  • Dropped Points In Wellington

    mack

Another second half slump was enough for the Western Sydney Wanderers to drop points against Wellington Phoenix tonight.

In a near carbon copy of the draw against Adelaide earlier this week, the Wanderers were well on top early, and cemented their advantage with the opening goal in the 28th minute. Having won a free kick on the right wing, Raul Llorente fired in a cross to the edge of the penalty area. The ball bounced off a number of players then dropped down in front of Brendon Santalab. The talismanic striker shaped up and fired at goal with a side foot volley that had Lewis Italiano with pace. Not long after Oriol Riera nearly doubled the advantage with a looping header that Italiano tipped over the bar.

Wellington manager Marco Kurz made a brace of changes at half-time, introducing Matija Ljujic and Nathan Burns and the change paid dividends. Roly Bonevacia lost out to Andrew Durante inside the Wanderers half, the ball rolled to Ljujic, with a gaping midfield hole in front of him and none of the Wanderers defenders closing him down the Serbian midfielder took a couples of touches to setup the long range strike of some 25 yards that blew past Janjetovic's right hand.

Brendan Hamill put the Wanderers position under further threat with an idiotic decision to hold a Wellington attacker when he had Michael Thwaite backing him up. Having been booked earlier, the second yellow was followed by a red and Hamill walked off the pitch leaving his side a man down.

Wellington arguably should have won the game in stoppage time, Matthew Ridenton broke the Wanderers offside trap and with two of his team-mates begging for a cutback Ridenton elected to bring the ball back onto his left and fired in a tame strike at goal.

The draw does nothing for the Wanderers position on the tale, as they will finish in 6th place regardless of the result of the Melbourne vs Perth game tonight. The Wanderers  face Melbourne Victory on Friday the 19th of January.

We are a team that hasn't gelled yet. With a new coach.

I still feel heaps happier about the team than I did 3-4 weeks ago.

We need more time - and some stability.

I don't think the majority of fans are happy about mediocre play or players.

Personally, the only avenue you have to show displeasure at the way the club is being run is to hand in the membership. You can rant and rave as much as you like, the club management will be polite in their replies and continue to take no notice.

    A job for life??

If you're talking about Gombau, he's only been with the team...what...10 weeks?

And for most of that time - if the story is correct - the coaching staff wasn't all working on his side?

We might need a bit more patience,  I think.

Agree with Baccus Snr......playing nothing like last season when he was one of  our best.

I am puzzled by the apparent lack of fitness and finesse shown this season. We are toast by the middle of the second half in most games. Have been all season ?

Our fitness/strength/conditioning coach left for esfc, and look at where they are at now?

Yes that's the guy that from season 1-4, where we won the league, won the acl, and where we can play the full 90 with none of our players looking drained after 60min of football..

That's where we are at atm.. Lack of conditioning from our players shows that we've only scored 1 goal after 60min of football this season.. In the first 60, we pay for it when we do not put away chances..

It's great to see the sense of humour many here display, tbh.

I can understand that some feel bitter about the frustrations the team is creating at the moment (both for themselves and for the supporters).

But when you look at what Jets supporters have gone through for years, in honesty, what SFC supporters went through for years, what the Nix supporters have gone through forever, etc there's nothing to do but look forward to the time when things click, and our team presents us with fewer frustrations.

We were so spoilt for those first few years, and we all want to get back to something of the excitement and passion we were able to feel back them, but it's going to take some time before that happens, I think.

I get the passion people have for their team. I'll happily support the Red & Black no matter what.

What I'll never understand is the venom and spite some people have shown to fellow team supporters, when things aren't all hunky dory and we're not beating everyone 10-0.

If I ever get like that it's time hang up the jersey in the wardrobe and leave it there for good.

^^ I do understand what you're saying there Sonar.

It's just hard to fill the gap that the first season's elation, and then its loss, has created - and people are sad, frustrated and even angry about it,

And maybe they don't know what to do with that sadness, frustration and anger, except to let it out here.

We all (including myself) need to take a reality check & come to terms with the fact that we've become a mid table club, devoid of a clear football philosophy. Such is the level of our decline, some within our club / support base appear to take solace in the fact that we may make the top six in a 10 team competition.

Given the playing resources at our disposal, including some of the best young players in the country, we continue to under perform. Unfortunately, it's becoming a regular theme year after year.

Whilst it won't stop me from attending games (I'll probs even go to Newy for the crucial NYL game in 2 weeks) I no longer set out on my journey with hope in my heart.

I don't understand why Gombau took 6 youth team players to NZ and only played one of them only because of red card.

Suman sitting on the pine was understandable. Why didn't he sub Bridge for Grozos or Majok when Bridge goes missing after about 60 minutes instead of Santalab.

Loving your club uncritically is false love. Maybe lose some weight dear drink less and I do love your hair that way okay now I'll shut up kinda love.

You can be loyal to you club, you can be critical of it's performances, coaching style, player selections, player and staff recruitment etc and still retain a sense of humour,,still keep some empathy for fellow supporters. It's not about accepting mediocrity, it's called facing reality.

In a perfect world we would spend millions on a squad that never loses. The worlds not perfect, neither is our team. Bame those responsible for recruiting THIS squad.

    indeed.

the last couple of home games at ANZ have been as depressing as I have experienced since standing on a sparsely populated hill in the rain at win stadium watching the nsl lurch towards its inevitable painful death.

A lot of the issues to my mind revolve around motivation. For players, club and supporters. The first few seasons it was there because we were a new club, and the players bought into what the supporters felt.

As we have seen  the last two seasons there is a lot more inconsistency. Players play poorly, cop the brunt of the fans. Play good for a few games. Then feel all is ok, and go back to mediocrity. There was also the issues with the new coach coming in.

It seems like when the players cop a little bit of flak from the fans, they lift. But after a few games we are back to square one. There is no sustained motivation to strive or work towards something. Even as a supporter I find it hard to lift for some games as I feel like we are going through the motions. I also believe we need a few more better players to turn things around. That is part of it anyway imo.

Yep the ANZ games have a very end of NSL days feel to them.

We shouldn’t be playing there (derby’s excepted)

We should be alternating games between Penrith and Campbelltown and spotless. Less than ideal but ANZ is killing us

I also look as the start of last season as being the start of the slump. We all knew moving out of parra into spotless would be a challenge, but also an opportunity to grow crowd. But club chose that season to penny pinch on the squad, we struggled and crowds dropped off, that’s set us back at least 2 years

Only positive was Carrusca, a class above the rest of our midfield.

Roly getting 3 points has to be trolling...he was absolutely woeful, as he is for most games. Atm I'd have him below every senior midfielder in our squad in the pecking order (and probably the juniors too if they're any good). His attempt to win that ball which led to their goal was absolutely disgusting, as was his performance from then on. Trying Hollywood passes in the 92nd minute when we're down to ten men ffs.

I don't know why we should even consider playing a Derby at ANZ once Parra is back.  They were literally flogging this to death with cheap tickets and still only managed 36k.  30k rocking at a full Parra with a little bit of scarcity to encourage people to want to go more is better.  I imagine the attendance at ANZ will only get worse.  It's an absolute shithole and I am quite glad I boycotted this dump even as a family season ticket holder after having the misfortune of going twice to home games and regretting it immensely both times.

Notwithstanding the bullshit game start times and Fox pretty much dictating the schedule so killing off the young family audience that was so prevalent at Parra.  Going back to Parra season after next might not be the golden goose we're expecting.  It could be season 1 ish all over again with the club needing almost reinvention.  That they sent out a questionnaire to non renewing members that pretty much had a leading answer of not going and waiting for Parra is a clear sign the club is completely out of touch with its fan base and the reasons for non-attendance.

Cannot beleive how terrible a game day experience it is now @ ANZ, and Spotless...even our dire 3rd season still had that Parra atmosphere

We've been lacking that cohesion, we can't seem to string passes together and from the first minute the game the nux have been pressing us and they kept that up, we were out of our feet by the 55th minute... we struggled and limped in that 2nd half. Same thing about Adelaide.

As for that formation... I am not sure why Riera was playing so deep as an attacker... its like he played as an AM rather than a striker...

Interesting how when we play the first game in a week everyone is happy that the team is playing with "heart". In the second game in a week people are concerned that the players didn't show the "commitment" that they showed a few days earlier. In the third game in a week (the second away game, this one played in another country) they players suddenly have no "heart", "commitment" or "passion".

    Where we?

I didnt think people were happy with the Adelaide game it was just as pissweak in the second half

we have gave away games in the second half all season (under 2 different managers) the two games in a week didn’t help but it isn’t the reason
