  • Defensive Error Hands Mariners Point

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers failed to win a game they dominated, as a second half error allowed the Central Coast Mariners to claim a point in a 1-1 draw.

With supporter favourite Kerem Bulut omitted completely from the match day squad, it was Brendon Santalab who took a position at the point of the spear. With not even 2 minutes play the decision to start Santalab was justified as the home side took the lead. A fast counter attack put Nico Martinez on the ball with the Mariners defence facing their own goal, he played a neat reverse pass to give Santalab a clear line of sight to goal and he blasted past Paul Izzo at the far post.

The closest the Mariners came to an equaliser in the first half was a goal-line scramble as Andrew Redmayne fumbled a cross to Connor Pain. Thankfully for the keeper he was able to combine with the rest of the defence to delay Pain long enough to get in position to smother his eventual shot.

Mitch Nichols & Jumpei Kusukami both wasted gilt edged chances to double their sides lead, Nichols in particular had a shocker in front of goal, blazing numerous opportunities either wide or high.

In the end was a self inflicted wound that let the Mariners equalise. Robbie Cornthwaite sold out his keeper with an awful backpass, Redmayne elected not to smother the ball and instead came out to try and kick the ball away only to collide with the onrushing Roy O'Donovan. With both keeper & striker sprawled on the turf, the ball sat still on the ground for Adam Berry to finish with a simple tap in. Pain nearly sent his side into raptures in the 75th minute, as he got through on goal but fired his strike wide right.

The night could have got worse for the Wanderers if not for a pair of blind officials, with Jack Clisby getting away with a clear handball inside his own penalty area in the 86th minute. Despite both the referee & linesman in perfect positions, neither of them spotted the infringement that might have cost the game.

Western Sydney play Perth Glory at NIB Stadium, Perth on Sunday the 6th of November.

Tactical awareness and discipline is missing.

    No doubt about it.

Watched from 416, directly above RBB. No organisation. 2 Wanderers players competing for the same loose ball, only for it to fall to a CCM player... Poor use of available space as the match went on.

Popa's current tactics remind me of Brendan Rogers when he was at Liverpool. Rogers had no ability to read the game, & consequently had no tactical awareness. He never changed formation to adapt to the game & made questionable, inappropriate substitutions at crucial stages of matches.

If we do not have the appropriate players for 4231 (which never changes, allowing opposing teams to see right through us & denying ourselves any advantage) then why not play 352 or 343? We may not have the required players for these formations, but we only need to score 1 more than the opposition for 3 points. FFS.

So people demanding earlier than 7 50, what is the perfect option? Is 7 30 okay or still too late for the kiddies? What if we move it to 6 40? Oh wait thats dinnertime, ruins the reservations. What about 5 30? Oh sun might be in our eyes. Are we ******* serious about complaining about a Saturday night scheduling? Have a listen to yourselves.

    Disappointing performance.

    Disappointing crowd.

Disappointing train situation. Parramatta station is a trek from Pirtek and further from Central, but it takes me longer to get home from SOP.

Disappointing what happened to Manfred. I'll let him elaborate.

RBB was fun though. My World did well considering half of the actives looked around like we were singing in Swahili

Cross floats in perfectly, keeper scrambling, defenders in all sorts. Fast approaching is Neville at the back stick, eyes on the prize, ready to pounce. What does he do? Takes every ounce of venom out of the chance and gently nods the ball into the Izzo's thankful arms hahaha I love that man, just peak Neville that was. What was he thinking...?

Yep remember seeing that and saying perfect safe back pass header to Redmayne.  " Oh wait that wasn't Redmayne but ***** Izzo the opposition keeper lol"  :woah:

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not complaining about 1 home game bring at 7:50pm.

I am complaining about ALL our home games being at 7:50pm!!!

That's not family friendly, and will result in smaller crowds, even if we were 1st on the ladder.

I'd liked to have taken my 1 year old to the match tonight, but I had to leave him at home because it's just too late a finish.

Will have to wait till the 5pm game out at Campbelltown in January before that will happen.

Having said that, I think the Club needs to have another go at explaining how to release seats, because obviously that isn't happening enough again this season.

King Mitch should've had a hat trick.

Wasn't Redmaynes fault, and all the people booing at full time need to pipe down.

They pay their money, they are perfectly entitled to boo if they are unhappy at what their money has bought them.

If people want to boo I guess they can, I prefer it if people don't and isn't something I would do personally. Some odd decisions from Popa, wont have a pop at him as he has proved time after time that he gets it right eventually, but very frustrating times indeed.

The people booing are ridiculous like small brats chucking a tantrum when things don't go their way . In my experience they have the least football knowledge of anyone in the crowd and the least loyalty quite often turning up every 3rd or 4th game if we are not winning .

They usually become pathologically obsessed with bagging one player ( atm its redmayne but dino, d'appuzo, bridge , haliti , golec , ruka etc have copped it in the past ) .

I find that these people are kaarnts and I make it my mission to let them know during the game . **** off you negative pricks with your half glass empty attitudes . Just **** right off and die !

On a positive note when we have a bad performance we usually don't see them for a while .

a 3-5-2 would have been more plausible in this game to get on the front foot to win the game but Popa does not like to play a 2nd striker... he is too stubborn and believes his system still works regardless.

Arnie knows what game plan Popa has and thats why he has the wood on us for the last 3 seasons... teams are able to easily figure us out very easily as the game goes on. If you remember in S3 in the first derby, we were up 2-0, Arnie changes his tactics and the Smurfs were able to pull one back and they go on to win the game.

If we are down 2-0, Popa will use the same substitution, the same tactics and nothing changes.

Why 7.50pm start? A lot of supporters have little ones (kids).10pm finish is tough if you have to get them home and into bed.I bet you'll find the earlier games are better attended.

*Yawn* Just another crap excuse. 7 30 really going to change things? Just call us Goldilocks FC. Time for people to harden up and actually support our team. 12k on a Saturday night? ******* pathetic.

This is what I love about our Club and our Supporters - We get the biggest crowd of the 3 games played so far this weekend, and we're still not satisfied. :)

Seriously though, the Club needs to do a better job explaining to members how to pass on their tickets.

Especially after the stuff up with the round 1 Derby ticketing.

    It's not going to happen.

    - Not Redders fault tonight.

    - We rely too much on Mitch. If he is off we seem to be.

    - Our visa players are not that good. They make the difference in this league. Borda - meh. Bruno - well he may as well pack his bags now

    - we were the better team but they missed a sitter and should have a penalty in the second half

    - Crowd is a massive disappointment. Maybe they were all at Slipknot. How do we have 18k members and only 66% turn up on a Saturday evening. We have 7k more members than the Smurfs yet they got 3k more for the same game. Wonder if the club can tell who is not showing up. I'd love the know the reasons. Always some can't make it but a third... that's really, really bad..

i wish i went to slipknot instead

TBF no one plays with 2 up front anymore no matter what the score is . In theory having 2 up front should be more attacking but often makes it worse as teams can create less chances ( see recent Socceroos game with Juric and Apo ) .

When Melling came on it looked like in attack he was trying Barcelona style to split the centre backs and let the left and right fullbacks both get further forward creating a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 in attack instead of only one of Clisby or Neville going forward in attack . But unfortunately unlike Barca Clisby and Neville can struggle with the decision to stay or go forward .

Saying that Popovic always makes the same substitutions is not really unusual as all coaches mostly make the same substitutions .Strikers come on for strikers midfielders for midfielders etc . Taking off a defender and putting on striker is what some people want but you rightfully only see that in the under 12's on a Saturday .

Bulut has been playing badly so he was dropped

Martinez has been good off the bench so he started .

You can't coach a player not to do a **** back pass or miss multiple shots at goals and lol to those that think we don't practice shooting at training and only do fitness work !

also with the kayne west song they need to bring back the vocals it had a lot less energy without them it doesnt work without the vocals

pre game was actually good despite the lawn bar being ****

we are not going to win our next 4 matches, mitch was garbage tonight and we didnt really have anyone who could come off the bench to score goals

It is gutting not being able to be clinical in front of goal that has hurt us as we created enough chances for 10 goals but I'm not that dispondent for the season ahead.

It was great football to watch but had it been 2-0 or 3-0 at half time it would have been a very different story. The issue with not putting the game to bed is that we keep on attacking leaving ourselves exposed at the back & the other team feel like they are in the game late into the game.

Once we get a comfortable lead it is about game management. What do I mean? We can control the game a bit better. Slow down the pace of the game & just look a bit more comfortable. Right now I felt at 1-0 we were desperate to score & even at 2-0 last week we just didn't feel comfortable. I feel this is because we are lacking confidence at the back & the new team is taking time to gel.

Frustrating yes but hopefully the boys are doing some shooting practice this week

I have to agree with Mack and others who argue that Redmayne should have gone out to try and claim the poor backpass with his hands.

His initial reading of it must have been that it would be a 50/50 and a keeper, contesting such a ball within his own area cannot afford to opt to go with his feet, particularly when he is more central.

From memory this incident originated from an unnecessary pass back from our left in the Mariner's half of the field. Once again, we put ourselves under pressure from a situation where we are attacking and in control.

That said, there were some good passages of play, though some players were off their game, particularly Mitch. Apart from his two misses, there was one moment when he burst down the left and saw Santa just beyond the line of the penalty spot - but played, what for him should have been his usual inch-perfect cross low and in the gap between keeper and Santa, back into the defenders.

With better finishing and a bit of luck (Jumpei hitting crossbar) we may have been well ahead by halftime, though we were lucky not to concede a couple in that second half.

The race to the bottom of the table is on it's way.

I said recently that, on paper, only Jets and CCM have worse starting 11s than us. Not only did we draw against them at home, they both realised that we are crap and went for us. The decline in the second half is alarming and we were lucky to not lose in the last 10 mins.

Just how bad are Cornflakes and Borda in comparison with Spira and Alberto? Castro and Keogh are likely to pick our defence apart next week.

Andreu is missing left right and centre.

Martinez, Jumpei, Bulut will score goals in people's imagination only while Bobo, Holosko, Brosque and Ninkovic win the games for the Smurfs.

Redmayne is oozing the opposite of confidence.

We will need a gk, a cb, a midfielder and a strong cf if we want to be competitive.

I think the situation with members not turning up is something that needs to be fixed ASAP. The fact that only a few single tickets were available leading up to the game and to end up with such a low crowd is ridiculous.

I am not sure what everyone is expecting. This is still one of our better starts to the season. We are notoriously slow starters. I think it's partially due to blowing the team up after every season which just does my head in. I know there are reasons for it but out of all the A-league teams, we are easily the worst offenders. How I would kill to have players like Andreu and Alberto back in this side. They were little gems who you would do everything to keep them. I would like to think the club tried without penny pinching, not sure on that one. None of us are involved in contract negotiations so how would we know. Just as much as we could have won last night, we easily could have lost also, Connor Pains miss, Clisby with a clear hand ball in the box. Not giving up on the season just yet but it is only exacerbated by our ACL commitments.

I was also annoyed by our poor crowd showing ffs. How many of our members are squatting on tickets just to go to big games. At least when members in our group can't make it they all make an effort in getting tickets to a good home. It was a perfect night for football and just over 12k turned up. Is this part of our DNA now, it's a sad state of affairs.

Post of the season! I believe we are a 6th to 10th place side. There are much better balanced squads across the league compared to our one this season. One thing we are consistent at is dropping off in games.... nothing new here and has been happening since season 2.

The mariners were punching holes in us the same way the jets were during that second half. We **** around too much at the back and always try to play these tricky flicks around the 18 yard box.

During the warmup, i was watching the mariners taking shots at their keeper and they were hooking them wide and skying them into the RBB.... It is going to be a long season this year but what did we expect. I hate comparing but look at east sydney's defensive recruits compared to ours.... the clean sheets say it all really. The only time we looked decent was on a counter attack.

    • We've handled your physical games before, and we were still capable of beating your team as we have some before. Our defence should have done better but we had so many clear cut chances that both Nunez and Salah wasted them for their own selfish reasons.
    • Exactly, Marko needs to "cosplay" as Bielsa squat down and smoke ciggies
    • Sorry but you know I have to put the laugh icon on that don't you? I thought Osman's and Owen's assessment on it was pretty fair. You create chances but you don't finish em, and your midfield isn't up for the physical ugly stuff, Everton managed to turn the game into the physical stuff that suits us. The other thing is DCL bullied your defence absolutely monstered them. Trent Alexander Arnold is a **** defender, he can hit the odd Hollywood ball for the highlights clips but he is a really poor defender. Badly at fault both goals, first one where the f was he it was WSW esque he was way out of position. 2nd one ok he's unlikely to win a header against DCL but at least get up and make a challenge (maybe you pressure him to put it off target). He just stood there. Arguably St Virgil shouldn't have let himself get stuck behind Tarkovski. Finally St Virgil post match, having a whinge about 1230 kickoffs, was funny. Lid it's Wednesday night go buy an alarm clock. I think I might grow a disc beard in tribute the Dyche Man (sorry Shaun ft ever doubting you, you tactical genius you) Anyone noticed that since the Chelsea loss Dyche has dropped the white junior bank clerk shirt look and gone for the trackie manager look. We have one both games. Rudna take note
