  • Del Piero Wins Derby For Sydney

    mack

Del Piero scored after a penalty miss rebounded to his feet to give Sydney FC a 1-0 win in the first ever A-League Sydney Derby.

    adpr3wsw300x165x1.jpg
The Italian fell after Aaron Mooy left his leg trailing behind him while in the box. Strebre Delovski, in the biggest match since his long injury lay-off saw Del Piero trip and awarded penalty. Del Piero took the penalty but was ordered to re-take his successful first attempt. Covic once again proved the hero by saving the penalty but Sydney FC gained another huge stroke of luck with the rebound falling to the feet of the Italian striker. Del Piero managed to get the job done this time around and Sydney FC took the lead and held it for the remainder of the match.

    covicr3sfc300x165x1.jpg
In front of 19,126 passionate fans the Wanderers had 19 shots at goal in the match but only put 3 on target, a very worrying sign for manager Tony Popovic as the Wanderers head into a tough away clash in Brisbane next week. Sydney full back Fabio started off the match with repeated fouls but referee Strebre Delovski failed to issue a yellow card. The first shot of the match fell to ex-Newcastle Jet Ali Abbas but put it wide right. Seb Ryall and Brett Emerton continued the pattern of Sydney FC fouls and Delovski finally ran out of patience and handed the Sydney stand-in captain a yellow card for delaying a restart, to applause from the RBB.

Del Piero skied the free kick from an Aaron Mooy foul on Kruno Lovrek, and followed that with a shot from outside the box that gave Covic his first real work to do in the match as he made a smart save down low. Minutes later Labinot Haliti took one of the first shots by the Wanderers but the effort was tame and well wide. Mitch Malia and Ali Abbas again wore the patience of the referee but he was lenient yet again and did not hand out any yellow cards. The failure of Devloski to punish the Sky Blues enabled them to press and tackle much harder than they otherwise might and I would hope that Popvoic is on the phone to the referees boss this week to ask why Strebre was so lenient to the away team.

The 17th minute started a period of domination for the Wanderers with a D'Apuzzo shot which resulted in a corner taken by Shinji Ono. After the ball was cleared Polenz was fouled by Fabio, who again escaped sanction. Kresinger took a header chance but it was off target, then Ali Abbas fouled Aaron Mooy. Time and time again Sydney FC fouled to break up the Wanderers momentum and time and time again Delovski failed to give any yellow cards out. The game entered a battling phase once Kresinger was flagged offside. Fouls accumulated from both teams, and as usual the referee decided to keep the cards in his pocket for the persistent Sydney foulers. With 32 minutes played a well worked throw-in allowed Bridge time to shoot just outside the box, only for the shot to flash past the far post. After several fouls from Abbas and Del Piero the referee finally gave Abbas a yellow card shortly before half-time. The free-kicked awarded was taken by Aaron Mooy and his strong free kick stung the palms of Necevski in the Sydney FC goal. Mark Bridge was lurking for a follow up attempt with his head but the ball was deflected out for a corner which came to nothing to end the first half.

    onor2sfc300x165x1.jpg
The first chance of the second half fell to Mark Bridge after a good run by Adam D'Apuzzo. The fullback cut inside and laid off a simple pass that Bridge ran on to and side footed towards goal. It was blocked by the Sydney FC defenders and went out for a throw-in. Poljak lofted a shot over the bar then came the crucial award of the penalty in the 55rd. Del PIero picked up the ball at the edge of the box after a 50/50 was lost by the Wanderers. Del Piero then dribbled into the area then cut the ball back. The Italian's legs tangled with Aaron Mooy's and Delovski award the penalty instantly. Del Piero slotted the first penalty in the right corner, but was ordered to retake it after his fellow players encroached. Covic heroically saved the second penalty but luck was with Sydney FC as the rebound fell straight to the feet of their marquee and he converted the simple 1 on 1 chance.

    halitir3sfc300x165.jpg
Aaron Mooy had several shots around the 60th minute but he put one wide and one was blocked. Sydney FC showed another disgraceful side of their play by beginning to time waste from the 60th minute. The first substitution of Lovrek by Antonis took an inordinate amount of time and Sydney FC did not stop their time-wasting for the rest of the match. Mark Bridge had another shot saved by Necevski then Poljak was given a well earned yellow card for a poor challenge from behind on Del Piero. Labinot Haliti was the first substitution of the match for the Wanderers with Hersi coming onto the wing. Nikolai Topor-Stanley missed the goal from a header. The oft-fouling Fabio was replaced by Petrovski, and on 75 minutes local hero Tarek Elrich came on to replace Poljak.

Ivan Necevski finally earned a yellow card for blatant time wasting with 10 minutes to play, and in total their time-wasting lead to the decision to play six minutes of injury time. Mark Bridge had the last major chance for the Wanderers but his header yet again didn't trouble the keeper. The Wanderers were unable to mount any significant pressure during the injury time period and the game ended with a 1-0 loss to the Wanderers in the first ever A-League Sydney Derby.

Tony Popovic will have to ring the changes, as the attack faltered yet again. The defence and midfield performed superbly but they are being let down by their point man. Dino Kresinger is consistently half a step behind where he needs to be and it is costing the Wanderers points. That match was there for the taking. No-one from Sydney FC except Del Piero showed much of a threat but Western Sydney were unable to capitalise. Kresinger will be a liability against the very fast paced Roar outfit that is up next. My choice if I was in Tony Popovic's position would be to drop Dino, and play with Kubi up front, Haliti and Tahj Minnecon on the wings. The team have played their hearts out but tactically the midfield is not linking up with the focus of the attack in a fashion that suits either group. By increasing the pace up front the midfield duo of Mooy and Ono can start to play defence splitting balls in behind the opposing defence and instead of having a lumbering target man they would have players with pace to burn running onto it.

The Wanderers next match is against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane on Saturday the 27th of October at 7:45 Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

But your truly terrible tipping is so much fun to enjoy.

I'm pretty terrible at it, I do only spend about 2 seconds thinking about it and prefer the dramatic to the realistic so I'm glad you're enjoying it. I don't think I've got any right so far.

Del doesnt get all the credit, our strikers get full credit for being about as useful as me infront of goals, and the rest of sydney fc get credit for wasting half the match on the ground or taking about 3 days to kick a goal kick

$2 million diver, pretty embarrassing. A shame that was a match winner, but it is what it is.

I've been a big advocate of giving Dino time, thinking he would come good but you were spot on with Dino Mack. Sometimes seemed a good five metres behind. Perhaps the decent speed of this league is too much for him?

Perhaps time for a different tact up front.

Really feel for Ante. Didn't deserve that. He was unlucky Del Piero's penalty was so **** and straight that he couldn't palm it out and away from goal.

So true, Ante has been a absolute stand out for us. Two weeks in a row now he has been unlucky. Last week saves a penalty and then gets a soft goal scored against due to a muck up in the defense. Then he stops del pieros goal and del luckily got the rebound. Covic is one of the best keepers in the A-league, if not the best!

There is another compelling reason (to go to the next derby at Allianz Stadium). The Wanderers fans are coming. Just three matches young, they are already proving one of the most vocal in the entire league and have thrown down the gauntlet to the Cove of Sydney FC.

How so?? Well, the true test of a fan is not when the team is winning, but when they're behind and the best can lift a team, drive their players on, put doubt in the minds of opponents and create a home ground none look forward to visit.

And the Wanderers have already excelled in this department. Drums. Voice. Chants. Exhortations. They made an historic night for football, a joy to witness live. It won't be long, given the proud history of the region dating from the first game in this country, when Parramatta stadium will not be a theatre of dreams, but of nightmares.

Great work guys and gals - and I have photos!

What a champion. I was in Adelaide and said to the boys he will save it and he did. And same thing last night, said it again and he did. You can see how much he wants it. He pays with his heart. Shame it bounced to the diver strait away.

Guys I've got mates who support SFC, and apart from a thing or two of us teasing each other about the Derby and after. I've heard nothing but praise for WSW Club, Team, and not to mention the fans. Everyone loved the atmosphere, and Sydney as a City needed this, needed the RBB to be correct. A team that was together 3 months and loses to a 50-50 penalty is not bad. We will only get better.

When you find time can you email me a copy of the pic you snapped of my boys & I? No doubt I'll have another stupid look on my face, as I didn't even realise you had your lens pointed our way. You're lucky it didn't shatter :)

Was standing outside north parra maccas waiting for a ride home and a bloke wearing a Sydney FC shirt came up to me patted me on the back and basically said 'keeping supporting them, they will come good' he echoed the comments made above about the brilliant atmosphere created by WSW and the sense of occasion. I just wanted to abuse him, but I couldn't after he said such nice things about the team etc lol.

So, fair play to them in that regard.

We are certainly leaving an impression on the league, if not on the scoreboard!

I was most amused by Sydney supporters on my way home. They seemed to be able to go from "there's only one team in sydney" (on the back of their "a team for all sydney" banner) to "west sydney is a hole" without any trace of irony.

Well done to the RBB for the amazing noise and passion. Pre game was an amazing atmosphere with all the colour and passion. From responses I've heard (people who watched the telecast), we outnumbered them in the stands. The RBB I could hear from the middle of the ground, and you were definitely going at it all night.

Bad luck about the result, but give it time guys. I think in a few years time when we are winning we will be the team to watch at Parramatta Stadium. The place is already creating an unbelievable atmosphere. Well done to all involved. And great to see no problems afterwards with the crowd.

I feel so dirty for what I'm about to say, but, our resident troll WP almost a point. I wouldn't say Mack is embarassing himself but the article is definitely written through red & black hooped glasses.

There doesn't have to be contact for a foul to be committed. That said, ADP went down easier than a two dollar hooker who'd just been handed a twenty.

Although we were on the wrong side of the equation a bit of controversy such as this will only add more spice and passion to the rivalry.

    From an RBB perspective:

My favourite moment of the night was seeing how our card display looked on the big screen, and the hugs & handshakes that ensued as we'd managed to pull off something epic with such limited time & manpower. Don't think I've had a footballgasm like that since the "Miracle of Istanbul" in May 2005. We started the game strong and from all reports dominated the battle of the active ends in the 1st half, despite The Cove having the distinct advantage of a roof to echo whatever sound they might've been making.

Second half we lost some momentum and continuity but given the number of first timers we had, there are promising signs for the future.

    Shoulder to shoulder lads!!!

It was a great match to experience, not always the prettiest football but man it was fun!! We lost, and were unlucky, its fair to say the difference was luck and 2 million dollars. Im not gonna whinge about the penalty, he made the most of it but it was a penalty and a silly tackle.

I was hearted about a lot of our football and performance especially in the second half bar a few things which il rant about in a second :).

And once the final whistle went i realised i had such a good time that yes it hurts and sucks to loose to the smurfs, but i knew that next time weel more then compete and I'm confident we can take them down and get out season ball rolling!!! Cant wait till next home game v Heart!!

    To the game.

Polenz - This guy is a machine!! love him! He is going to be ever so important for us!

Defense as a whole was great, bait shaky in the first half, but even D'Apuzzo stepped up abit which I've been very critical of him. Still not convinced he's a guaranteed starter but if he performs like that again he will make it hard for anyone to take his spot.

Midfield, what can i say, i honestly think we have one of the best midfields in the comp. Mooy and Ono are immense, there work rate, in defence and attack is great to watch and there always positive and controlled. Some wayward passes but feel get there! Poljak seems like the perfect sidekick for these 2 aswell. He's gt a great engine, and whilst he needs some work with his distribution at times, he's dribbling runs through the centre can be damaging if he can find a that final pass better. And i love how he's always a threat with a long shot, puts defenders and 2 minds and allows him to either shoot or try a neat 1-2.

Attack, ok wow where to start.

Kresinger - I hope we kept his receipt. By far the most disappointing signing. Yes he's been little threat to goal and at times, but my most critical assessment of him is that he offers nothing else, he doesn't peel of his defenders to link up with the team, he doesn't win any 50/50 balls in the air, he makes no off the ball runs whatsoever..nothing! popa cannot seriously consider playing him next match.

Bridge - horrible first half, he ruined the way we can play by not playing out wide and always coming inside. we need width! Second half he he was much better, and got in good positions, held possession, but absolutely no quality to finish them off.

Haliti - not terrible, but didn't really offer anything with his possession, although seemed to get hacked a lot.

Hersi - why in the world didn't he start, he's the quality we need up in attack with the useless striker we have. And i can see a great partnership grow with he and Polenz.

popa needs to shuffle the attack, we can't play Bridge out wide any more unless were playing a mobile and fast Striker. Kresinger needs to be relegated to bench or out of the squad with Bridge up front (i know but at least he offer mobility until we find a suitable striker), or we give Gibbs a run (not a fan of him, but aswell he offers mobility and pace and work rate) or even Haliti but still no real finisher.

Hersi needs to start and Minniecon and Kubi need to be in the team.

    _____Hersi____Ono____Minniecon____

    _____Someone other then Dino!!!______

i suggest we get on the phone to babalj!

I kind of have to agree. . .

Contact was minimal, but there was contact. The blokes been playing in Italy FFS, that's going to happen. It'd be the same if WSW bought an italian like De Rossi, he'd go down in the box if there was contact.

There were 4 mins of injury time. I don't quite know why your complaining about Necevski time wasting when the time added on equated to the time that Necevski + others (minus Fabio and Ryall who were actually injured a little) had wasted.

The game was poorly reffed on both sides, both fans were good. Just a shame that the Wanderers attack is blunter than a spade.

Definately time to shake things up in attack, maybe not against the banana roar who will be a tough test, but in 2wks against the heart its time for Kubi to get a start, hersi & minnecon also

Red, those throat lozenges you supplied the RBB with were certainly used. About 30 minutes in they were distributed around the bay.

Dont think it was the dive, although going down easy is another story. The guy had like 5 Wanderers players around him and noone could tackle him. You cant make mistakes against a classy player like Del Piero. He will make you pay.

If there's no contact then it's not as penalty. Only way it could be a penalty without contact is if it was an attempted trip, which it wasn't. if there's no contact and the referee still deems it a foul it's an indirect free kick for impeding the progress of an opponent.
