  • Dari-goal Vidosic Punishes Perth

    mack

Dario Vidosic has scored in his starting debut to give the Wanderers a dominant 1-0 victory against Perth Glory.

Threatened with postponement via a typical Wanderers home game storm, Western Sydney came out firing against Perth and totally dominated the play. As the referees discussed taking the players off should the lightning strike at Parramatta Stadium, Dario Vidosic ensured that any abandonment of the game at half-time would see the Wanderers take all three points.

Scott Jamieson launched a 44th minute corner in the penalty area, Perth failed to clear, Marc Warren's snap attempt at a clearance fell to Federico Piovaccari. The marquee striker smartly squared the ball to Vidosic, his first and second touches took him past Richard Garcia, and his third fired the ball across ex-Wanderer Ante Covic.

The second half continued much in the same vein, with the Wanderers eventually producing a decisive 60-40% possession tally, long with 359 passes at 83% accuracy, the new Spanish 'tiki taka' influence finally resulting in a match where all three points stayed with the Red & Black.

    Jukes :good:

On the match, still buzzing :x

    - All in all everyone had a really good match, but you wonder what the outcome would have been if we didn't get the goal

    A 0-0 draw.
I was more going to refer to the reaction of people if we hadn't got the 3 points, #popaout, #pioout, #tikitakaout, #ledererout, #canteenladyout etc It seems like the wins has got them to pipe down for at least a week but nobody can shut up Jayzko!!

Without taking credit from the team, which they fully deserve, the cynic in me thinks Perth played with one eye on the FFA cup final.

But 3 points is 3 points and may the floodgates and heaven open up every match.

Yeh, playing two youth team players making there debut, injuries & playing Marc warren as a RM. You could see the players had other things on there mind.

Wasn't gonna comment but then I saw someone criticise Topor. I don't know how you can criticise Topor after yesterday, the guy was immense. He was an absolute wall, maybe best player on the field. And I know he's not the greatest passer of the ball, but I don't think it's the issue people make it out to be. Teams clearly target Topor defensively, they set up their press so that they leave him free and mark everyone else. He then has to put it long, not because he can't pick out a pass (he can if there's one there), but because he doesn't have an option and doesn't have the skill of Spiranovic to drive into midfield. Therefore to me the issue's not long balls, the issue is if we're not setting up to anticipate the possibility of a long ball. Which I think we are, at least as well as we can without Dino.

And on Piovaccari, I understand he needs time. He clearly hasn't gelled and I'm sure the quality's there. But he's not helping his cause. On numerous occasions, Nichols, Jamieson, Vidosic, Sotirio etc have gotten behind one of the fullbacks on a break and have looked to put the early cross in. But all Pio's done is run alongside the centre back and expect an impossible cross. Compare that to Tomi, for example. Those situations were one of his strong points. He'd bust his lungs getting into an area where the wide player has a chance to pick him out (ACL final anyone?), or drift to the far post for the early ball there. That's just one example, but it's something we're obviously looking to exploit and have worked on a fair amount. Which makes me wonder what Pio's been doing when we've worked on that at training.

ACL final he was running alongside the CB. Possibly on the wrong side from memory.

He busted his ass once the cross came in.

Not quite alongside. Watch it again, he held back his run at the start to lose his man. Then when his markers lost him, he makes the run through the middle. Even as the ball's being crossed, he's already probably 2 metres away from his defender, who has no idea where he is. The point being though, he's deliberately moving to lose his man and give the crosser something to aim for.

Compare that to Pio, who seems more than happy to stay marked. I mean, maybe the awful delivery he's getting isn't helping things, I know I probably wouldn't be arsed if I knew the cross would end up in the RBB. But just frustrating to see

    You've over analysed that.

He wasn't holding back, he was jogging until he realised there was something on.

And the Hilal defenders were ball watching more losing Juric.

    Im just wondering with this.

In an event of an electric thunderstorm during the game, why should it be abandoned? What is the risk to fans and players when a thunderstorm hits during the match?

Lightning + large open area + people on said open area = danger

Football players have been struck by lightning while playing and I believe died as a result.

Interesting fact: more people have died at a football match as a direct result of lightning than have died due to flares.*

Also more people have been harmed by police than storms at Wanderers games, proving that Parramatta LAC are more of a threat to public safety than lightning.
