  • Controversy Reigns In Wanderers Derby Defeat

    mack

Five goals and a red card produced numerous talking points as the Western Sydney Wanderers let a two goal lead slip against Sydney FC.

The seventh edition of the Sydney Derby was played in front of 41,213 supporters who witnessed the Western Sydney Wanderers finish the match with 9 men and 0 points after losing control of the match and being unable to overcome some dubious officiating.

Western Sydney were a goal up inside 20 minutes, Romeo Castelen left Gersback for dead and delivered a pinpoint accurate cross into the penalty area. Mark Bridge had peeled off his marker and stood on the penalty spot waiting for the cross. Bridge struck at goal with his right foot, the ball fired into the turf and gave Vedran Janjetovic no chance.

The travelling supporters were in dreamland just 5 minutes later. The Wanderers won a corner, took it quickly and the Sydney FC defence hadn't set in time, it flicked off the head of Bridge towards the back post where Ognenovski wildly swung his boot out, only to send the ball high into the night air. With a gaggle of players from both sides waiting for the ball to drop the Janjetovic the Sydney keeper made a right mess of his attempted punch, misjudging the flight of the ball, getting a weak hand that sent the ball falling backwards for one of the worst own goals in the history of the A-League.

In the dying seconds of the first half Sydney FC had a life line through Gamiero. A long ball out of defence found it's way over the head of Daniel Mullen at right fullback. The miss let Alex Brosque poke a backheel into the path of Gamiero, who placed his shot towards the far post, a slight deflection perhaps helping it find the back of the net where it otherwise would have just missed.

They had the equaliser 5 minutes into the second half, Ognenovski connecting with a tame shot after a scramble in the box. The ball deflected away as it passed through the sea of legs in the penalty area and it threw the ball in the opposite direction to Covic's dive. Protests from the Wanderers about Ibini being miles offside went unheeded, even with Ibini blocking Covic's view and holding onto the keeper there was no offside call.

The Wanderers objective from the match from winning to hoping for a draw after the loss of Saba. The Brazilian attacking midfielder received a straight red after his flying tackle on Terry Antonis was judged to have been dangerous. This despite Saba winning the ball and making the slightest of contact with Antonis. It left Western Sydney reeling, and from there Sydney FC were in control of the game. The seemingly inevitable winner for Sydney came in the 79th minute, Brosque had the ball fall to his left foot from Gamiero and it found the right hand corner of the net.

Western Sydney were reduced to 9 men following an injury late on, and with the two man disadvantage were lucky simply to get through the rest of the game without conceding another goal. The post-match press conference saw Wanderers manager Tony Popovic dismayed by the officiating for the second week after the Wanderers were denied a clear penalty against Melbourne Victory, the bad offside call on the equalising goal and Saba's dubious red card in this match didn't help their cause.

Despite the poor officiating, the Wanderers were on the back foot from the moment Gamiero scored Sydney FC's first, and the second half was yet another Derby implosion at the Sydney Football Stadium. The Wanderers have now lost the first two matches of the current A-League season and if you include the Grand Final from last season, have lost three in a row. Changes and massive improvement are required in the upcoming Asian Champions League final otherwise the 5-0 aggregate loss by Adelaide United could be in danger of being broken.

The Wanderers next match is against Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia in the Asian Champions League Final first leg at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday the 25th of October.

Not a fan of Popa, two weeks in a row - effectively blaming the referee for our loss in the post match interview.

Come on Popa - as much as I agree those decisions certainly had an affect on the match, surely we're better than blaming the ref.

This has to be ******* joke.

    You're joking right?

    That referee was the match.

    Bitterzzzzzzzzz.

The referee was far from the best - but can you really purely and solely blame us conceding SEVEN goals in TWO weeks, on the referees???

Mullen is a disaster. I don't know what he was like at Adelaide but he's been pathetic since he came to us... looks like a rabbit in the headlights. Was he the one Popa was alluding to after the game re tiredness? He was at fault in all three goals. The first got over the top of him and then he couldn't get back inside quick enough to cover for his original poor positioning. The second he fluffed around in the box and spilled it. The third he was looking over his shoulder at what was going on behind him instead of going to what was obviously his player. Apart from that his distribution is sh*te. He's easily Popa's worst signing... replacing someone who was probably his best. I see Polenz has only played one game for that Norwegian mob he signed for...#BringBackPOLENZ!!!!!

I have to agree was poor at times and he was targeted in second half and found out at times, still is young and needs alot of work but his confidence would be shot after today.

Bloody hope that we are singing loud next week because I'm embarrassed to say that we were totally outsung by the Cove tonight. Why would the RBB introduce new chants in such a big game? And why kick off the game with 15 minutes of wordless chants that die off after the first few rounds? We let the boys down in the stands particularly in the second half.

What the **** are you talking about?!?

I don't know where you were sitting, but we outsung them for most of the match. Our charts of 'You can't hear Sydney FC sing' were very loud in the middle of the match.

As always the Smurfs only sing when they are winning, so they were very loud at the end. But they didn't NOT dominate the match!!!

Having said all that, you are correct that the RBB should not be starting out with new chants at the Derby.

However sitting in Bronze tonight, it was great to see the bronze ticket holders joining in on the more popular chants.

Don't want to waste space re quoting WSyd12 but seriously buddy you reckon the Cove outsang us and we need to get louder. Maybe you should come to a game once in a while. popa will take care of the team and the RBB of itself. I thought we were magnificent tonight. The RBB had three capos and the team was missing it's three best players. More will be revealed. Those that think Saba deserved a red should watch a match instead of listening to it on the radio.

    How is santa's injury?

Didn't look good at all, if it was just a minor tear he would have been able to walk on his own but fox showed footage where had to be assisted walking in the dressing room. They can be nasty long term ones!

Que Scumney FC fans cheering that Santa got injured. Can't wait till the next game at Parra, got to show them who is THE BEST IN SYDNEY!

it would have been sweeter if we won in front of their fans. but hey winning at home is the second best thing atm

I am in a ***** filthy mood tonight, even the dog has done his usual thing on nights like this and abandoned me, in my sons room I think.

30 years I have been watching football and I have just about seen every scenario going supporting the Boro over the years. At 2-0 I said to the bloke next to me 'we cannot concede before half time here'. How many times do you see teams that are up a goal or two let one in right on the half time break and lose all the momentum. We were coasting and in total control in that first half AND WHAT DO WE ***** DO, let then score with just about the last kick of the first half with some poor marking up. We go in at 2-0 at half time and it is a different game.

ESFC come out for the second half fired up after their goal and they go close with a scramble and you could see their second coming.... and it came from a very similar situation.

We know Saba has a few red cards in him, I suspect that might not be his last this season, even if this one wasn't justified he does have it in his game.

Also Popa, 7 goals against after 2 A League games just isn't good enough, not for any side in the comp.

And to the guy coming out the gate at the same time as me after the game that said 'never again', well I hope I never do see you again you ***** *******.

I was at the game champ and sitting closer to the RBB than The Cove so your point is irrelevant.

Looking back probably a bit harsh in that post, that was fuelled by genuine anger and annoyance with the game. But I was real disappointed when I heard the new chant introduced and the constant wordless chants. I know SFC only sing when they win, sell outs they are, but I was real disappointed we didn't lift in the stands for them.

I stand by what I said in a previous thread, COYW is such an amazing chant and it absolutely went off at the end of the first half. That sheer noise and passion is what its all about.

On another note, Sydney's tifo? 'West is just geography, sydney is a state of mind'? What the hell does that even mean? Idiots.

As for Popa's reaction to Saba, while it was a harsh call I think Popa would be pissed odd at Saba in general. Not necessarily because of that particular incident, but Saba's constant tendency to get involved in fiery situations and attract the ire of the referee. Don't get me wrong, he's so classy and I love him, and he got a very rough call today, but if he doesn't settle down a bit then it'll ruffle many feathers.

Og is scum even had a go at his own keeper and that dog punch to Saba how did he not get sent off.

Was a poorish tackle by Saba but straight red card no way yellow at best.

Ref was **** and inconsistent in calls and the lines men/women need there eyes checked.

Whats was with the kids from the cove coming on the field.

We was **** second half and found out in defense but best thing to come of this game is that Romeo showed us he will be a gun best buy for sure and once we get our team together on thr pitch fit and firing well be back :-)

    **** off easy sydney

Were going to have to go for a new thing next Saturday night, we need a totally active Parra stadium! All those people in the west and east stands tonight who got up off their seats and joined in with the RBB, that needs to happen next Saturday at Parra in all stands.

Everyone has a massive task to lift for what is the biggest game in our history!!!
