh and did anyone see that leroy didn't celebrate his goal he scored that was weird he almost like stood there as if he scored against the team set to sign him as marquee next year hmm weird....

Hmm. Might also be that it was a huge deflection, like in Tennis if it comes off the net they don't celebrate. He didn't celebrate  that much for his goal against the Mariners. I've looked at a few of his goals and he's not a flamboyant celebratory guy.

Yep....Victory will want to keep him at all costs. One of the best signings by any club this season........

nah i understand your viewpoint, its the gombauout fanatics i was talking about tbh, honestly a lot of people seem to know more about what is going on behind the scenes than i do but for me his signings have all been extremely promising, no one knows if next season is going to be a great season for us and i know he has had plenty of time to stamp his style on the club but for me the signings are more important than the coaches, if there are players who cant accept the new coach then show them the door, gombau gets a squad and a pre season to sort out issues, if next season is poor then he can go out of the same door all the players who cant accept him as coach can go.

people seem to forget the same things gombau is criticised for is the same thing popa was always criticised for(cant get along with players, only has one plan and if that fails he has nothing, weird starting line ups ect), some of our performances under him have been pathetic but same with popa, right now it looks like gombau faces a pretty hostile environment so once those hostile elements are removed we will see how much all this calms down, i dont remember him having any issues with any players at adelaide maybe its because they were not a bunch of pansies who tried to undermine their coach and actually tried to play football

Last week he celebrated abit but if the tards don't lock him up we will be knocking at his front door anyway leroy will be in red and black next season and I'm pretty confident he will be as well as Jordy buijs I don't know why But i have a stern feeling they will both end up in red and black next season. Also Jordy buijs for me looks unhappy at ESFC I don't know I remember last season he was happy and stuff but this season looks well down and looking at his reaction to the Mariners goal he didn't look to happy and had a go at one of his teammates, and could be unhappy for not being selected for the acl so....

    Not that dickhead.

Wheres that picture of the flog standing in front of the cove flogs, that type of arrogant flog doesn't fit in here.

I need to write flog one last time, I feel better now.
