  • Dino? Ono! Wanderers Wreck Roar Resolve

    mack

Dino Kresinger won a penalty that was converted by Shinji Ono in the 87th minute to defeat Brisbane Roar 1-0 and propel the Wanderers into the top 4.

    tifor10br.jpg
On a night blowing a gale and where the heavens threatened to open, Kresinger was hauled down in the box by Matthew Jurman and Shinji Ono opened his account for the Wanderers by expertly sending Michael Theo the wrong way from the spot.

During the team walk-out the RBB members unveiled their tifo for the night, a display of two-stick flags that spelled out "Shoulder To Shoulder" as well as a tribute to RBB member @Benched, his response can be seen in the comments below the article.

The tone of the match was set when the Wanderers pressed Brisbane from the kick-off and Iacopo La Rocca ran onto a punched clearance by Theo to hit the ball just over the bar. Berisha butchered what was the best chance of the half, when Ben Halloran found Besart Berisha with a through ball. He was being played onside by the Wanderers right back Polenz, with only Covic to beat he chose to chip Covic but his shot was directed straight into the hands of the big keeper. Halloran then sounded a warning shot of his own by out pacing Adam D'Apuzzo down the flank but the narrow angle gave him little chance of scoring and the ball again safely made it's way into the hands of Covic.

Shinji Ono made an impact in the 26th minute. Theo was unable to find a team-mate with his long throw due to a slip in the outfield, the Wanderers pounced, the ball worked it's way from Polenz to Ono. He was quickly closed down on the edge of the area, he faked a shot on his right foot, shot on his left, a looping deflection near caught Theo out at his near post.

Shane Stefanutto and Hersi were both yellow carded within minutes of each other, Stefanutto for dissent and Hersi for stupidly kicking the ball away. The game cooled down, neither side were able to put a shot on target before the half-time whistle blew.

    dinor10br.jpg
Covic was called into action immediately after half-time, when some pinball wizardry left Erik Partaluu with a shot on goal. Covic saved smartly with his feet and the Wanderers cleared the danger. Mitch Nichols announced his arrived into the match by cutting down Shinji Ono who had started a counter-attack for the Wanderers. Joey Gibbs had a somewhat ineffectual game up front and his most telling contribution came in the 69th minute, Hersi bamboozled the Roar defence to unleash a cross into the centre, the delivery was behind the young striker and there was no way for Gibbs to gain any power for his header.

Dino Kresinger replaced Gibbs and had a major part in deciding the result. Mateo Poljak threaded a ball to Kresinger who turned his marker despite being held tightly for several meters. Jurman finally dragged down the big target man inside the box. Law 12 (Fouls & Misconduct) clearly states that holding that starts outside the box but continues into the box must be punished with a penalty kick. Referee Alan Milliner had no hesitation in awarding a yellow card to Jurman and making the correct penalty decision. With a very loud crowd of 6,755 fans waiting, Ono stepped up to the mark. Michael Theo was carded for time-wasting but the veteran midfielder didn't let it get to him at all. With carefully measured strides Ono struck the ball sweetly, sending Theo the wrong way and burying the penalty. The team came together in a huddle after the goal for their celebration.

The goal stirred the Roar into action. Rado Vidosic made a dual substitution, Jack Hingert and Ben Halloran being replaced by Yuji Takahashi and James Meyer respectively. In the space of a minute the Roar nearly equalised three times. The first came from a corner, Jurman nearly earning redemption, he flew above Kresinger and Poljak, Covic stood firm again, lightning reflexes firing for him to hold the goal-bound effort. Mitch Nichols regained possession just inside the Wanderers half, spotted Covic off his line and attempted an audacious long-range drive that smacked the crossbar. The ball stayed in and forced the Western Sydney defence to clear it out for a corner. It was a poor corner, only going as far as Jason Trifiro. He could only clear it as far as Shane Stefanutto and the ball was returned with interest, it flew past every player in front of him, before smacking the far post.

In his post-match interview manager Tony Popovic declared it a great result, saying that the team were finally being rewarded for the football they have been playing. He also expressed that as long as his team are playing their tight structure and are building the play the way they are, that he has belief in the team and faith in every player in the squad. Popovic specifically mentioned Reece Caira who has yet to make even the bench for the club as a player who is there because the club believes in him. Tahj Minniecon squandered a chance to seal the points on the counter-attack, Paartlu wasting the final chance in the 92nd minute, a very tame effort that fell safely into the hands of Covic.

The almighty din at the final whistle would have lifted the roof off had Parramatta Stadium been built with one at the conclusion of another tight contest against Brisbane. The squad celebrated with the supporters around the ground, with Ante Covic leading a rendition of 'Who Do We Sing For' for the RBB to put the cap on a brilliant night for the club.

The Wanderers next match is against Sydney FC at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday the 15th of December at 7:45pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

man I'm over the moon with this win!!! Absolutely made my weekend!

Loved the CPC once again. Sat behind em, and every roar corner a wave of the cpc would gather and hurl abuse.. classic!!!

It was a good performance, once agin we had some really good chances, and some great screamers that were so close, just need some luck and confidence! Some wayward and shocking passing throughout the game, but was very windy at times.

Hersi was outstanding. Left wing is still an issue at times. Cole didn't have the best game and Minniecon other then his shot on goal in the dying minuted was poor also. He seems to have lost pace and confidence in beating his player.

Gibbs had a poor game, didn't always have the greatest support but just wasn't his night. Left wing and upfront is where things generally broke down for us.

ok here it is..... DINO! Much better performance in his short cameo. Brought much more enthusiasm and aggression which he really lacked in all of his other games. If he can bring this to the table whenever he gets a chance and perhaps better adjusts to the game speed and gains confidence, hopefully we see a better more consistent player!!!

Was not happy with the boos from the fans at all. Yes he's been very disappointing and i my self have not been a fan at all of his, but its very poor form booing our own player!

Great too see Ono on the scoresheet!! not his best game but still was very solid for us. Just needs to finish his chances better.

Overall great signs. 4th in the league!!!!!! YEW! Cant wait to see Mooy return oozing confidence. ANd hope to see some Kubi next week in the derby!! we need him left wing!

A big thankyou to you all for the banner and well wishes. I was bloody gobsmacked. Simon Hill had a few words about it as well and it's these type's of things why I love the RBB. We are all brother's and sister's and we do stand shoulder to shoulder.

I miss my game days so much and hanging out with you guys. I'll be back on the terrace soon.

    I love youse all!

It was a classic. He mentioned I'd been in hospital, announced my name FFS, and that I had 'shoulder to shoulder' tattooed on my back. Said it was a cheerio from everyone on the terrace.

Fair dinkum, I nearly had to get the tissues out, it was awesome.

When Kop and ATP mentioned it to Erebus, Speccy and myself we knew we had to be involved. Glad it achieved the intended result :)

(Wind was ******* mental when holding it up though lol)

great performance by most of the team, no weak link we were so close to scoring so often and most of the missed were not due to a lack of skill but were very unlucky i am so proud of the wanderers

    Agree with all that dd.

especially the sentiments re booing our own player, i clapped him as loud as i could, even though he has frustrated me no end (until tonight) ;)

    And get well soon benched!

Well done to the team today. Very gutsy win as the lads were under the pump for a lot of the 2nd half. Really unlucky not to have scored one or two in the 1st half though. Now onto the derby we go with Mooy back as well.

Well done to the TIFO team for putting that together, and special mention to Kop & ATP for the banner they made for Benched. Shows just what the RBB is all about. Brotherhood, Unity...SHOULDER TO SHOULDER.

Benched, hurry up and get back on the terrace, The Woolpack & Parra stadium are complaining that beer sales have dropped dramatically in your absence

Congratulations, guys. The better team on the night. Get well soon Sean - what a great show of support for you, and the team once again from the RBB.

When everyone started booing Kresinger, i was like guys you can't do that, but then later on when he won the penalty, it changed to "dino" chants. I think that boosted his confidence and remember him tapping his chest and acknowledged the east terrace. I think that gave him some good PR and hopefully brings him more confidence and that the crowd wont boo him anymore.

The east terrace started singing some chants through the game, especially nearing the end of the match which was good. A couple tried to get involved with the RBB ones like "who do you sing for?" and "wanderers, wanderers".

I remember that bays 66 and surrounding, possibly even more were getting more into the game. I thought the atmosphere was awesome especially for 6000+ people.

We are at our best when our defence is extremely well organised, which it was last night. I love these kind of battling performances - sturdy and strong, and then steal the gritty win at the death! The highlight of the match for me, in terms of individual performance, was when Hersi was surrounded by about 6 BR players, and then weaved his way through the lot of them!

Hersi, Polenz and Poljak are so 'gun' it is ridiculous! When all three are playing together we look a very decent team.

I thought we fans were excellent also!

And for we gambling addicts who always bet on the Wanderers ... we won!

My two leg: Wanderers into Australia -5 was a nice little double.

Proud to say I've never booed Dino, chanted his name when he came on yesterday and the faith paid off. He fought so hard for that ball and was brought down where it counted.

Wish I could type more but my keyboard is being a piece of ****. Great showing from the RBB yesterday boys and girls, you all did very well and should be proud. March went off without a hitch as well as far as I know.
