  • Duke and Riera Combine To Crush Brisbane

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers overcame an early Brisbane goal to record a comfortable 4-1 win against the Roar tonight.

Pre-game the big point of discussion was the complete absence of Wanderers marquee attacking midfielder Alexander Baumjohann. Manager Markus Babbel spoke prior to the match and put the exclusion down to a lack of effort in training during the week. 7 minutes into the game and it looked like he might have made the wrong call, as Brisbane Roar took the lead with a wonderful strike by Dylan Wenzel-Halls. The solo effort saw him cut inside the Wanderers erstwhile fullback Bruce Kamau, and curl it over the head of Tass Mourdoukoutas and past the full length dive of Vedran Janjetovic.

Mitch Duke made his starting debut and paid back the faith by pulling the score back level in the 15th minute. Duke lined up a shot from a long way out and having been invited to shoot by the lack of pressure, he squeezed the ball under Jamie Young. The keeper would have been unhappy at letting the ball bounce under his arm.

Oriol Riera then continued his second half of the season resurgence by picking up what could be his best goal in the Red & Black. Roly Bonevacia fired a cross from deep on the right wing that had too much curl and began heading behind Riera. Despite the difficulty of the chance, Riera ran onto and hooked a volley from just inside the penalty area that Jamie Young could only get a fingertip that barely deflected the ball's flight into the back of the net.

The marquee striker had his double 6 minutes before half-time after a lengthy intervention by the VAR. Bonevacia crossed into the middle from the other side this time around, it found a flick-on at the near post that was turned home by Riera, only for the linesman to flag Riera for an offside offence. Replays and the VAR eventually determined that it clearly came off the head of ex-Wanderer turned Roar central defender Jacob Pepper and the goal was given. The 3-1 scoreline was a clear reflection of the flow of the match with the Roar well off the pace, chasing shadows in midfield and barely creating any chances after their goal.

The second half was a better one for the Roar but one that ultimately did not see them pick up another goal. Giancarlo Gallifuoco made his debut for the Wanderers as a late sub in the 80th minute, but by the time he and fellow substitutes Mark Bridge and Kwame Yeboah had taken to the rythym of the match the Roar had run out of petrol. It was Yeboah who came closest to scoring in regulation time as he smashed a close range but acute angled shot into the crossbar.

Finally Roly Bonevacia had the goal his game deserved, as Roar fullback Daniel Leck got his wires crossed when facing towards his own goal, losing control to Tarek Elrich, who quickly passed through to Bonevacia, he took one touched that sent him clear into the 18 yard box and he fired his second touch past a stranded Jamie Young.

The 4-1 scoreline was as good as the Wanderers deserved, and with the dropping of Baumjohann, it appears that Babbel's mantra for a new mentality has finally coalesced into meaningful action on the field. His side are unbeaten in 4 games with 3 wins and 1 draw, and while a finals berth is still quite unlikely, their position on the ladder is looking far better than Brisbane's, who drop to 5 points behind the Wanderers and are already looking for next season.

The Wanderers play Wellington Phoenix next Sunday the 17th of March at Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

Babbel said in the presser he was not happy with Treejack’s effort in training

He also commented that there are options now up front with Duke, Yeboah, and Bridgey. That has put on the pressure for Riera to hold on to his spot in the starting 11.

And Tate had muscle problems during the week, MB didn't want to risk Tate getting injured.

GG boys.. The biggest surprise for me was Hamill, he was there when we needed him most and hopes he picks it up for the rest of the season as like Riera (Superb goal).. Smoggy keep doing your thing mate as it seems to be working on him lol

Hamill has a good game in him.......but his inconsistency will always be an issue and won't change at this stage of his career. I still don't think he is captain material either, but credit where it is due, he played a good game tonight.

Reira is really frustrating, that skills for his first goal! We all know he has that but he is just as likely to go missing for the next 3 or 4 games. He also played well tonight, but hasn't done enough this season.

Majok's touch isn't getting any better is it, he gets up and down and works hard, but Christ his first touch is a shocker,

Duke never stops running and puts himself around in a Santa style fashion and I like Yeboah, things happen when he comes on.

    Duke:

"Everyone stepped it up at training since I’ve been there, in that first week I have noticed everyone stepped up another level. You know what, with the form the boys are in, it takes a bit more than your reputation to get you in.They are pushing him [Baumjohann] at another level. Now it’s up to him to prove his worth. [The healthy competition] makes a big difference.”

I'm with you, I really struggle watching Majok, it's the simplefundamentals he's just not getting.

He's our new Appiah, at least Majok can find the back of the net.

He's our new St Dino...just like our season one Cro legend he runs like a road train filled with fat lambs off to the abattoir, with the same maneuverability and stopping distance, and (as shown in tonight's game) can back heel as well (though not into the goal). If he stays on two goals he'll match St Dino's record too.

Of course needs more fist pumps.

Loving the renewed sense of passion and mentality we're seeing from a squad that a scant five weeks ago were playing like a pack of busted arses. Perhaps it has been the cumulative effect of Babbel's words wearing down the players' egos and/or doubts, perhaps its the way he has shown the older players that he won't keep them in the game squad if they can be replaced after errors by one of the Youff stars, and perhaps the advent of Yeboah & Duke has brought some much needed hunger into the changing sheds. Has to be said that two guys that were ready for the drop (Roly & Tarek) have really lifted, and Biscuits is also on the right path again. Snakes has had his moments (he had his obligatory WTF fumble in the second half tonight), but he's also been working his guts out to minimise errors and rally the troops.

It's still a work in progress, and we need to continue to deny better oppo goals whilst maximising our chances. Crossing & set pieces are definitely a work in progress and not sure if the wing-back options taken with Majok and Kamau in the past few weeks are a long term winner. What will help immensely is if AB10 can find whatever it is he's missing right now and bring it back along with his ability to create openings with clever passes so that Oriel, Duke, Roly & Yeboah can score more goals. Oh and Hamill & Tarek need to keep the backs slogging away like they have been.

Higher placed teams will be looking over their shoulder at us now.

Duke combo at the front was was fantastic.

But Hammil was the hero today in that 2nd half. How he got that deflection from Henrique  i don't know but if they score there its a different game. Need more games like that from Hammil

    Link to comment

If you look over the season Hammill is a much better player with Tass and Ziegler than he is with Elrich, whether it is because they both lack pace or something who knows but every shocker he has had he has been partnered with Elrich who let's be honest does struggle in the middle of the park, he looks so much more comfortable out wide.  Not blaming Elrich though he tries hard, he is just not a central defender.

On another note, in four games time we could be in a situation where ESFC are playing for a chance of the Plate and we are playing with an impossible dream of staying alive.  That Derby could effectively be WSW taking any chance of the Plate away from ESFC, pity there will be noone there to support.

i have defended majok but he really does need to be doing better, that said cant complain we did pretty well a lot of good performances, sure it was against the roar who are terrible but we still looked good, riera and roly really in form at the moment and that is something i never expected to say

Babbel presser was quite amusing when asked if Robbie Fowler (linked to roar job) was someone that would have been likely  coach when he was playing... Babbel flat out no he was only caring for scoring goals haha

about troisi - he is too expensive for us

great to hear him talk about players putting pressure on Reira and Baum go get their maximum performance

the game itself last night was the first time in a while I felt we were actually going to win when 3-1 mins Perhaps that mentality is finally setting in

if you told me Reira would score 2 with his feet I would never believe you

I agree with most that have said that Duke and Yeboah have injected some hunger and urgency into the team. We lacked that before but now with them pushing the rest of the players have also picked up.  After the first goal it was easy for the heads to go down and get smashed (like vs Newcastle) instead they pushed harder. That is what the fans want to see, a team giving 100%. Sometimes that is not enough and we may still lose .....it doesn't matter rather that than the way we played in some of the previous games.

Nice to see performances all round improving, surely this has to be put down to Markus Babbel and his whole coaching staff, he keeps putting the word "we" in his pressers, good to see all backroom staff being acknowledged as being part of the team, it obviously enforces the culture and mentality and spirit that every club needs to be successful, a dissenting voice is banished into the shadows and has to earn a chance to be part of the whole again through some effort being shown, examples Baccus senior and this week ABJ.

Keep up the good work coach, things are definitely on the up at the moment, feels great to actually look forward to next match again, come on Wanderers !!!

Overpriced for a dodgy product. Glad to see Unser Chef ruling it out.

As for believing we were going to win at 3-1...

Studs up, late, lunge high boot = no card.

5 minutes later Kamau I think gets into a tangle and gets carded.

How ****ed it is that we finally get a few combinations going and then we end up losing 3 players for a mickey mouse couple of friendlies against a Malaysian Club side and a dodgy put together Malaysian U22 side next week (Tass, Majok and Bacchus) for a tournament the following week in the International window.  Also interesting to note that the U23 National Team has a representative from EVERY SINGLE A League Club except ESFC.

The Angry One still has to stop one player. Hope it's Tass or Baccus as I'd rather see Majok go so Babbel doesn't have to consider him for R22 versus the Nix

    The sacrifices we make eh.

Who are you seeing next round to make sure we win?

It's the first game I've missed for a very long time (if at all), so there could be something in that.

Better check the gig guide for next Sunday....

It’s a nice feeling to wake up this morning and be talking about a comfortable win. Composure on the ball was excellent last night and we were really knocking it round well. I thought everyone had a cracker.

Something that is particularly pleasing is that we are now a team that can actually score lots of goals (regardless of result). We’ve never been a team known for scoring multiples so to finally turn that around is awesome.

I don’t really care much for the finals this season. I’d rather we just keep this form going and set ourselves up for a good crack next year.

Exactly - nice to see we are becoming quite the attacking and free flowing team

    Wonderful to watch
