  • Defensive Error Hands Mariners Point

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers failed to win a game they dominated, as a second half error allowed the Central Coast Mariners to claim a point in a 1-1 draw.

With supporter favourite Kerem Bulut omitted completely from the match day squad, it was Brendon Santalab who took a position at the point of the spear. With not even 2 minutes play the decision to start Santalab was justified as the home side took the lead. A fast counter attack put Nico Martinez on the ball with the Mariners defence facing their own goal, he played a neat reverse pass to give Santalab a clear line of sight to goal and he blasted past Paul Izzo at the far post.

The closest the Mariners came to an equaliser in the first half was a goal-line scramble as Andrew Redmayne fumbled a cross to Connor Pain. Thankfully for the keeper he was able to combine with the rest of the defence to delay Pain long enough to get in position to smother his eventual shot.

Mitch Nichols & Jumpei Kusukami both wasted gilt edged chances to double their sides lead, Nichols in particular had a shocker in front of goal, blazing numerous opportunities either wide or high.

In the end was a self inflicted wound that let the Mariners equalise. Robbie Cornthwaite sold out his keeper with an awful backpass, Redmayne elected not to smother the ball and instead came out to try and kick the ball away only to collide with the onrushing Roy O'Donovan. With both keeper & striker sprawled on the turf, the ball sat still on the ground for Adam Berry to finish with a simple tap in. Pain nearly sent his side into raptures in the 75th minute, as he got through on goal but fired his strike wide right.

The night could have got worse for the Wanderers if not for a pair of blind officials, with Jack Clisby getting away with a clear handball inside his own penalty area in the 86th minute. Despite both the referee & linesman in perfect positions, neither of them spotted the infringement that might have cost the game.

Western Sydney play Perth Glory at NIB Stadium, Perth on Sunday the 6th of November.

Cornthwaite had a nightmare. He is a throwback to the dark age of CB play. It's not looking great is it. East Sydney dispatched both of these last 2 with ease.

Defense is a real worry, too slow too predictable. This is going to be a long season regardless of who is in goals.

Missing a leader and communicator, Dimas not yet at Captains level for mine.

I don't think the difference is as big as it seems. We dominated Newcastle more than they did. We should have been 3-0 up tonight too. Sydney aren't a great team, but they are confident and strong at the moment. They are taking their chances and solid at the back. They have also benefited from some lucky calls and shocking misses from the opposition, whereas we have gifted the opposition goals. The test for them will be how they handle a small downturn in form/luck.

Regardless of any upgrades in Jan, if we stopped screwing up at the back we'd be 9 points.

Yeah certainly don't see anyone taking the game by the scruff of the neck when it's needed. No-one pumping them up when we let a goal in.

Redmayne should have recognised the danger and smothered the ball. Maybe a idfk but better than screwing up with his crap tackle and costing us a goal.

Redmayne should have recognised the danger..... he knew who was playing infront him.

It wasn't the tackle that cost us the goal, it was the back pass.

We need to give away the suicide high line - teams are getting in behind over and over. It's only that the opposition have been ordinary that we haven't copped a bunch of goals.

It's a scary thought what Perth & mv could do to us.

We play at too high an intensity for large parts which tires us towards the end of games. Sydney is able to put it in cruise control during the middle section of games and still not give the other team a sniff. They have more in the tank left at the end and are just better organised in general. That's the difference.

50/50 chance. it was a short back pass. Redmayne couldn't do anything.

We brought them back in the game. Couldn't put in our chance. We got punished for it.

Say whatever you want but our CB and goalkeeper are ****en ****. We know it. Popa knows it. Fix it!

People can boo all they want.

That's been utter shite for 3 out 4 games this season. And all home games too.

We'll be in trouble around big bash time with our heavy away schedule combined with ACL starting around then too.

We really needed a strong start to compensate for those times.

Our back 4 play very narrow. We just gave Ferrera space

Too many players looked gassed and Lustica on for Nico took us backwards. A healthy Sotirio or Cole ahead of Lustica for mine.

The fact that they were so gassed again makes me ponder something is not right. Maybe overtrained, maybe wrong instructions to press hard when fitness is not actually there. All that said, Mitch puts one of those away and it's over.

So how does our recruitment work? Because if Popa has binned Pinatares already you have to wonder how much of him he'd seen before he got here.

I'm glad Santa and Nico started the game. The trouble was that we had no one on the bench tonight that was going to come on and change the game.

Nichols should have had three, if not four.

How Jumpei's header was saved by Paul ******* Izzo I'll never know.

Horrible back pass. Could Redmayne have done more? Maybe, but he can't cop the blame for that one.

How the **** did we not win that 6 nil?

    Santa; I love you.

Clisby is becoming my new favourite player. Not perfect, but our best Australian signing by a long shot.

    Glad Nico started.

Well pretty disappointed that we didn't get a win. Whoever said we need to do some shot training was an understatement.

And all that damn passing at the back. Why? I understand there are times to do that, to create some space or slow the tempo down and regain some formation, but it's seems to be born of lack of inspiration rather than any of those things. We aren't moving forward, creating chances. They seems a bit lost

I am not impressed with Neville at the mo. Way too casual on the ball. A few times tonight it seemed like he was having a training runaround.

Need to pick Cole before Lustica and why no Bulut, very disappointed with that draw and should have put them away but effed up.

Poor crowd figure but can't blame people to not show with what we're dishing out and lack a scoring marquee which Popa needs to sort out, bring in Carlton Cole who is a free agent or it will be a long season of missed chances.

King Mitch should've had a hat trick.

Wasn't Redmaynes fault, and all the people booing at full time need to pipe down.

They pay their money, they are perfectly entitled to boo if they are unhappy at what their money has bought them.

    My 2 bobs worth;

Redmayne has extremely poor judgment when to coming out especially in the first half. He looks lost. Same as last year, same this year. He is not a first team keeper. He costs us games your blind if you don't see it. Can't always blame the defence.

Nico and Baccus deserved more game time. Why did popa take em off so early. Surely their fit. Much rather they stayed on for another 15 then throwing in lustica and melling. We lost all momentum when subbed.

I suspect bulut has been put in place by popa. Will we have another Saba issue on our hands.

Our defence is seriously exposed in the last 15-20 and they struggle to keep up with the pace especially in this period.

On a positive note our first halves have been exceptional. I would be happy to see Baccus, nico, nicols, jumpei, Dimas and Santa/bulut start every week. When we hold the ball teams have no answer. Our press is good.

FFS why is almost every game at 7.50. I know so many families that just can't make this time slot it's ridiculous. This definately has an impact on crowds.

Onwards and upwards. We are working our way into the season and play some nice football.
