  • Derby Draw At Least We Didn't Lose

    mack

The final regular season Sydney Derby match ended without a Wanderers win, didn't end in a loss either.

Western Sydney haven't had the best results against Sydney FC in the past two seasons, but with top of the table beckoning, they came out and dominated the early stages against Sydney FC. A mere 13 minutes into the game the visitors had the opening goal. A simple run down the right flank for Mark Bridge, he cut back onto his favoured right foot, then launched a cross into the penalty area. Dario Vidosic was unmarked, and from 12 yards out glanced a header that was past Vedran Janjetovic in moments.

Sydney FC managed a fluke goal to get back on level terms just after half an hour. Scott Jamieson was beaten by Holosko to ball played in behind the Wanderers fullback, Holosko whipped a cross in along the turf that beat everyone to make way over to David Carney. The ex-Newcastle winger rolled the ball back into the penalty area to Alex Brosque, and his backheel flick deflected off Jamieson and trickled past debutante goalkeeper Liam Reddy at the near post for an own goal.

The second half was typical derby fare, with neither side truly taking the match by storm. Chances were few and far between, but both sides kept looking for a winner. A late set piece for the Wanderers nearly turned into disaster, as Sydney FC broke on the counter, only for the final shot to curl just wide.

Despite the draw, an extraordinary 6-3 win for Perth Glory against Brisbane Roar over in Western Australia saw the Wanderers draw level on points with the Roar, but ahead on goal difference by a solitary goal.

It's the cops fault for letting them in apparently. Just like how a pitch invasion is ok as long as you're celebrating

A Wanderers fan with a scarf under his jacket made it into the cove and went right down the front, whipped his scarf out and started cheering. The cove weren't impressed and beat the **** out of him before the riot police got there and dragged him out. Guy in front of me managed to choke him for a few seconds and the guy behind me flykicked him in the gut. Really incited the cove. Started having a go at the cops for letting him in"

For all the talk in the media about "violence" (when discussing flares), this is actual violence in the cove. They really set the standard don't they?

I'm sorry, but that's pretty stupid of that guy.

I strongly suspect that a Smurf would've copped the same treatment, if not worse, from the RBB gents.

    A few thoughts...

    - Security was ridiculous but partly expected. As I said before in the other thread, I had no bag and skinny jeans on and still got pulled aside. If I wanted to hide a flare, there's a much more concealed spot than my bra and it's somewhere they definitely can't search :ninja:

    - No Flares!! Pleasantly surprised. Well done everyone. Now can we move on...

    - Game was very meh. The goal was impressive and probably the stand out moment of the match. The last 20mins was painful to watch. It would have killed me if we conceded at the death to lose again.

    - Why didn't Popa use his subs earlier? It feels like a waste to have Santa coming on in the 85th min when he's been in such good form recently.

    - I got to finally meet Mack! :woah:

    - That car park at Allianz is a pain in the arse to get out of. And it's a ripoff as well. The price used to be $15, then $20 and now it's gone up again to $25. I might park at one of the high schools next time. At least my money will help out the kids.

Mixed views like everyone else - we still aren't at our best but we are on top (thanks Perff) so will take that. Hope the next 2 weeks ruins East Sydney's campaign. Agree that the use of Santa was criminal.

Off the field - glad there was no flares. The over the top security will continue for sure. Any males not carrying a bad draws attention for the flares apparently. I was really worried one of the Smurfs would make thier way to the RBB, let off a flare and we lose the points.

Not sure how we will go against Perth - next 2 weeks could make or break us.

All been said, Reddy was good, happy for Hammil, Neville was meh but lets be honest it is a miracle we are on top, considering a quarter of the team wages (salary cap) is not even in the squad (Pio), so boys really punching above and got to be happy with that/

At the risk of being exposed as a fraud and being howled down or even lynched, I though Gillett had a decent game as ref. One or two WTF moments but unlike some of the absolute mong moments we've seen in previous matches there was nothing that made me feel like getting on a tall building with an AK-47 and waiting for KGJ, Williams etc to pass by.

Some of our decision making and concentration at the back (including DMs) was horrible.

They had about 3 very good chances, you expect to score from just from our sloppy passes straight to them in our third.

Simon was killing us in the air.

I think a tall strong in the air forward would really complement our team or at least have one as back up. (Please not Simon tho)

Not sure a striker would of helped last night.

Defense was a much bigger concern.

FC was given so much space when in our back third, we weren't compact at all. Looked like they could punished us each time they attacked.

Apart from Reddy throwing the ball at Jurman, I noticed another little funny moment.

In the second half, as the WSW players were getting ready for a set piece, Mitch has casually walked over to Janjetovic's drink bottle.

He takes a gulp and then deliberately unscrews the bottle, tipping the remaining liquid on the ground. He causally jogs back to the rest of the team and the kick is taken

    heheheh

YES when I saw it I started telling my mates but they didn't believe me. What an absolute legend.

I'm pretty happy with the draw, works out much better for us than for them in the end. Biggest win for me though is getting confirmation from my smurf friend that the RBB was the only thing you can hear in the stadium. Completely shamed the smurfs in terms of support.

Might be time for a tactics rethink.

We have given up more clear chances in the last 2 weeks than rest of the season combined. Teams have figured out that our fullbacks both attack and there is space in behind.

Maybe need to get Neville to play the old d'appuzzo role and play safer and deeper.

Is it just me or does it seem, not as many people are making the trip from west to east.

3 derbys, 2x this year at Allianz making the derbys not as big as before.

Would say split was probably 70/30.

I was in 54 so couldn't really tell about the tier under us.

Can never hear the cove from our end but visually it looked like they took a large number of 'rest breaks'.

Id go 60/40 or just under. More than last time i thought.

However less will go if they keep price gouging. E.g. only adult tickets in active at almost $40 a pop.

My friend was in the VIP section (toff prick), so pretty high up in the middle of either the east/West stands. The only time he could hear the Cove was even we stopped to change between chants :D Glad he had the honesty to admit this.

They top tier with the corporate boxes seemed prediminantly red and black. Quite a few of our jerseys amongst smurf colours in their designated areas. Looked like 55:45 to me. More of us than last time.

If the smurfs/SCG trust want to keep playing these rip off the WSW fans games they'll be killing the goose that lays the only golden eggs they can get.

Considering their two derbies constitute about 81K of their total of 197K (or 40% of their overall season's attendance) in 2015/16, if they end up deterring us away fans from traveling their bottom line will hurt a shitload more than ours.

They need us more than we need them

Just watching a replay now, Jamo got in there and made a great tackle/contact with Holosko just before we scored. Then it was all about the quick release, we were up and in their goal within about 3 passes.
