  • Cornthwaite Creams Newcastle

    mack

Robbie Cornthwaite's brace, a goal from Jaushua Sotirio and a solid defensive performance saw the Western Sydney Wanderers defeat the disjointed Newcastle Jets

While the Jets looked good in the first half hour, a stoic defensive effort from the visiting Wanderers kept the game at 0-0 while they eased into the match. 5 minutes from the break they turned a broken set piece into a goal. Newcastle failed to clear their lines, Kearyn Baccus found Jumpei Kusukami, who beat his marker then lobbed a cross to the far post. Cornthwaite, one of the tallest players in the league, leapt high above opposing central defender Nigel Boogaard, knocking it clear past Jack Duncan in the Newcastle goal.

In the blink of an eye it was 2 goals for the visiting team. From a free kick a long way out, Jack Clisby knocked it wide to Jumpei, who flicked it sideways to Sotirio, his marker Mateo Poljak left Sotirio unchallenged, the young winger smashed the ball through the legs of Duncan to leave the Wanderers in control going into half-time.

Newcastle were reportedly given the hairdryer treatment at half-time, but Mark Jones' charges appeared to have ignored the treatment, as Cornthwaite rose again to pickup his double. Nico Martinez floated a corner to the back post, Cornthwaite towered over Boogaard once more, and once more Duncan was beaten by the veteran defenders header.

Both teams made changes as the game drew to a close, Hamill was one of them and he nearly scored with a long range piledriver from a cleared corner while Newcastle looked unlikely to pull a goal back even as they piled men forward.

It appeared unlikely but if the Wanderers can keep this run going they are a big chance of hosting a home final, they will need to defeat Melbourne Victory at ANZ Stadium next weekend.

I was sitting up the back of Bay 9 with a few other forum members and saw a whole bunch of crap go down with the police.

Most of the game I only saw a couple of police and actually thought how great it was apart from the lady at the Bay 9/10 entrance being a ticket nazi.

Then midway during the 2nd half I had a front row seat for the cavalry arriving. The Riot Squad marched in behind the RBB and then had a tactical meeting before splitting and heading down each side of the RBB. After they kicked two girls out, they seemed to retreat to the back of the bay and disperse.

I will say that we had one good experience with a cop standing near us. The guy dressed up in the inflatable dinosaur costume walked out of the bay deflated and about 5mins later walked back in all blown up again. The cop near us laughs his head off and makes a few jokes about it including a slightly inappropriate one :P Seemed to be one of the decent ones not taking things so seriously.

Then after the game was finished, there was a scuffle in the tunnel between what looked like a couple of WST boys. Police pinned down one guy on the ground with two cops on top of him for a ridiculous amount of time. I was about to say something before they finally let him up. Lots of broken noses and people wanting to carry on too.

What I found most disgusting was though, the police after that incident blocked off the tunnel and made everyone go out the left. My car was parked right next to the entry at the other end so I wanted to go that way. Other Wanderers fans in the bays further along were allowed to exit out that way but apparently we weren't. I asked several police why I wasn't allowed to go the other way and got ordered to move along or else. So instead of a short walk down the tunnel to my car, I was made to walk around the entire outside of the stadium, through the car park where cars were leaving to get where I needed to go.

    So stupid.

This is why I don't wear team colours to away games. The moment local cops see you as an opposition support (regardless of being in the RBB or not) they turn into pricks.

What I found most ridiculous was that they were directing slightly intoxicated people into a highly active and not very well lit car park. I was sober and even I thought it was dangerous.

I just didn't get their point. I still had to walk around the front of the stadium with all the Jets fans leaving anyway. If their aim was to segregate fans, they did a **** job.

Stupid thing was, if I had left through the other entrance of Bay 9 where I sat, I could have walked out down the tunnel with no problems. Again, it seems like a half arsed attempt to segregate fans. I pointed this out to one female cop, who said "I don't care, you can't go this way. You'll just have to walk all the around".

I have a huge respect for police. Some of my immediate family members are officers. But sometimes the things they do just inflame situations. We've had no problems up at Newcastle in the past and there were no issues last night in the RBB but they have to look like they're doing something so they create issues.

I know Wanderboy very well and reading his story made me so angry. He is a great guy and would never cause trouble. He was there with his young son FFS.

My boyfriend and I went out during the scuffle in the tunnel to keep an eye on things as it was getting heated. I wanted to make sure I saw everything the police did in case it escalated. I had my phone out ready to film if it did.

I was so angry at how they manhandled the guy on the ground. They had his face pinned down on the concrete by two officers. One with a knee to his neck and the other with his knees in his back. He was pleading with the cops to let him up. He looked in a lot of pain. I was almost ready to walk over and say something when they finally did let him up. There's no need for that heavy-handiness.

So why is it not a problem for NRL fans to wear away colours?

Why are we such a threat to society?

    It's ridiculous.

Jess, I had no idea that took place in the tunnel after the game.

Myself and young Wanderboy just got out of there as quickly as possible after the game.

I must say, as we were walking out of the tunnel there was a line of Riot Squad members lined up against the back wall where the canteens/bars are and I was again eyeballed by one particular individual all the way past them. This wasn't the plain clothed Chief Wiggum, but one of his cohorts who obviously had me identified.  It was very uncomfortable. I watched him all the way and his eyes never left me. I just kept on walking with my son.

Why are we subjected to this intimidation?

Yesterday was a day of celebration and I saw no trouble whatsoever, yet I myself was subjected to intimidation for what reason?

    I'm sick of this ****.

It is about time our club started taking a stand and do something about this ****.

I've been following all kinds of sport as a spectator all my life and have never been subject to this sort of police overkill.

I now understand why people like Manfred are also really pissed off and are boycotting games.

BTW, thanks for the kind words.

They are so true and that is why I'm so cranky at what I was subjected to yesterday.

    :(

Sorry I didn't see you up there Jess, did you go pub?

Best part of the away trips is seeing people.

We must have just missed the stuff in the tunnel as we went out.

Because most low rank cops that get assigned/volunteer for sports matches have the same mentality about football as the bogans that watch NRL & AFL and comment on channel 7/9 facebook pages saying football should be banned.

Doesn't matter if it's Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle or Gosford, they are all the same.

Nearly died from heatstroke after the first half sun but it was worth it to see Cornflakes score twice, Sotirio continue his inevitable rise towards the Ballon D'Or, Jumpei's backheel, and to laugh at Hoole.

Nice meeting Stringer and the ever positive FCB again, and Lloydy for the first time (i think).

haha yep it was me. i thought afterwards that i didn't introduce myself I just rocked up to the table and started talking ****. was good to meet you :)

Was good to see Haliti get a run. Love that guy, we should get him back as a squaddie.

I think I mentioned it at the time.

But there was a great bit were he blasted his shot over and the camera pans in to see him do that thing where he looks up to the skies in total disbelief before putting his hands over his head. Made me nostalgic, must have seen that 100 times. Always love him for that rainy night in Gosford though

Yeah, seeing him doing that brought back pangs of nostalgia.
