  • Club World Cup Ends With Shootout Loss

    mack

The debut of the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Club World Cup ended on a losing note after Es Setif emerged victorious after a see-sawing 90 minutes that finished 2-2 and was immediately followed by a penalty shootout that ES Setif won 5-4.

Playing a mix of youth and first team players, the Wanderers came out of the blocks strongly and took the lead in just the fourth minute as Romeo Castelen found the back of the net for the first time with his new club. Labinot Haliti's mazy run lead to a lay-off to the flying winger who blasted a screamer from the edge of the area that gave the African Champions keeper no chance.

After the break it took 5 minutes for Setif to equalise through a Daniel Mullen own goal and another 7 to take the lead through Abdelmalik Ziaya who took advantage of statuesque Wanderers defending to toepoke past Dean Bouzanis.

With 2 minutes left in regulation time, Vitor Saba also notched his first goal for the Wanderers, a wonderful free kick. With that the game went directly into penalties with no extra time.

It was not a quality shootout, with Djahnit, Labinot Haliti & Ziaya all missing in the initial set of shots. Ziaya had his attempt saved by Bouzanis, who then confidentially stepped up and out of his goal to try and win the shootout, only to have his effort saved by his counterpart. In the end if was Seyi Adeleke who became the villain, blazing his shot wide, Zerara slotting home to give his side a 5-4 shootout win and fifth place in the Club World Cup.

Henry was good, really good, but if you think he was better than Zidane you've got rocks in your head.

Arsenal fans, what do you expect?

They are still living of the invincibles period lol

Henry is a poor mans Zidane :)

Real Madrid fans, what do you expect?

Still living in the days when they weren't Barcelona's bitch.

Zidane is only better than Al Shamrani because his headbutt actually made contact. :D

Hahaha, clearly were still living in the shadows of Barca, I mean why else would we have won the UCL earlier this year and dominated Barca and eat them 3-1 ;)

On the other hand, when was the last time you beat united?

Henry wishes he could score goals like Zidane, he tried and failed miserably, that's why he had to cheat and use his hand to help France beat Ireland......

    • Best shown by a chance Toure had when an Indonesian player had fallen over, he had a simple ball about 10 meters that would have put one of our attackers clean through for a one on one. He over-hit it and ruined the chance. Also falling for the same old Asian team diving & time wasting, by giving away stupid fouls to let them fall over and sit on the ground for minutes. 11 minutes stoppage time is probably half what it deserved.
    • Yet again, a failure of pace and power football over technically skilled football in on display in the Olyroos vs Indonesia.  We need to develop skills over pace at all levels
    • Milanovic & Brook should have been on the next flight home at half-time.
