  • Dropped Points In Wellington

    mack

Another second half slump was enough for the Western Sydney Wanderers to drop points against Wellington Phoenix tonight.

In a near carbon copy of the draw against Adelaide earlier this week, the Wanderers were well on top early, and cemented their advantage with the opening goal in the 28th minute. Having won a free kick on the right wing, Raul Llorente fired in a cross to the edge of the penalty area. The ball bounced off a number of players then dropped down in front of Brendon Santalab. The talismanic striker shaped up and fired at goal with a side foot volley that had Lewis Italiano with pace. Not long after Oriol Riera nearly doubled the advantage with a looping header that Italiano tipped over the bar.

Wellington manager Marco Kurz made a brace of changes at half-time, introducing Matija Ljujic and Nathan Burns and the change paid dividends. Roly Bonevacia lost out to Andrew Durante inside the Wanderers half, the ball rolled to Ljujic, with a gaping midfield hole in front of him and none of the Wanderers defenders closing him down the Serbian midfielder took a couples of touches to setup the long range strike of some 25 yards that blew past Janjetovic's right hand.

Brendan Hamill put the Wanderers position under further threat with an idiotic decision to hold a Wellington attacker when he had Michael Thwaite backing him up. Having been booked earlier, the second yellow was followed by a red and Hamill walked off the pitch leaving his side a man down.

Wellington arguably should have won the game in stoppage time, Matthew Ridenton broke the Wanderers offside trap and with two of his team-mates begging for a cutback Ridenton elected to bring the ball back onto his left and fired in a tame strike at goal.

The draw does nothing for the Wanderers position on the tale, as they will finish in 6th place regardless of the result of the Melbourne vs Perth game tonight. The Wanderers  face Melbourne Victory on Friday the 19th of January.

Im struggling for positives here but I’ll have a go

We look better when we play santalab and Reira together

(the negative is gombau wont do it unless pushed)

    carussca had some beautiful touches

    anything else?

    Sotirio didn't play?

I got nothing tbh. We are a team without ideas, without the  mental agility required to adapt to a game that's slipping away and a team without physical stamina to be competitive for 90mins.

I have to be honest and say I can only go by the radio commentary I was listening to as a guide,  my laptop is on the fritz and I couldn't get a stream. The commentators were kiwi and complimentary to WSW and how they played. Said a draw a fair result.I base my opinions on what i heard during the game.

In the WSW tactical playbook under attack it must read: "Must complete at least 15 passes, then back pass through Baccus to a CB"...

...under counterattack "Must stop 10 meters past halfway and then back pass through DM to a CB"

Typical bit of class from Santa, great cameo from Carussca...very meh from Baccus...happy for Roly to start off the bench from now on

That lineup will completely lose the midfield.

True tell roly to go dm play quick up the wings lock the right side play like in 2012 Just counter attacks lock one side of the field

    Pretty much all that.

Baccus repeatedly gave the ball away - what's happened to him??

I hardly heard Lustica's name all night??

    Bridgey ...needs his radar reset.

And how ON EARTH did Roly get the Alex Tobin 3 points - how???

The last two games have been very meh for me. Not just for the draws, but because of the number of games in such a short time period. It's overkill, and it feels like we are just going through the motions grinding results.

We are probably the 6th best team in the comp at the moment. If we come 6th it won't be a surprise, and we will probably be knocked out pretty quickly from the finals. Similar to last season.

We just don’t have that mentality to kill a team off or fight in the trenches. Way too soft mentally and physically. The mob from the posh end of town have a team full of filthy b******s and they fight for every ball. That used to be us hey.

Agree with Baccus Snr......playing nothing like last season when he was one of  our best.

I am puzzled by the apparent lack of fitness and finesse shown this season. We are toast by the middle of the second half in most games. Have been all season ?

I think they don't fear us at all. They would probably look forward to playing us again so they could give us another belting. How depressing :nono:

Baccus keeps losing the ball or slowing a counterattack by going round in circles.

I cannot believe Roly would get the 3 pts. He didn't deserve any. For two weeks in a row we lost the midfield at halftime and lost the points.

Chin up mate, there are worse things in life than losing a game of football. I'm not being flippant or having a go at you when I say that,I actually mean it.

I watched our Mum die over a period of three years from an incurable disease that ate her brain away.No cure.Nothing we could do to save her.

People getting pissed off over a 1-1 draw in a game of football....meh

    • I think the handball red was the right call. He might have gotten away with playing advantage (although that would have been exceptionally controversial and still might have got called back by VAR anyway) if the player on the ball hadn't shined it to the keeper. But it was a foul under the laws and it prevented the attacker's cut back to have a 1 on 1 with the keeper, and since it wasn't the tackle itself that caused the foul he didn't get the protection of the "attempt at making a football challenge" reduction to a yellow.
