  • Cornthwaite Creams Newcastle

    mack

Robbie Cornthwaite's brace, a goal from Jaushua Sotirio and a solid defensive performance saw the Western Sydney Wanderers defeat the disjointed Newcastle Jets

While the Jets looked good in the first half hour, a stoic defensive effort from the visiting Wanderers kept the game at 0-0 while they eased into the match. 5 minutes from the break they turned a broken set piece into a goal. Newcastle failed to clear their lines, Kearyn Baccus found Jumpei Kusukami, who beat his marker then lobbed a cross to the far post. Cornthwaite, one of the tallest players in the league, leapt high above opposing central defender Nigel Boogaard, knocking it clear past Jack Duncan in the Newcastle goal.

In the blink of an eye it was 2 goals for the visiting team. From a free kick a long way out, Jack Clisby knocked it wide to Jumpei, who flicked it sideways to Sotirio, his marker Mateo Poljak left Sotirio unchallenged, the young winger smashed the ball through the legs of Duncan to leave the Wanderers in control going into half-time.

Newcastle were reportedly given the hairdryer treatment at half-time, but Mark Jones' charges appeared to have ignored the treatment, as Cornthwaite rose again to pickup his double. Nico Martinez floated a corner to the back post, Cornthwaite towered over Boogaard once more, and once more Duncan was beaten by the veteran defenders header.

Both teams made changes as the game drew to a close, Hamill was one of them and he nearly scored with a long range piledriver from a cleared corner while Newcastle looked unlikely to pull a goal back even as they piled men forward.

It appeared unlikely but if the Wanderers can keep this run going they are a big chance of hosting a home final, they will need to defeat Melbourne Victory at ANZ Stadium next weekend.

Really sorry to do this, however it must be done....it's April the first ok, we lost 3-0 to Jets... 2 own goals from Cornflakes and a spectacular OG form Sotirio. Don't believe otherwise.

It was painful in parts that game, we gave the ball away way too much which as others have said we will get punished for in finals, but we did pick ourselves up for the shakey start and put them away. Happy with that.

    Now bring on victory

    Just back from Newy:-

    • Great job to all the travelling fans
    • Sotirio had his best game for us. He is now a decent squaddie.
    • Be great to keep the defence together next season. Keep Cornflakes, another year for Aspro and Risdon coming in.
    • Scott was so unlucky with the one that shaved the post
    • TBH they had the better of the first half, then suddenly, it's half time and we're 2-0 up. That's football.
    • Gotta keep Baccus too and then get two great marquee schemers and an Aussie striker and we'll be set next season.
    • I bet HAPPY is ECSTATIC

I've been waiting for Cornthwaite to get a header into the goal. Looks like the team has been working on crossing.

Let's hope they start working on penalty shootouts as well.

This season keeps getting weirder. We've played this squad into some form and since it ain't first past the post...who knows. Hunter Stadium reminded me how **** Spotless is to watch football. It must be hard for WST to sit next to the RBB and remain sporadically Active. Anyways next week we play someone that counts so we'll see how good this purple patch is.

Great day out so much better to watch football at a proper football ground isn't it.

    Yes, sort of......

    I'll explain later.

Not our best performance tonight but amazingly we snagged a 3-0 win. That's football. We defended like scavengers though. Amazingliy commendable defence in the first half.

We lacked a bit of creativity when Nico went off. Geez he gives some great balls to our wingers and creates so much space for them. Pity they can't capitalise as often as they should.

All in all though, a quite competent performance and a great evening. Fantastic turnout of Wanderers fans as well.

Soured only by my experience with the local constabulary.

During the chant where we divide into two groups and chant against each other, the riot squad thought it necessary to make their presence felt.

This really pissed me off as I had seen nothing unusual during this that doesn't happen at any other game.

I turned around and saw a plain clothes cop eyeing me off after I encouraged a guy behind me who was filming the chant to film what was happening re the riot squad. I was immediately summonsed away by the Newcastle version of Chief Wiggum into the food court area and given the third degree demanding I stop inciting further trouble. After I asked the Wanderers fan to film the impending riot police intervention (which he happily did so) I turned to young Wanderboy and spoke to him about something that just happened on the field - yet Chief Wiggum also accused me of influencing minors in their hatred for the constabulary. WTF?

He also told me that they had been informed by one of our fan liason security that there was a fight happening (when we really all know that it's just the guys moshing). As if our FLS would tell them that???!!!!

I politely suggested that during this chant moshing just happened between the two groups and it wasn't a fight but he wouldn't have a bar of it.

I was threatened with expulsion from the venue and told to sit back in my seat and to stop inciting more trouble. He even said that I was causing more trouble than those at the front. lol.

I'm sorry, but if anything is going to escalate trouble, it is sending in 15 riot squad to the RBB.

As far as I could see, no one was evicted or removed. So, in the end, what was the problem?

I only wish I could have mentioned to Wiggum that there has been 3 vicious brawls at NRL games this season, and I bet at each of them, there is no way the riot squad would have even been at the ground, let alone looking at taking action.

5 year bans for RL fans? lol.

The whole episode left a sour taste in my mouth, and contrary to what Wiggum may think of me, it's hard to keep encouraging my son that  police should be respected, although I have spent my entire life doing that.

I'm going to put all that aside, keep encouraging young Wanderboy to respect police, and just remember tonight for the great victory it was.

Newcastle just keeps on giving. Year after year.

I was sat in the next bay across and did not see any trouble at all.... everyone seemed in good spirits and were creating an atmosphere..(the jets fans werent going to) .... it looked like the jumpsuit mechanics came down the stairs in the hope they could drag people out.... it must get boring watching people behave themselves.....

Think i know the cheif Wanderboy is talking about. A few trips back i was stood with the lad to the right of the RBB and had that feeling i was being watched by a police bloke with a cap and not much to do. Turned around a few mins later and it was him and another couple in boiler suits stood staring directly in our direction, lots of discussing and pointing..wasnt us in the end that was taken out for a talking to but they did with a fella a few rows in front who wasnt doing anything wrong as far as i could see.

I bet they were stood watching above the corner bit to the right of the RBB? They seem to 'select' someone to have a go at most games from that area, you were that guy this time hey Wanderboy...

Cornthwaite can remain Captain with Martinez taking the corners.

Mitch (& Santa) does a fair job with the band too...

Anyone but Dimas, never captain material, the whole side follows him sideways and backwards when he is captain lol

    Link to comment

agreed Dimas can enjoy the bench for the run into finals. He can play ACL were we are next to no chance to get through.

Good win yesterday sign of a championship team, don't play that well and win. So good to get a few set piece goals.FFA now frothing at mouth over a derby finals game to pay up the end of year financial years bonus plans.

So up for next weekend also, that is another real test of our finals credentials, the team deserves a decent attendance, they have done everything we have asked of them over the last month or so and stepped it up, Santa alone deserves all the fans to come back..

I am getting that pre GF excited vibe back, 3rd or 4th would be great but also a trip to Melbourne or Brissy would be ok and would have to be there, treat every game as a GF when you finish 5th or 6th...as a fan and on the pitch..

    Exciting times...

Hey all Happy here again and is Happy ECSTATIC you betcha !!!!

Fistly the crowd , it is an eerie feeling hearing the pounding of the drums and the noise echoing through the stadium as the RBB entered and echoed right through into the tunnel .

I don't think the RBB shut up the whole game. Well done all even the boys on the bench were tapping there feet :)

I gotta say Newcastle has a half descent team and wont need much to make them a good side , a good centre back and a decent forward and get rid of Hoole.

We certainly were stretched early but at the same time we had chances and the second half we controlled the game well.

5th place and we march on, Melbourne Victory next week and we need a crowd for this , don't let The smurfs out do us they got 15k plus last night at Alliance.

    Geez I am Happy :)

You do look like trouble though!

That's incredible, every away trip there is a shitload of bored cops there. Of course as usual there was no trouble at all. As for influencing minors to not respect police, we that was happening but it was you he is doing a perfectly good job of that without any help.

Also amusing that in the pub the guy in front of me wasn't wearing wanderers gear gets served in a glass and I (I am assuming we) get a plastic cup

Great to have a forum meet up to, I think we may have had the the first General meeting for the inner west hipster thread

We struggled with the Jets pressing for the first 35min then enter Cornflakes head

    Positives:

    - Cornflakes head

    - Jumpei's kung fu assist

    - Sotorio's goal

    - Neville's last minute defending

    - Nico's sexy delivery from corner

    - RBB and WST sounded great at the ground

    Negatives:

    - NRL marking were still visible on the field, the sooner NRL relocates the Knights to Ipswich, the better it will be for the Newcastle Jets

    Disgusting treatment mate. Appalling.

This is the sort of thing I try to explain to people when they tell me we 'deserve' the treatment we get from the police and are causing all the trouble.

I tell lloydy jr that we trust the police and go to them for help in general life but they don't like football fans (especially us) so we need to be much more careful at and around games.

Haven't had to go over that topic in a while though - since the pepper spray game he doesn't need reminding.

WST? They only joined in a few of the chants....all looked rather awkward from where I was sitting
