  • Dari-goal Vidosic Punishes Perth

    mack

Dario Vidosic has scored in his starting debut to give the Wanderers a dominant 1-0 victory against Perth Glory.

Threatened with postponement via a typical Wanderers home game storm, Western Sydney came out firing against Perth and totally dominated the play. As the referees discussed taking the players off should the lightning strike at Parramatta Stadium, Dario Vidosic ensured that any abandonment of the game at half-time would see the Wanderers take all three points.

Scott Jamieson launched a 44th minute corner in the penalty area, Perth failed to clear, Marc Warren's snap attempt at a clearance fell to Federico Piovaccari. The marquee striker smartly squared the ball to Vidosic, his first and second touches took him past Richard Garcia, and his third fired the ball across ex-Wanderer Ante Covic.

The second half continued much in the same vein, with the Wanderers eventually producing a decisive 60-40% possession tally, long with 359 passes at 83% accuracy, the new Spanish 'tiki taka' influence finally resulting in a match where all three points stayed with the Red & Black.

Our Lives We Give / la la la la la la la la lo lo lo lo lo lo...after such a short time our new chant smashed it tonight....cannot stop singing and will be up there with Call to Arms. Pio was as hungry as Jamieson. The club marshall in front of 56 seriously needs a dozen grandkids he can play control god with. My patience with Uncle Fester is running out. What is it with games v Perth and hail ? Least the pepper spray was missing. Popa out eh ?? Newcastle will be a beast of game and trip.

What's been the issue with the Club Marshall??
He just walks around analyzing everything waiting for any opportunity to tell people what to do. Then pounces. He is just doing the job of security. It's just like having a cop at the front or security, except security wouldn't analyze to the extent he does
I had a really good chat to him at the w-league game & picked his brain for quite a while. There are also a few things that are very interesting about his role that you'll only find out if you actually have a chat with him, which he is quite happy to oblige.

In response to your comment, he is the first line of response to any problems. If security or police feel that he isn't able to control certain behaviours or make an impact on the crowd then they will get involved, which we don't want. It's not so much about telling people what to do, it's more analysing potential problems & nipping them in the bud. Also, he isn't doing the job of security, he is paid for by the club to help the fans when interacting with the security or the police. It's not his job to identify & remove trouble makers, he is trying to stop problems from escalating to security or police involvement. His job is very similar to that of the fan liaison officers in Clifford's Stots crowd management models but has slight adaptations. I completely understand what he is doing & why he is doing it.

At long last I think we are getting the sort of crowd management we are happy with. The police can piss off home now or at least stay invisible.

I'm not sure if it is the best idea (supporter Marshall), it's good in theory but I'd be interested to know what model or country it was based. The problem I have with him, is that he has very little influence over the police. In Clifford's Stot's model, the fan liaison officers are police officers who are specifically tasked for this special purpose whereas ours is an employee of a club. If **** hits the fan like it did against Perth last year, he has no influence over the police action (he has input but no final decision) & if you have any OSG or riot squad who are a bit trigger happy wanting to get stuck in, he can't do anything! He just has to sit back & let it happen. I think it's a step in the right direction, but I'm not sure his effectiveness in a worse case scenario.

Lets hope it doesn't get to that worst cast scenario. Usually the worst case scenario has been because the police have no idea what they are doing. As long as the police aren't the first response and its more on this guy, then that's a win as far as I am concerned.

Good to see the guys in 53 getting more involved.

The WST was quite lively at times in Bay 53.

My view from the lower west was blocked so I didn't see these guys in action. So last home game they were involved for just one chant, what was it today? 75% involved? Was it just certain chants?

    They improved this week.

They got involved straight after the poznan and did not stop.

In my opinion, yes they can separate from the rbb if they wish, but don't see no harm if they always joined in the chants..

Needs to be said that the RBB put in a monster effort last night what with the rain making most folk not under cover in other stands search for it. It's bloody easy to go hardcore active when your nice & dry on a calm, temperate spring evening. It takes a real conscious effort to chant and poznan and generally deliver the active goods when it's pissing down and it feels like ages since we won anything.

On the match, still buzzing :xbop:

I can't be bothered on breaking down the match too much, we got the result but I'd thought I'd like to pick up the odds & ends of the match:

    - All in all everyone had a really good match, but you wonder what the outcome would have been if we didn't get the goal

    - First half superb, it was great playing attacking possession based football, something that we can get really excited about

    - We so so needed that goal in the first half, surprisingly it made us look more nervous than settled in the second half

    - Second half we were just not right, probably the worst half of football we have had all season. We were so all over the place trying so hard at times whereas we just needed to calm the game down & control the tempo. As much of us pre game have said, we'll take a scrappy 1-0 win any day of the week

    - Sotirio had an excellent game, final ball is lacking but excellent in the last two weeks. I feel sorry for the kid because when castelen comes back, bridge fully fit & possibly gol gol entering the fray I'm not sure how much game time we will get. Amazing what happens when you get regular football rather than just playing the odd game here & there!

    - Said my piece on Pio earlier

    - How fantastic is our combination of Andreu, Dimas, NTS & Alberto? It is just fantastic the way these guys are able to keep the ball while the 9/10 from the opposition are trying to pressure us. It is an absolute joy to watch, the no look passes, the ability to have pressure by up to three players then just move in a way that creates space for him, the confidence of playing on the ball, the ease of which we keep possession then transition into attack. Absolutely fantastic to watch. I never quite understood how Fozz could blow his time nearly every time he watches Barca but it so enjoyable to watch compared the NTS longball when he has no options of the last few seasons.

So they chanted for 10 minutes as opposed to 5 minutes? Surely they must have chanted more than that?

I don't know I saw the match totally differently to you. For a start I thought our second half was great. There was lots of good interplay and we were moving through their half with ease. To say it was the worse half of the season, I am sorry  but I am lost for words :D

Its ok there is nothing wrong with that, we all see different things in a football match. Maybe I am also biased towards Sotirio, because he frustrates the hell out of me when I see him play. Hopefully he gets better because he is a young player, but he was still one of our weaker players on the field today. Having said that he still played ok, but that is a measure of how well the whole team played today. Still tends to hold the ball too long when he should pass, still needs to be able to consistently cross the ball. Not his worst game of the season, but was it excellent, well that's a stretch too far in my opinion.

I think Neville still needs to get his positioning right especially when trying to provide an outlet for our keeper and our defenders. He is constantly being instructed by Alberto on where he should be. Luckily for us Perth's attack was pretty muted and didn't really trouble us at all. I want to say I was glad to see Aspro get some game time, unfortunately it was at the expense of Alberto who copped a knock. I think the kid is a genuine ball players and if I was Topor, I would be a little bit worried about holding down his spot. Yes, he is our captain, but since when has that mattered.

Lastly how good are our Spanish boys, I think I have a man crush on Andreu. Seriously good footballer and such an intelligent player, knows how to thread a pass. Such a joy to watch. Alberto was also having a great game before get subbed while Dimas was pretty solid overall albeit with a few wayward passes here and there. It was a fantastic effort and was long overdue. I seriously cant remember when was the last time we actually got a win in the A-league at Pirtek. If someone can jog my memory I would appreciate it. Genuinely curious.

    My god what a night.

After the womens league match I decided to get a pass out of the stadium to get me some Messina ice cream.

By chance I see my buddy Prydzopolis outside the stadium and within 5 seconds of saying hello Prydz gets a call informing him that he's won the NRMA dugout experience. Prydz tells the caller that he needs four tickets so he can take my partner and I with him.

We get rushed back stage where they had prawn skewers. I ate an oceans worth.

Got interviewed on camera and made a complete ass out of myself. Received 3,000 messages and a call from Balkanite. Everybody universally agreed that I'm a total tool and should consider living the hermit life to avoid further embarrassment.

During the game I got told to shut up several times for yelling obscenities so close to the Fox Sports and broadcasting radio mics. Got a strike on my name and a verbal 'last warning' from security because I told the referees to keep an eye on Mark Warren as they were travelling up the tunnel at half time (coincidently he got subbed off at the half ;) )

Managed to keep a lid on it in the second half, despite how nerve racking the game turned out to be!

Everything else has been said Vidosic is class, love me some Andreu, shame about Alberto and the RBB sing better in the rain.

Hahahaha - was that you guys. I thought you guys were brilliant. I was laughing my ass off during the interview especially when you said

I think if you compare it to the way we played in all our matches it has to be the worse we've played. ESFC = great, Adelaide = great, Brisbane = we had mistakes but played well. That second half we weren't as fluid as we have been, it was a scrappy half & despite Perth not deserving of a point we didn't close out the game or control the game. I agree on the interplay & the attack (especially throwing people forward, it looked good) but we were pushing so hard when at times we didn't need to. I also think I was nervous as **** during the second half, after all the bad luck we've had during the past year (the last 364 days, had a bit of luck 365 days ago ;)) expecting something to go wrong or us to concede a goal. Just wanted the game to end!!

Can't believe people are happy with Neville an unhappy with Pio.

Neville is a liability. He is just about the only weakness in defence (apart from the odd issue at set pieces - I noticed we still left a guy alone out wide when clearing our lines after a set piece last night). And his crossing is atrocious. He made a couple of decent one-twos last night but that was it.

Pio might not have scored, but you can see his touch and ability to play in others. Nichols connects with that volley and Pio looks like a genius with that pass. There were a couple of times where Pio was in space or looking to make a run and the wrong ball was played. Bridge is the type of player who, when fully match fit and sharp, will find Pio. As he and Dario get back to top fitness Pio will start looking better.

Not sure I understand the Pio hate.

Every poorly weighted free kick, he was there in the box waiting for a ball that didn't arrive.

Every shanked cross, he was waiting in the box for a ball that sailed well past him.

I don't want an out-and-out number 9 to have to come deep for the ball. That's not their job.

He put in a good shift, laid off quite a few balls to a rampaging Butters and Jamo. It's hard to fault a guy for not scoring when he's not being given the ball in a goal scoring opportunity.

Well said. Service to Pio was terrible.

Yep exactly, I've said it last week that he needs support with a player to play alongside or behind him to feed the balls that he needs to become effective

    Good all round.

    - Dimas and Andreu very good - we bossed midfield

    - **** Nichols covers some ground in 90 min

    - Sotirio's movement and pressing is good but always takes wrong option at the end. Had to laugh when he got subbed - popa was so mad at him for straying offside just before.

    - great to have bridge back close to his best.

    - Neville played well but Fmd he needs to work on his crossing - only danger is to the seats.

    - pretty dominant performance they had very few chances and we probably should have scored 3 or 4.

well in Lloydy said most of it for me. Our mid and their ability to control the ball appears to be upgrade on time past. Neville and Jamo did mishit a few crosses - but great to see us attacking down both sides. Gives us some great variety.

The weekly Pio chat post game? um well i am sure it will go well into Wednesday! For me seem to get a few knocks tonight and took a while to recover. Some times he can be quite brilliant - (when he just went beast mode of left side of box first half he was so strong and there was the flick to bridge that almost came off) What lets him down at the moment is his execution on finishing - I know stating the obvious right! The bicycle kick was on but he made terrible contact. I'd say Popa gives him 2 more starts and then he'll be benched if he doesn't score. Santa and Bridge will push him hard for the spot.

Nice to win - next week should be great. Great time for Jets to have us visit after their big win. Hopefully they can get 15K next week. Assume at least 3K wanderers will travel.

Pio putting a bit of effort in to getting onside would be a good start, took him 15 minutes to start playing after the break and within that was the most lazy arsed attempt at staying onside you will see......

Compared to the CCM v ESFC game we had more than 20 x the number of police.

There was no need for it at our match. Massive group of about 20+ in the park before the game just standing there watching everyone.

Not sure if there were any issues in the RBB last night, but all looked good from the eastern stand... only issue is our roof is s**t.

Piovicarri is a worry IMO. In the other hand, Popa has done a terrific job in the midfield, both Spainards are an upgrade on LaRocca/Poljak, while Nichols has been really good, I think he has surprised a lot of people with his work rate. As for Dario. Outstanding.

Piovaccari just looks majorly unfit. In patches he did some quite good things tonight, and we know he has the strength to hold up well. He just seems undercooked and the game is being played around him. Have to question how he can be so unfit, but the fact that it is clearly such a major factor means I still have a little bit of hope. His movement in the box was poor though, and he didn't offer a threat despite 28 crosses... not to mention zero shots on target and 59% pass accuracy.

he may do a lot of work but lets be honest hes getting paid to score goals and thats not happening. Does popa have a selection headache next match?

    • Was worried when I saw the Riot Squad van in the fan area pre-game. Thankfully I never saw them again.

    • Agree with everything written about how the team is gelling, Andreu could become our Broich or Khallfallah. Really controls the middle. Nothing too intricate but picks his pass and keeps us moving.

Fed did OK but he lacks the pace to get away so is really going to need service to score. I wonder if we shouldn’t have done more to sign McClaren as our main striker? He would have been much cheaper and then we would have money for a different marquee?

Redmayne actually came for a cross and punched it. His confidence is improving after the opener.

Looking forward to Jets away. Should be a great atmosphere, both sides coming off a win so the Newy fans should be out in force.

Seriously what is this storm cell that builds up every single weekend afternoon kick off! Kudos RBB

I would switch Santa for Pio and start Pio from the bench maybe, at least in a few weeks time when Santa has full match fitness back and if Pio hasn't improved. A fully fit Santa gives you an epic work rate.

Here's a stupid gif because that was the best Wanderers game in a while :D

Had to watch the game on TV and we commented on how muted the RBB sound on TV. Could barely be heard which is the complete opposite when you are actually at the game. Does Foxtel turn off the mikes in front of the RBB because of swearing - just a thought!
