  • Derby Snatched From Wanderers Hands

    mack

Sydney FC took late advantage of a wrongly disallowed goal for the Wanderers to take the first Sydney Derby of the season 1-0.

With precious little separating the two sides, a pair of key moments at the end of each half decided the game.

The first, the Wanderers storming down the left flank with Mitch Nichols who delivered a pin-point cross into the box, with Jaushua Sotirio lobbing the Sydney FC keeper with an inventing flick on header. Before Sotirio could even start the celebration in earnest it was snuffed out by the linesman. The replays showed that a trailing leg from the Sydney FC defender was playing Sotirio on and the goal should have stood.

Sydney FC were on the back foot for the majority of the game, but found the back of the net with their only shot on target. It came in the 88th minute, a free kick that wasn't properly cleared found it's way back into the penalty area, Ninkovic's first touch saw him well placed to strike on goal, and he beat Redmayne with a shot that nestled into the back of the net at the far post.

It was not a deserved victory for the hosts, but the Wanderers had ample opportunity to make up for the disallowed goal. Once again, the set pieces from the Red & Black were aimed dreadfully, with corners that flew over everyone to go out for a throw-in on the opposite side, free kicks that vanished into the crowd or were played short before being lost. The team need to find their cutting edge or it will be another long season, this time with no prospect of Asian Champions League football to distract from the A-League.

I know we all say it tongue in cheek but absolutely our season has to start Sunday.  Perth are just about the weakest side in the HAL (maybe the Jets and Mariners would disagree !). But to have them at home as far as I'm concerned it is a must win.

Yeah they beat a team yesterday we drew with.

    I'm expecting the worst.

They pretty much sat back all game & hit on the break. It's not the worse case scenario but we need to be wary of the counter attack. A goal in the first 30 minutes will settle the boys & the crowd!
Do we have the speed to deal with a counter attack?

I don't think we have been really tested, in our opening three games:

    - Brisbane counter attacked in the second half & if not for Redmayne they could have gotten another one or two. Didn't deal with it well & I also think our CB's weren't having their best game.

    - Adelaide counter attacked by long switches & attacking out wide. I thought we dealt with it really well & weren't too exposed.

    - ESFC tried to counter attack & we were getting them playing plenty of long balls. I thought we did really well to limit them & they really struggled to pass the ball plus create any decent opportunities.

    - Perth will be a test, it was interesting to see that Perth sat back & hit Adelaide on the counter. It will be very interesting to see how we deal with it. If we play like we did in the derby, we will have no problems.

    Long Post

100% agree, didn't know one of the mega's crapped itself! I also feel that at a derby you get plenty of people who aren't always in the RBB, so don't know the chants as well as others. So when we sing certain chants & you can't hear the tune properly so we suffer. In "our lives we give" & ESFC diss chant you couldn't hear the chant at the outer bays which meant it was hard to sing plus was very disjointed. 100% agree on spreading people out amongst the RBB & theoretically should result in better results! I don't know about walking up the aisles & shouting at people. Some people respond well to it & others don't!

More time, it will come is rubbish. Season started 3 weeks ago, not in another 3. If you are paid to do a job you do it from day 1 just like all the new boys for Sydney, Phoenix, Glory and City did.

And just like Andreu and Dimas looking good in the middle of the park. For me, Vidosic, Nichols and Mehbratu will be the combination that'll bring goals. Pio ne3eds the ball at his feet around the box, not Topor3 from the other end.

From my observations of the first 3 games, most defenders can easily deal with Pio (even if you gave the ball to his feet). He has to come back a bit to get the ball as he is being marked out of the game, and when he does get an opportunity he doesn't have that explosive speed to beat defenders.

I would give him another two to three weeks, and if he keeps going the way he is you would have no choice but to start Santalab in the next game.

Agreed, it was critical this season got off to a flying start and it hasn't happened.

I'm not part of the Popaout whinefest but questions need to be asked, I don't feel like another 10 rounds of misery before the team works out how to play as a team.

Props to guest7 for getting his voice & mug on the video :good:

    Well spoken mate!

    Not enough RBB in there

Not a lot of both supporter bases on there but it is a 15 minute documentary is very difficult to fit everything in! Probably collected 2-3hrs of footage but hard to fit it all in.

What an advertisement for football in this country! Superb!

I thought this too initially, however you have to remember that this video is aimed to an audience from mainly Europe. And that we are somewhat biased ourselves so it seemed like there wasn't that much RBB in it and we just wanted more. I thought it was very fair and a good reflection on the game.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but there seems to be a bit of footage of the alleged splinter group from the march heading towards the SFC march near the footbridge..... Seems like Copa90 were there....  :ninja:

    That was bloody awesome

Yes...and loved the two classic moments from smurf fans

"Where the f were they (i.e. Wanderers) in 2004"...umm, we didn't exist because your part-owner and FFA boss decided not to have a team in the west.
